IO Goes Global With Singapore Data Center: The 2013 Launch

IO’s 2013 Singapore launch brought factory-built modules to its first international data center. The contemporaneous report named Goldman Sachs, EVIA iSolutions and TMI, while current sources do not connect the site to Iron Mountain’s Singapore facility.

IO announced its first international data-center launch in Singapore on October 15, 2013. The rollout centered on factory-built IO.Anywhere modules for Goldman Sachs, with additional capacity for IO’s own operations. The launch illustrates how IO pitched modular infrastructure as a way to deploy capacity across locations—but its resilience claims were a company thesis, not proof that backup power could be dispensed with.

What IO announced in Singapore

In its October 15, 2013 report, Data Center Knowledge described the Phoenix-based company’s Singapore site as both IO’s first international data center and its Asia-Pacific headquarters. The facility was a former Seagate manufacturing site. CEO George Slessman said IO had turned up capacity in the Singapore market in six months; the report said the sea shipment from Long Beach, California, took about six weeks.

Those are figures from the contemporaneous account of one project, not independent industry benchmarks or statements about IO’s present-day operations.

How the modular deployment worked

IO built and customized IO.Anywhere modules at its Phoenix factory, then shipped them to Singapore for installation. The 2013 report gave this deployment breakdown:

The account also said the facility had capacity for up to 122 modules. That was a reported capacity figure at launch; it does not establish the site’s capacity or status today.

Customers and distribution relationships named at launch

Data Center Knowledge identified business-continuity specialist EVIA iSolutions as IO’s second Singapore customer. It also reported an agreement with Tractors Machinery International (TMI), described at the time as IO.Anywhere’s exclusive distributor in Singapore, Malaysia, and Brunei. The report establishes those historical roles, not whether either relationship continues today.

IO’s resilience argument—and its limits

IO’s commercial case was that factory-built modules and software-driven management could make it easier to put IT capacity in multiple locations and distribute workloads between them. Slessman argued that this approach could help smaller organizations pursue the kind of multi-location resilience associated with large cloud companies.

He also said, “With the advent of new technology, the resiliency of the site will become irrelevant to the resiliency of the application.” That was a prediction about application design and workload distribution, not evidence that a data center’s power or other site-level safeguards were unnecessary. Slessman’s further 2013 prediction that most apps could operate without UPS systems and generators within 24 months should likewise be read as a forecast, not as current engineering guidance.

What is known about Singapore data-center service today

Iron Mountain currently markets colocation service in Singapore at a Serangoon facility. Its service page lists 7.3 MW of total power capacity and a 14,200-square-meter facility. Iron Mountain’s 2017 announcement concerned an agreement to acquire two Credit Suisse data centers, including a 153,000-square-foot Singapore site in Serangoon; a subsequent filing says the operations were acquired in March 2018. The company’s 2026 guide says its facility previously served Credit Suisse.

These records establish a present-day Iron Mountain Singapore offering and the history of a Credit Suisse-origin facility. They do not establish that Iron Mountain’s current SIN-1 is the former Seagate site IO described in 2013. The two facility histories should not be treated as interchangeable.
