Microsoft’s Azure cloud region in Malaysia, called Malaysia West, became generally available on May 28, 2025. Microsoft places it in Greater Kuala Lumpur and says it has three availability zones. The company’s separate US$2.2 billion, four-year investment announcement covers more than construction: it also includes workforce training, government collaboration, cybersecurity and developer support.
Where is Microsoft building Azure data centers in Malaysia?
Microsoft identifies the broad location of its Malaysia West cloud region as Greater Kuala Lumpur. The region is the Azure service footprint; “data center” refers to the physical facilities supporting it. Microsoft has not publicly specified exact street addresses or a site-by-site facility count in the announcements cited here. Microsoft’s launch announcement says Malaysia West has three availability zones.
A May 2024 report from Malaysia’s Investment Development Authority, citing The Malaysian Reserve, described a land transaction in Pulai, Johor and a construction contract with Pasukhas. That report does not establish that either item is part of Malaysia West, so it should not be used to identify the Azure region’s location. MIDA’s report is a separate account of reported project activity, not a Microsoft site announcement.
When did Malaysia West open?
Microsoft announced Malaysia West as its first cloud region in the country and said it was generally available on May 28, 2025. The company had previously announced plans for a Malaysian datacenter region in 2021; on May 2, 2024, it announced a broader investment package. In March 2025, Microsoft had described Malaysia West as upcoming and scheduled for the second quarter of that year; its May 28 announcement confirmed general availability. How much is Microsoft investing?
On May 2, 2024, Microsoft announced a US$2.2 billion investment in Malaysia over four years, describing it as its largest investment in the country at that time. The amount is a broad commitment, not a construction-only budget. Microsoft said the package includes:
- Cloud and AI infrastructure.
- Training an additional 200,000 people in AI skills.
- Work with the government on a National AI Centre of Excellence and cybersecurity capabilities.
- Support for Malaysia’s developer community.
The scope and amount come from Microsoft’s May 2, 2024 announcement.

What does Malaysia West offer organizations?
Microsoft says organizations can use Azure and other services through Malaysia West, with in-country data residency, security and lower latency. These are benefits Microsoft describes; data residency is not automatic for every workload or service. Organizations should check the residency commitments and availability that apply to each service and configuration before placing data or workloads in the region. The company’s launch announcement describes the region and its intended benefits.
What are the projected economic and job impacts?
A Microsoft-commissioned IDC study, reported by Microsoft in March 2025, projected US$10.9 billion in new revenue and 37,575 jobs by 2028 across Microsoft, its partners and customers using cloud services. The jobs projection includes 5,700 skilled IT jobs. These are forecasts, not realized totals or an independently verified impact assessment. Microsoft’s summary of the IDC study reports the estimates; the underlying report was not available in the cited sources.

Separately, a Microsoft fact sheet published in April 2024 gave company estimates and projections for datacenters in Malaysia. They were not Malaysia West-only counts, and they are not current headcount figures:
- 28 people employed: Microsoft’s reported employment at its Malaysian datacenters as of the fact sheet’s April 2024 publication.
- More than 809 peak construction jobs and approximately 3.3 million work hours: Microsoft’s estimates for construction of the new datacenters.
- 82 employees and contractors by the end of 2026: Microsoft’s projection across operational facilities, not a confirmed outcome.
These figures appear in Microsoft’s April 2024 Malaysia datacenter fact sheet. They measure different things and should not be added together as a single job total.

What is not established about the facilities?
The cited public announcements establish the region’s broad location and three-zone design, but not exact facility addresses or a count of physical datacenter buildings. They also do not provide independent, facility-level measurements of Malaysia West’s energy use, water use or emissions. The announced investment and projected economic effects therefore should not be read as a complete account of the facilities’ construction cost or environmental performance.
