Cohere introduced Command R+ on April 4, 2024, and announced Azure as the first cloud-provider deployment. That did not make Azure the only way to use it: Cohere said its hosted API was available immediately, too. For a business evaluating the model today, the other important distinction is that Cohere now recommends Command A for most uses and reserves Command R+ for complex retrieval and multi-step tool workflows.
What is Cohere Command R+?
Command R+ is an enterprise-oriented large language model from Cohere. In its April 4, 2024 launch announcement, Cohere positioned it for production workloads involving retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), tool use and multilingual operations. RAG lets a model draw on supplied or retrieved information when answering, and tool use lets it call external functions or services as part of a workflow.
Cohere described Command R+ as designed for complex enterprise use cases; those capability and performance descriptions are the company’s claims, not independent benchmark findings. The launch announcement specified a 128,000-token context window and coverage of ten key languages. Cohere’s current documentation lists a maximum output of 4,000 tokens for the documented model. These are different limits: context is the material available in a request, while output is the maximum generated response. Cohere’s launch announcement and current model documentation provide the respective details.
Was Command R+ available on Azure first?
Yes, in the sense that Azure was the first cloud-provider deployment Cohere announced. Cohere’s wording did not mean Azure was the exclusive launch route: the company said its hosted API was available immediately as well. Microsoft later described Command R+ entering the Azure AI catalog through Models as a Service. The distinction matters if “Azure first” is being read as “Azure only.” Cohere’s launch post and Microsoft’s announcement describe the rollout.

Other access routes followed. AWS Bedrock’s model card gives Command R+ an August 2024 launch date. The available announcements establish Cohere API, Azure AI and AWS Bedrock as routes, but do not establish a complete current list of supported Azure regions, quotas, account prerequisites or deployment terms. Check the provider’s current listing for the exact model version and region before designing around availability. AWS’s model card identifies its Bedrock offering.
What does Command R+ cost?
There is no single timeless rate in the available pricing information. Cohere’s April 2024 launch page listed one set of API rates, while current documentation lists different rates for the specific API model command-r-plus-08-2024. The documented current figures were accessed in 2026; rates may change, so verify the provider’s price for the model and access route you intend to use.

| Pricing reference | Input tokens | Output tokens | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cohere launch announcement, April 2024 | $3 per million | $15 per million | Launch-page API pricing; Cohere |
| Cohere documentation, accessed 2026 | $2.50 per million | $10 per million | For model ID command-r-plus-08-2024; Cohere documentation |
Input and output tokens are billed separately, so an estimate should account for both the information sent to the model and the response it generates. The table compares Cohere’s stated API rates; it does not establish identical charges or terms when deploying through a cloud provider.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does Command R+ differ from Command A?
Cohere’s current model guidance recommends Command A for most use cases, while describing Command R+ as suited to complex RAG and multi-step tool-use workflows. That is a workload distinction, not evidence that one model is universally better. Teams should match the model to their retrieval and tool-calling requirements, then verify the version, limits and pricing in the intended service. Cohere’s model documentation gives its current positioning.

What should a business verify before choosing a route?
- Model and workload: Confirm the exact model version and whether the task needs complex RAG or multi-step tool use.
- Deployment availability: Check the provider’s live listing for region, quotas, account requirements and deployment terms. The cited launch announcements do not establish a complete current Azure availability matrix.
- Cost basis: Compare input and output rates for the precise version and provider route; do not treat the April 2024 launch rates as current universal pricing.
- Performance evidence: Treat launch claims and vendor comparisons as Cohere’s own positioning. The cited materials do not provide independent benchmark results that establish comparative quality.
