Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSecure a smart home by hardening the router, separating cameras and other IoT devices from computers that hold financial information, using unique credentials with multifactor authentication, and keeping devices patched. Then review what cameras and voice assistants can record, who can access them, and how long data is retained. These controls reduce exposure; they cannot guarantee that a device or account will never be compromised.
1. Harden the router before adding more devices
Your router is the gateway between connected devices and the rest of your network, so start with its settings. The Federal Trade Commission’s IoT guidance recommends changing default router credentials and securing the Wi-Fi network. Router menus differ by model, but the relevant controls are usually in the router’s app or its administration page.
- Change the administrator login. Replace the factory username and password if the router permits it. This login controls router settings; it is separate from the password you use to join Wi-Fi.
- Set a new Wi-Fi name and password. Avoid names that reveal your address, household, or router brand. Use a password that is not reused for any other account.
- Choose the strongest available Wi-Fi security. Enable WPA3 Personal if supported. If it is unavailable, use WPA2 Personal rather than an open network or obsolete security mode.
- Install router firmware updates. Turn on automatic updates if offered, or check the manufacturer’s instructions regularly.
- Leave the firewall enabled. Disable remote administration from the internet unless you have a specific need for it and understand how to secure that access.
The FTC identifies the router as a central control point for IoT privacy. Its consumer guidance is available at FTC.gov; because no specific guidance-page URL was supplied here, check the FTC site for its current router and IoT recommendations.
2. Put smart-home devices on a separate network
Use a guest or IoT network, or a VLAN-backed network, to keep cameras, speakers, bulbs, locks, TVs, appliances, hubs, and sensors apart from computers that contain tax records, banking documents, or other sensitive files. The point is to limit what an intruder could reach if one connected device or its account is compromised.

Inventory what is connected
Open the router’s connected-device list and identify each device. Give devices recognizable names where the router allows it, so you can spot unfamiliar entries and know which equipment needs updates. Include hubs and appliances, not just devices with cameras or microphones.
Choose an isolation method
- Guest or IoT Wi-Fi: A practical choice when the router provides a separate network for connected devices. Check the router’s settings to confirm that the network is actually separated from your main devices.
- VLAN: A more configurable option, typically managed through networking equipment that supports VLANs. It can separate device groups without relying on a basic guest-network feature.
The FTC specifically recommends a separate network for cameras, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) advises separating smart-home devices from computers holding sensitive financial documents. If a device needs to communicate locally with a phone, hub, or other equipment, check that the chosen network arrangement still permits the functions you rely on.

3. Replace default credentials and limit account access
Set a different, strong password for each device and cloud account. Never keep factory credentials or reuse a password from email, banking, or another service. NIST’s smart-home guidance, dated April 2, 2025, links many attacks on smart-home devices—including incidents involving people speaking to babies through connected video monitors—to reused passwords.
- Enable two-factor or multifactor authentication (MFA) on device and cloud accounts wherever it is offered.
- For accounts with administrative control, prefer phishing-resistant MFA when the platform supports it.
- Give each household member only the access needed for their role, and remove accounts that are no longer used.
- Disable remote access or administration that you do not need.
MFA adds a second verification step, so a stolen password alone is less likely to be enough to enter an account. It does not make password reuse safe or remove the need to protect account recovery options.

4. Keep software supported and patched
Turn on automatic firmware updates for the router and smart-home devices when available, and enable automatic app updates on the phones or tablets used to manage them. Subscribe to security notices from manufacturers so you can learn when an update or support change requires action.
Check whether each device still receives security updates. NIST advises replacing or retiring older devices that can no longer receive updates; a device that continues to function may still be an avoidable weak point if its manufacturer no longer patches it. Before retiring one, remove it from the associated account and network where the manufacturer’s instructions allow.

5. Reduce camera and microphone exposure
For cameras, video doorbells, baby monitors, and voice assistants, decide which features you actually need and review them in both the device app and account settings. FTC and NIST guidance supports treating privacy settings as part of device security, not as an afterthought.
- Remote viewing: Decide whether you need to view feeds away from home. If not, disable remote viewing or remote access where the device offers that control.
- Encryption and secure connections: Use encryption and HTTPS settings where offered. Do not assume that every product exposes the same controls.
- People and permissions: Restrict who can administer a camera or microphone-enabled device, and remove access for people who no longer need it.
- Recording retention: Review how long recordings are kept and delete or shorten retention where the service allows.
- Manufacturer data sharing: Check the account’s privacy and data-sharing controls, including settings for voice recordings or video data.
- Physical placement: Avoid placing cameras in bedrooms or other private spaces unless the privacy tradeoff is deliberate.
- Access history: Review sign-in or device-access logs when available and investigate activity you do not recognize.
6. Compare router options by security, support, and fit
A high advertised Wi-Fi speed is not evidence of stronger security. Compare the controls and support you will actually use: WPA3, firewall, secure boot, automatic patching, network isolation, account MFA, vendor support life, privacy practices, coverage, device capacity, management usability, and any recurring subscription cost. A mesh system may help with coverage in a larger home; a single router may be sufficient for a smaller one. Neither replaces unique passwords, updates, or network separation.
