To send Apple Cash on an iPhone, open an iMessage conversation, tap the Apps or plus button, choose Apple Cash, enter an amount, review the payment source, then double-click the side button and authenticate. Apple Cash is available in the United States, and you should send payments only to people you know and trust.

Before you send: check eligibility and setup

Apple says Apple Cash requires a compatible device running current software, two-factor authentication for your Apple Account, and the same Apple Account signed in on the device. You also need enough Apple Cash or an eligible debit card in Wallet to fund the payment. Apple Cash is available in the United States. A standard Apple Cash account requires the user to be at least 18 and a U.S. resident; a family organizer can set up Apple Cash Family for an under-18 family member, though some features that require a supported payment card may not be available to minors. See Apple’s setup and eligibility guidance.

Send money in Messages on iPhone

  1. Open the conversation. In Messages, start or open an iMessage conversation with the person you intend to pay.
  2. Open Apple Cash. Tap the Apps or plus button by the message field, then tap Apple Cash. Enter the amount. If a message contains an underlined monetary amount, Apple says you can tap it to open Apple Cash with that amount filled in.
  3. Choose Send. Tap Send. Add an optional comment if you want, then review the payment details.
  4. Check how it will be paid. Apple Cash balance is selected by default. You can choose an eligible debit card instead. If your Apple Cash balance is too low to cover the payment, Apple’s instructions say the debit card can cover the remainder.
  5. Authorize the payment. Double-click the side button and confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode. Apple documents these steps in its guide to sending and receiving Apple Cash.

To ask the other person for money instead, use Request rather than Send when that option appears.

Limits and payment fees

Apple’s published standard person-to-person limit is $1 minimum and $10,000 maximum per message, with a $10,000 rolling seven-day maximum. Apple Cash Family and Tap to Cash have lower limits: $2,000 per message and $2,000 over a rolling seven-day period. See Apple’s Apple Cash limits.

Do not confuse a payment to another person with moving your Apple Cash balance out to a bank or debit card. Apple’s February 2026 limits page says a bank transfer is free and generally takes one to three business days. An Instant Transfer to an eligible debit card typically arrives immediately and costs 1.7%, with a $0.25 minimum and $25 maximum. Those fees apply to transferring a balance out, not to sending a person-to-person payment in Messages.

If the recipient has not accepted the payment

If the recipient has manual acceptance enabled, they need to open your Messages conversation and tap Accept. Apple says they have seven days to accept. While a payment is pending because the recipient has not accepted it, you can cancel it from Apple Cash transaction history. Apple’s Apple Cash support guide describes acceptance and cancellation.

Protect yourself when sending

Apple cautions: “Apple Cash person-to-person payments are like any other private transaction between two people, so only send and receive money with people you know.” A payment for something you have not received may be difficult to recover. Do not send money under pressure, to an unknown contact, or to someone claiming to represent a business, government agency, Apple, or tech support. Apple’s payment-safety guidance explains these risks.
