The reported work was to supply three Cray XC30 supercomputers and two Cray Sonexion storage systems to the Defense Department’s High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP).
What did the reported contracts cover?
HPCwire reported that Cray received two contracts totaling more than $40 million to provide HPCMP with three XC30 supercomputers and two Sonexion storage systems. The report carried a Cray announcement; the available account does not provide contract numbers, an exact award date, an award instrument, a delivery schedule, or a final contract value. Those details should therefore be treated as unverified, rather than inferred from the reported combined figure. HPCwire’s report
| Reported element | What the report says |
|---|---|
| Contracts | Two contracts |
| Combined value | More than $40 million, as reported by HPCwire; final value not stated |
| Supercomputing equipment | Three Cray XC30 systems |
| Storage equipment | Two Cray Sonexion systems |
| Customer | Department of Defense High Performance Computing Modernization Program |
Why was the equipment being acquired?
The report describes HPCMP as supporting Defense Department science, technology, test, evaluation, and acquisition-engineering communities. It quotes program director John West saying: “Supercomputing is a critical enabler for the wide variety of science, technology, test, evaluation, and acquisition engineering communities that the DOD HPC Modernization Program supports.”
The available account does not identify where the systems would be installed or which specific workloads they would run. It also does not report performance, storage capacity, or a comparison with competing equipment.

How should the $40 million figure be interpreted?
The headline figure is a reported combined value for two government contracts, not the stated price of one machine or an itemized consumer purchase. HPCwire’s account says “more than $40 million”; it does not disclose a precise total or how the value was allocated among the systems, storage, and any other contract elements. No contract records or terms are established by the available report.
What remains unconfirmed?
- The exact award date and contract identification numbers.
- The contract type or other award terms.
- When and where the systems were to be delivered or deployed.
- The final contract value and any later changes to the award.
- How the systems performed after delivery or which projects used them.
Accordingly, the supported conclusion is limited to what the trade-publication account attributes to Cray: two contracts, a combined value above $40 million, and the specified XC30 and Sonexion equipment for DoD’s HPCMP.
