Chinese fabless chip startup Vastai Technologies raised RMB 500 million—reported at approximately $77 million—in a 2021 Series A+ round. The financing was led by Matrix Partners China and China Internet Investment Fund, with existing investors also participating. Vastai said it would put the money toward products, intellectual property, hiring, software and the ecosystem needed to make its data-center inference chips usable.
Who funded Vastai’s 2021 Series A+?
EE Times reported that Matrix Partners China and China Internet Investment Fund led the round, while several existing investors also took part. The RMB 500 million was reported as approximately $77 million; that dollar amount is a rounded conversion, not a separate dollar-denominated raise. After this financing, EE Times put Vastai’s cumulative funding at about $133 million.
What was the money intended to pay for?
CEO John Qian said Vastai planned to invest in its products, IP and people, while developing software and an ecosystem around its chips. For a fabless chip company, this points to work beyond chip design: software and ecosystem development can help customers integrate hardware into data-center systems and applications. The report did not assign specific amounts to those areas.
What chips and hardware was Vastai developing?
SV100 inference chip
In a July 2021 product announcement, Vastai introduced the SV100 as a general-purpose inference chip. The company claimed more than 200 TOPS of peak INT8 processing on a single chip. That is a manufacturer-published peak figure, not an independent benchmark or a direct measure of performance on every workload.

VA1 accelerator card
Vastai’s product information describes the VA1 as a half-height, half-length PCIe card rated at 70 watts. It targets low-latency data-center inference and is listed for computer vision, video processing, natural-language processing, search and recommendation. Vastai also lists support for decoding up to 120 channels of 1080p video. That channel figure is a published product claim; the available information does not specify a test configuration or independently verify it.
Is the SV100 a GPU?
Vastai described the SV100 as a general-purpose inference chip and the VA1 as an accelerator card. Those terms identify a focus on running trained AI models, or inference; they do not establish that the SV100 is a GPU. A general-purpose GPU is designed to handle a broad range of parallel computing tasks, while an inference accelerator is aimed at executing model predictions efficiently. The available information does not provide architectural details sufficient to classify SV100 more specifically or establish its compatibility with particular GPU software.

How did Vastai’s funding develop later in 2021?
In December 2021, Vastai announced RMB 1.6 billion in B-1 and B-2 financing. The company said the funds would support SV100 commercialization and further GPU research. This was a separate later announcement from the Series A+ round; the announcement does not provide a split between the two financing stages.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can’t be concluded from the funding and product claims?
The funding reports and Vastai’s product descriptions establish what the company raised, what it said it planned to fund, and what specifications it published. They do not establish independent performance against competing accelerators, current pricing, production status, or present-day availability and support in any particular market. A buyer comparing data-center accelerators would need evidence on inference throughput per watt, latency, video-decoding density, software and API compatibility, server fit and power requirements, and local availability and support.
