The World Economic Forum’s 55th Annual Meeting brought leaders to Davos-Klosters, Switzerland, from 20 to 24 January 2025, under the theme “Collaboration for the Intelligent Age.” Its highlights ranged from AI investment and economic resilience to conflict, diplomacy, climate, jobs and gender parity. These were discussions, proposals, announcements and forecasts—not a record of policies adopted or predictions proven.

What was the theme of the 2025 Davos meeting?

The official theme was “Collaboration for the Intelligent Age.” The five-day meeting was organized around five themes: Reimagining Growth; Rebuilding Trust; Safeguarding the Planet; Industries in the Intelligent Age; and Investing in People. The Forum’s post-event summary described close to 3,000 participants from more than 130 countries, including over 350 heads of state and government and ministers.

Before the event, the Forum had said it expected close to 3,000 leaders from over 130 countries, including 350 governmental leaders and 60 heads of state or government, and planned to livestream over 220 sessions. Those were pre-event figures, not an audited attendance count. The meeting was a prominent convening for debate and announcements; its scale does not make every statement a consensus or an adopted policy.

What did leaders discuss at the World Economic Forum in 2025?

Theme Discussion or example What the record establishes
Reimagining Growth Productivity and GDP alongside innovation, equality, sustainability and resilience. The Forum’s account of meeting discussions; not agreement on one growth model.
Rebuilding Trust Geopolitical uncertainty, conflict, diplomacy and efforts toward peace. The Forum’s retrospective describes a shift in attention; it does not establish that conflicts ended or peace efforts succeeded.
Safeguarding the Planet Land degradation and the DRC’s announcement of a forest corridor reserve. A reported statement and announcement; later legal designation or implementation is not established here.
Industries in the Intelligent Age AI applications, investment and development, alongside forecasts about future AI systems. The Forum’s characterization of discussion and an attributed prediction, not a verified technological outcome.
Investing in People Reskilling, jobs gaps, technology’s effects on work and gender parity. Topics reported in meeting coverage; no single policy outcome is established.

Conflict and diplomacy competed for attention

The Forum’s retrospective said the meeting coincided with a nascent Middle East ceasefire and the US presidential inauguration. Although conflict was seen as a leading immediate risk in the run-up, the Forum described discussion turning increasingly toward diplomacy and difficult efforts to secure peace as the week progressed. That describes the tenor of the meeting, not a resolution of the conflicts.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made one of the meeting’s clearest security appeals. He said European countries should spend as much as necessary on defence, adding: “If it takes 5% of GDP to cover defence, then so be it. 5% it is.” The 5% figure was his proposed level if required, not an adopted European spending commitment.

Trump’s address offered policy proposals, not evidence of enactment

During the meeting, newly inaugurated US President Donald Trump addressed four global CEOs by video and outlined priorities for his second term. The Forum’s 23 January account described proposals on taxes and energy, including a proposed cut to the corporate tax rate and pressure for lower oil prices. They were policy signals made in an address; the account does not establish that they were enacted or show their effects.

AI discussion shifted toward deployment and investment

The Forum said the AI conversation placed more emphasis on applications, investment and development than the previous year’s discussion. That framing points to a practical question for industries and workers: how to put AI to use, rather than discussing the technology only in abstract terms.

Not every forecast was about near-term deployment. Meta chief AI scientist Yann LeCun predicted that a different AI architecture paradigm would emerge within five years. Referring to the current large language model paradigm, he said: “Within five years, nobody in their right mind would use it anymore, at least not as the central component of any AI system.” This was LeCun’s forecast, as reported by the Forum, not an established outcome.

Growth was framed as more than GDP

In its growth retrospective, the Forum described participants weighing the pace of economic growth against its quality and wider effects. Productivity and GDP mattered, but discussions also linked growth to innovation, equality, sustainability and resilience. That leaves open how policymakers should balance those aims; the meeting did not settle on a single formula.

World Economic Forum managing director Saadia Zahidi put the tension this way: “The question is not whether the world still needs economic growth – it does – but what is the best way to achieve growth while advancing progress on other essential policy objectives?”

Debt, land degradation and nature featured in the numbers

The Forum’s numbers roundup said $100 trillion in global public debt was a figure anchoring meeting discussions. This was the Forum’s presentation of a discussion figure, not a new debt estimate independently produced at Davos.

The same article reported Ibrahim Thiaw, executive secretary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, saying about 40% of the planet’s land was degraded, affecting about 3.2 billion people. Those figures were attributed to Thiaw’s statement; they were not described as newly measured at the meeting.

For nature, the Forum reported that DRC President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo announced the Kivu to Kinshasa Green Corridor Reserve. The reported area was over 540,000 square kilometres of forest across the Congo River Basin. The announcement is not, by itself, evidence of the reserve’s subsequent legal status or implementation.

Work, skills and representation were part of the people agenda

The Forum’s future-of-work coverage said sessions addressed reskilling, jobs gaps and technology’s effects on work. Its broader meeting retrospective also noted continued attention to gender parity, even amid divergent sentiment around equity, and described gender as a strong theme in the cultural programme.

One country-specific example came from DRC Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner. As quoted in the Forum’s numbers roundup, she said women’s representation rose from 16% to 33% in the government formed in 2024. This is her account of the DRC government’s composition, not a global representation figure.

How to read the Davos highlights

The Forum is a primary source for its meeting’s theme, programme, announcements and its coverage of what participants said. Its event recap is not independent verification of every factual claim or a record of what happened after the meeting. The distinctions matter: Zelenskyy made an appeal, LeCun offered a forecast, Trump outlined proposals, and the DRC president announced a reserve. Those are not interchangeable with enacted commitments or proven results.
