Google announced a US$2 billion investment in Malaysia on May 30, 2024, to build its first Malaysian data center and Google Cloud region at Elmina Business Park in Greater Kuala Lumpur, Selangor. Google said construction was underway at an October 1, 2024 groundbreaking. The official sources cited here do not confirm that either facility is operational as of September 30, 2026.

What Google announced

The US$2 billion is Google’s announced investment commitment for the Malaysian data center and Google Cloud region—not a verified accounting of money already spent. Google named Sime Darby Property’s Elmina Business Park in Greater Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, as the site. The Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) reported the commitment as RM9.4 billion at the time of its May 30, 2024 report. Google’s announcement and MIDA’s report describe the project.

What the data center and cloud region are for

The two components are related but serve different purposes. Google described the data center as infrastructure for services including Search, Maps and Workspace, as well as for delivering AI capabilities. The Google Cloud region is intended to provide cloud services closer to Malaysian organizations.

Component Stated purpose and intended users
Data center Support Google services such as Search, Maps and Workspace, and delivery of AI capabilities.
Google Cloud region Bring Google Cloud services closer to enterprises, startups and public-sector organizations in Malaysia. Google described the intended benefits as high performance and low latency, with customer controls related to security, data residency, compliance and storage requirements.

Google said the planned region would complement its Dedicated Cloud Interconnect locations in Cyberjaya and Kuala Lumpur. These are announced purposes and capabilities; the cited statements are not independent performance tests or confirmation that the region is available to customers. Google’s May 2024 announcement and MIDA’s account outline the planned functions.

Project timeline and status

  1. November 2023: Google later said it and the Malaysian government established a strategic collaboration.
  2. May 30, 2024: Google announced the US$2 billion investment and identified Elmina Business Park as the site.
  3. October 1, 2024: Google held a groundbreaking and said construction was underway.

The October 2024 statement is the latest confirmed construction milestone in the official sources cited here. Those sources do not establish a completion date, opening date or current operating status. A groundbreaking and a statement that construction is underway should not be read as evidence that the facilities have since opened. See Google’s October 1, 2024 update.

Economic impact and jobs are forecasts, not results

Google said the project could generate more than US$3.2 billion in positive economic impact and support 26,500 jobs by 2030. The figures were estimates associated with an impact analysis commissioned by Google and attributed to AlphaBeta; they are not measured economic gains or a verified count of jobs already created. MIDA reported RM15.04 billion as the local-currency equivalent of the projected US$3.2 billion impact. Google’s groundbreaking announcement and Google Malaysia’s account of the impact estimate describe the projections.

Google linked the investment to Malaysia’s Cloud First Policy and to demand for cloud services and AI. MIDA connected it to national industrial and digital-economy objectives, including the New Industrial Master Plan 2030. These are stated policy aims and expected benefits, not proof that the investment has already produced those outcomes.

Education initiatives announced alongside the investment

Google’s May 2024 announcement also described AI-literacy programs. The figures below were reported as of that announcement and should not be mistaken for current completion totals.

  • Gemini Academy: Google said the program had benefited more than 600 Malaysian educators since a November 2023 pilot. Malaysia’s Ministry of Education aimed to expand it to 15,000 educators by the end of 2024; the cited account states a target, not a verified final count.
  • Experience AI: Developed with Google DeepMind, the Raspberry Pi Foundation and Penang Science Cluster, the initiative was intended to help educators teach students aged 11 to 14. Its initial target was 1,000 educators reaching 10,000 students.

These program descriptions and targets come from Google Malaysia’s May 30, 2024 announcement.
