Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced a planned investment of more than $4.4 billion (about INR 36,300 crore) in its Asia Pacific (Hyderabad) Region through 2030. The commitment covers the cloud region’s data-center construction, facility and utility operations, and purchases of goods and services from businesses in the surrounding economy. It is not a one-time contract for a single building, nor Amazon’s total investment in India.
What the $4.4 billion commitment covers
AWS announced the Hyderabad investment on November 22, 2022. The spending plan runs through 2030 and is associated with the full Hyderabad cloud region. AWS describes the amount as including:
- Capital expenditure for data-center construction and related infrastructure.
- Operating expenses for utilities and facilities.
- Purchases of goods and services from regional businesses.
Because an AWS Region is a geographic cloud-infrastructure area rather than one standalone building, the commitment should be understood as a regional infrastructure and operating program. The announcement does not say that all of the money had already been spent in 2022.
What is the AWS Hyderabad Region?
The Asia Pacific (Hyderabad) Region contains three Availability Zones. Availability Zones are separate infrastructure locations within a Region, designed to let customers distribute workloads for resilience while keeping them in the same broad geographic area.

Hyderabad joined AWS’s Mumbai Region, which opened in June 2016. Having two AWS Regions in India gives customers more choices about where data is stored, can reduce latency for users near each location, and provides additional options for business continuity and disaster recovery. The investment figure is tied specifically to Hyderabad, even though its benefits can be used by customers operating across India.
Projected economic effects
Employment estimate
AWS estimated that the investment would support more than 48,000 full-time jobs annually at external businesses during the investment period. This is an AWS projection, averaged annually, and includes jobs supported through the broader construction, operations and supplier activity—not a promise that AWS would directly hire 48,000 employees.

GDP estimate
AWS also estimated that construction and operation of the Hyderabad Region would contribute approximately $7.6 billion (about INR 63,600 crore) to India’s GDP by 2030. That is a company projection for the period ending in 2030, not an independently measured result reported after the investment.
How the Hyderabad plan compares with later announcements
Later announcements use different geographies, dates and corporate scopes. Comparing the headline amounts without those qualifications can make them appear additive when they may overlap.
Rank #3
| Announcement | Amount | Scope and horizon | What it represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| AWS, November 2022 | More than $4.4 billion (approximately INR 36,300 crore) | Hyderabad AWS Region, through 2030 | Planned regional investment covering construction, facilities, utilities and regional goods and services |
| AWS, 2023 | $12.7 billion | AWS cloud infrastructure across India, by 2030 | Planned India-wide AWS investment; AWS said this would bring its total India investment to $16.4 billion by 2030 |
| Amazon, 2026 | Additional $13 billion | AI and cloud infrastructure in India; expansion stated for Mumbai and Hyderabad | Amazon-wide announcement building on a company-wide $35 billion plan announced in 2025 |
The $4.4 billion Hyderabad figure therefore is not Amazon’s total India investment. The 2023 $12.7 billion figure has an AWS-wide, India-wide scope, while the 2026 $13 billion figure is an Amazon announcement for AI and cloud infrastructure. They were announced at different times and cover different programs. They should not be added together unless the companies provide a scope reconciliation that rules out overlap.
Why the investment matters to cloud customers
- Data-location choice: Customers can select an Indian Region for workloads whose data-residency, governance or latency requirements favor local infrastructure.
- Lower latency: Applications serving users in southern and central India may be closer to Hyderabad than to Mumbai, although actual performance depends on network paths and application design.
- Resilience options: Customers can use multiple Availability Zones within Hyderabad and, where their architecture supports it, separate deployments in Mumbai for additional regional redundancy.
- Capacity for digital services: New infrastructure increases the cloud capacity available to businesses, public-sector organizations and developers, but the announcement does not guarantee capacity or pricing for any particular service.
What AWS said about its India expansion
In an AWS announcement dated May 18, 2023, Puneet Chandok, president of commercial business, AWS India and South Asia, said: “Since 2016, AWS has invested billions of dollars into cloud infrastructure in India to support the tremendous growth we have witnessed in the use of cloud for digital transformation.”
Rank #4
The statement provides context for the Hyderabad plan: AWS presents it as part of an expansion that began with the Mumbai Region, rather than as an isolated project.
How to interpret the headline responsibly
- Check the entity: The $4.4 billion announcement was made by AWS, Amazon’s cloud business.
- Check the geography: It concerns the Asia Pacific (Hyderabad) Region, not every Amazon operation in India.
- Check the date and horizon: It was announced in 2022 and planned through 2030.
- Check the spending definition: The amount includes construction-related capital expenditure, ongoing facility and utility costs, and regional procurement.
- Separate plans from results: The jobs and GDP figures are AWS estimates, and the investment itself is a plan rather than a report of money already spent.
Bottom line for readers
AWS’s $4.4 billion commitment is a long-term, Hyderabad-focused cloud-infrastructure investment planned through 2030. It supports a three-Availability-Zone AWS Region alongside Mumbai and is intended to expand Indian cloud capacity and resilience. AWS projects more than 48,000 external full-time jobs annually during the investment period and about $7.6 billion in GDP contribution by 2030, but those figures remain company estimates. Broader AWS and Amazon investment announcements in 2023 and 2026 have different scopes and should not be treated as a simple cumulative total.
