AI is changing commercial vehicle operations mainly by helping people predict vehicle faults, optimize routes and loads, monitor safety, and see shipments and assets in one operational picture. Most of these systems assist human drivers, dispatchers, mechanics, and managers; they do not make an ordinary truck driverless. Results depend on data quality, system integration, clear ownership of alerts, and measurement in the fleet’s own conditions.
Where AI is making the biggest operational changes
The OECD identifies three leading fleet applications: predictive maintenance and asset management, route optimization and scheduling, and safety monitoring or driver assistance. In practice, these functions increasingly share data from vehicle sensors, GPS, cameras, maintenance records, warehouse systems, and shipment platforms.
| Operational area | What AI analyzes | What teams receive | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maintenance and uptime | Vehicle-health, fault, and performance data | Early warnings and maintenance priorities | Maintenance planners, technicians, and support staff |
| Routing and scheduling | Routes, stops, constraints, demand, and network conditions | Suggested routes, schedules, and exceptions | Dispatchers, planners, and drivers |
| Load planning | Shipment dimensions, available capacity, and delivery requirements | Load and trailer-utilization recommendations | Logistics planners and warehouse teams |
| Safety monitoring | Video and detected driving events | Events for review, coaching, and incident investigation | Safety managers, supervisors, and drivers |
| Visibility | GPS, telematics, warehouse, and shipment-status data | Location, condition, and exception views | Operations teams, customers, and service staff |
Predictive maintenance can move fleets from reaction to prevention
Traditional maintenance often follows a calendar or mileage interval, with additional work after a breakdown. Predictive systems instead examine truck-health or performance data for patterns associated with likely faults. The objective is not to eliminate inspections or technicians; it is to give them earlier, more specific information so a repair can be scheduled before an unplanned roadside failure.
What the workflow looks like
- Data collection: Sensors, electronic control units, fault codes, and operating data are transmitted through a connected-vehicle service.
- Analysis: A model looks for combinations of readings or changes that indicate a developing issue.
- Alert and triage: The system sends a warning to a support or maintenance team, which checks severity, location, parts, and available repair capacity.
- Human decision: Staff decide whether to inspect immediately, schedule a repair, change an assignment, or continue operating with monitoring.
Mack Trucks describes GuardDog Connect as an AI-powered predictive platform that analyzes truck health and performance data and can alert support staff to a potential issue before a dashboard warning appears. Mack reported approximately 150,000 successful AutoSend software updates in 2025 and estimated that those updates helped customers avoid 115,000 days of downtime. Those are Mack-reported results, not an industry-wide benchmark, and they should not be assumed for every truck make, model, or fleet.

AI-assisted routing, schedules, and loads make planning more dynamic
Static route rules can struggle when demand, delivery windows, traffic, driver hours, vehicle restrictions, or depot capacity change during the day. AI-assisted optimization can evaluate more variables, revise plans as conditions change, and surface exceptions for a dispatcher rather than requiring a planner to recalculate every option manually.
Route and schedule optimization
Systems can rank route or schedule choices against constraints such as time windows, vehicle capacity, service priorities, and network commitments. The recommendation remains a planning aid: dispatchers and drivers must verify road restrictions, weather, customer requirements, and any information the model cannot see.
Load and trailer planning
Penske Logistics says it has piloted a photo-based tool that identifies unused trailer space. A tool of this type can help planners find capacity that a spreadsheet or manual review misses, but its usefulness depends on accurate images, dimensions, shipment data, and integration with warehouse and transportation systems.
Forecasting and anomaly detection
Penske also describes using AI for demand forecasting and anomaly detection. Forecasts can help align labor, equipment, and capacity with expected volume; anomaly alerts can draw attention to a shipment, route, or operating result that needs investigation. These are descriptions of Penske deployments and pilots, not a promise that every operator will obtain the same outcome.

Video telematics turns camera footage into safety workflows
AI video telematics combines vehicle cameras with analytics that detect events such as distraction, harsh maneuvers, following-distance concerns, or other defined behaviors. Instead of asking a manager to watch hours of footage, the system flags clips for review, coaching, or incident documentation.
What it can improve
- Targeted coaching: Supervisors can discuss a specific event with the driver rather than relying only on aggregate scores.
- Incident review: Recorded context can help reconstruct what happened and identify whether additional action is needed.
- Risk prioritization: Teams can focus limited safety resources on recurring or severe patterns.
Verizon Connect’s 2026 Fleet Technology Trends Report says 46% of surveyed fleet professionals use video telematics, up 10 percentage points from 2023. Among users of AI-powered video telematics, 74% reported improved driver safety and 41% said the technology significantly improves driver coaching. The same report says 80% of fleet professionals rely on GPS fleet tracking.
These figures come from a Verizon Connect-sponsored survey announcement. They describe what respondents reported, not an independent causal study proving that the technology alone produced each improvement. A responsible program also needs written policies, worker communication, appropriate data retention, access controls, and human review before disciplinary or insurance decisions.
Connected vehicle and shipment data improve operational visibility
GPS and telematics can show where vehicles are and how they are operating. When those feeds connect with maintenance, warehouse, and shipment systems, dispatchers can see exceptions earlier and coordinate with drivers, technicians, customers, and carriers.

Penske describes its Supply Chain Insight platform as providing a “single pane of glass” across warehouses, in-transit shipments, and dedicated fleets. That is Penske’s characterization of its own platform. The practical benefit of a unified view is fewer handoffs between separate screens and faster escalation when a vehicle is delayed, a shipment status changes, or a vehicle-health issue appears.

AI fleet management is not the same as autonomous trucking
Predictive maintenance, dispatch optimization, video coaching, and shipment visibility generally support a human-driven fleet. Automated driving is a separate application that uses AI, sensors, control systems, and safety engineering to perform parts of the driving task. A fleet can deploy analytics or connected services without removing the driver.
The U.S. Department of Transportation describes safe integration of AI into automated driving systems as one transportation application among several. Its guidance, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Innovative Technology Deployment program, and the UK Department for Transport’s transport AI action plan establish policy and deployment goals; they do not certify the performance of a named commercial product.

How to implement AI without losing operational control
- Choose one measurable problem. Start with a defined issue such as roadside breakdowns, missed delivery windows, preventable safety events, or poor trailer utilization.
- Set a baseline. Record current downtime, repair lead time, route miles, on-time performance, incident frequency, coaching workload, or another metric before deployment.
- Audit data and integrations. Check sensor coverage, GPS connectivity, camera quality, vehicle compatibility, maintenance coding, shipment records, and the interfaces needed to move alerts into existing systems.
- Pilot with human review. Let dispatchers, technicians, safety managers, and drivers verify whether alerts are accurate and actionable before automating decisions.
- Assign ownership and escalation. Every alert needs a responsible role, a response time, and a rule for when a vehicle is inspected, reassigned, stopped, or released.
- Set privacy and security rules. Define who can view video and location data, how long records are retained, how workers are informed, and how accounts, devices, and integrations are protected.
- Compare results with the baseline. Separate changes associated with the pilot from seasonal demand, fleet mix, staffing, weather, and other operational factors.
- Scale only after the workflow works. Expanding a system with inaccurate data or unclear accountability multiplies false alerts and implementation cost.
How poor data and weak workflows limit AI
Data quality
Predictions are only as representative as the data behind them. Missing sensor readings, inconsistent maintenance codes, stale shipment statuses, poor camera views, or weak network coverage can produce unreliable recommendations. Penske describes a framework for monitoring data quality; that discipline is necessary regardless of vendor.

Human oversight
An alert is not a diagnosis or an instruction. Staff need context, the authority to act, and a way to report false positives. DOT’s emphasis on safe integration and Penske’s description of human oversight point to the same operational requirement.
Workforce trust and privacy
Driver-facing video and behavior analytics can feel punitive if policies are unclear or footage is used outside its stated purpose. Explain what is recorded, who reviews it, how coaching works, when footage is disclosed, and how long it is retained.
Cybersecurity and reliability
Connected vehicles and logistics platforms add accounts, devices, APIs, and network dependencies. Evaluate authentication, access logging, software-update practices, outage procedures, data ownership, and what happens when connectivity is unavailable.
How to compare commercial fleet AI products
Compare products within the same operational category. A dash camera, a video-telematics service, a predictive-maintenance platform, a route optimizer, and an automated-driving system are not substitutes.

What a standalone truck camera can—and cannot—do
A commercial truck dash camera is a physical accessory that can record video. By itself, it does not provide the connected AI analytics, GPS tracking, fleet management, coaching workflows, predictive vehicle-health service, or shipment visibility described above. Those functions generally require additional hardware, connectivity, software, subscriptions, and administrative processes.
For a small operator considering a purchase, first decide whether the goal is basic recording, connected video telematics, driver coaching, insurance documentation, or broader fleet management. The appropriate product category and total cost differ substantially.
What this means for fleet budgeting and operations
AI should be treated as an operating-system change, not simply a hardware purchase. A realistic budget includes devices, installation, connectivity, software, integration, training, support, data storage, and the staff time needed to review and act on alerts. The financial case should use the fleet’s own baseline—such as avoided downtime, fewer empty miles, improved asset utilization, or reduced investigation time—rather than importing a vendor’s percentage from a different population.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe strongest early deployments usually make a human team faster or better informed. They do not remove accountability. Fleet leaders should preserve manual fallbacks for connectivity outages, inspect high-risk alerts, and expand only when measured results justify the continuing cost.
