Google’s first data center in Japan is in Inzai City, Chiba Prefecture. The company announced in October 2022 that it planned to open the site in 2023; Google’s current data-center directory now lists Inzai as an active location, not a site in development.

Where is Google’s Japan data center, and when did it open?

The facility is in Inzai City, in Japan’s Chiba Prefecture. Google announced the planned 2023 opening on October 6, 2022. The company’s current location directory lists “Inzai, Japan” with its development status set to false, indicating that the location is operating. Google’s directory does not give a specific opening day.

In the 2022 announcement, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai wrote: “We’ll be opening our first data center in Japan — in Inzai City, Chiba — in 2023.” Google’s announcement set out the plan; the current data-center directory establishes the site’s listed status today.

How much did Google invest, and what did the investment cover?

The Inzai facility was part of a $730 million infrastructure investment announced by Google in 2022, which began the prior year and was scheduled to continue through 2024. The package included the Topaz subsea cable, which Google expected to enter service in 2023, as well as the company’s existing Cloud regions in Tokyo and Osaka. The $730 million figure applies to that broader infrastructure program, not to construction of the Inzai data center alone.

Google Cloud later announced a separate, broader commitment: $1 billion for digital connectivity to Japan in 2024. Its Pacific Connect expansion includes the Proa and Taihei subsea cables, an interlink cable, and partnerships with KDDI, ARTERIA Networks, Citadel Pacific, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. This connectivity announcement is not a disclosed facility construction budget for Inzai. Google Cloud’s 2024 announcement describes the cables and partnerships.

What does Inzai mean for Google’s Asia strategy?

A data center in Japan adds local infrastructure to a network that already included Google Cloud regions in Tokyo and Osaka. In the 2022 announcement, Google said the site was intended to make its tools and services faster and more reliable for users in Japan, support economic activity and jobs, and strengthen the country’s connection to the global digital economy. Those were the company’s objectives; the announcement does not independently measure the results.

The cable investments extend the story beyond one facility. Topaz was part of the 2022 infrastructure package, while the later Pacific Connect expansion describes new trans-Pacific routes connecting Japan with Hawaii, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the continental United States. Google says the routes are intended to improve connectivity and resilience across the region. The Pacific Connect announcement provides Google’s account of that wider network strategy.

What details has Google disclosed about the facility?

Google’s location directory says the Inzai site collaborates with local clean-energy resources to add power back into the grid. It does not publish a facility-specific capacity, staffing count, power demand, or economic-impact measurement. The published information therefore confirms the location’s active status and describes an energy-related collaboration, but it does not establish the site’s scale or quantify its local effects.
