Possibly, according to a May 21, 2024 Bloomberg report citing unnamed sources—but the companies have not publicly confirmed the capability, and its technical details remain undisclosed. The report concerns specialized advanced chipmaking equipment, especially ASML extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography systems. It does not establish that every machine or factory could be switched off, or that a shutdown would happen automatically if China invaded Taiwan.
What did the report claim?
Bloomberg reported that ASML and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) had ways to disable advanced chipmaking machines in an invasion scenario. Bloomberg attributed the claim to people familiar with the matter and said US officials had privately raised concerns with Dutch and Taiwanese counterparts. Bloomberg’s report is evidence that officials and industry actors were discussing the contingency, not a public technical disclosure or on-the-record confirmation.
A contemporaneous South China Morning Post account said ASML had reassured Dutch officials of its ability to disable machines remotely and that the Netherlands had run invasion simulations. Those details were also attributed to unnamed sources. The SCMP reported that ASML, TSMC, and the Dutch trade ministry declined to comment when asked; US agencies did not respond. Those were responses reported at the time, not statements of the companies’ current positions.
Which chip machines are involved?
The central equipment is ASML’s extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography systems, used to manufacture advanced semiconductors. The Associated Press described ASML in March 2024 as the world’s only producer of EUV machines for advanced semiconductors. These are highly specialized industrial tools—not ordinary computers, finished chips, or every piece of equipment in a semiconductor factory.

- 5 x 5 inches, 0.67 ounces, 0.03 inches thick. Some wafers are marked with alignment marks.
- The pattern is produced by light diffraction, and its reflective appearance changes with the viewing angle.
- Silicon wafers are fragile—please handle with care.
- Circuit details can be examined under a microscope.
The reporting does not identify the exact systems covered, how a disabling mechanism would work, what would trigger it, or whether it depends on a live connection. It also does not establish that every EUV machine, every ASML tool, or all Taiwanese fabrication plants are covered. The public accounts do not say whether the capability has been tested.
Is the alleged “kill switch” confirmed?
No. The available accounts rely on unnamed sources, and no named ASML, TSMC, Dutch government, or US official publicly confirmed the system in the contemporaneous reporting. Calling it a “kill switch” without clearly attributing that label can imply a degree of technical certainty that the public evidence does not provide.

It is also important to distinguish having a way to send a shutdown command from being able to carry it out reliably during a conflict. A December 2024 analysis by the National Institute for Public Policy argues that denying an invader access to the equipment’s value could contribute to deterrence, while noting that disrupted communications could complicate remote action. This is policy analysis, not a company technical document or independent verification that the reported mechanism works.

EUV systems are a strategically important part of advanced chip production, which helps explain why a contingency involving ASML and TSMC drew attention from governments. But disabling a lithography tool would not, by itself, establish what happens to an entire factory or determine the outcome of a conflict. Public reporting does not show that the reported capability would stop China from producing semiconductors generally.

The issue sits alongside export controls and commercial ties. The AP reported that China accounted for 29% of ASML revenue in 2023, making it the company’s second-largest market that year. AP also reported that Chinese companies bought equipment ahead of Dutch licensing requirements introduced in 2023 for machinery used to make advanced processor chips. That 29% figure is a historical, year-specific revenue share—not a current market statistic.
In March 2024, AP also reported Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s broader statement, according to CCTV: “The Chinese people also have the right to legitimate development, and no force can stop the pace of China’s scientific and technological development and progress.” It was not a comment on the alleged machine-disable capability.
