StorReduce made software-defined storage for large-scale unstructured data; Pure later said the technology formed the basis of its ObjectEngine data-protection platform.
Why did Pure Storage buy StorReduce?
Pure said the acquisition would strengthen its object-storage portfolio with cloud-optimized deduplication and expand integrations for managing data across public clouds. The company also connected StorReduce’s technology to data tiering, migration and protection.
Deduplication identifies redundant data so it can be stored more efficiently. Pure described StorReduce as a way to reduce storage and bandwidth costs, but its announcement did not publish an independently verified StorReduce-specific savings figure or deduplication benchmark. The acquisition release is available from Pure Storage’s August 21, 2018 announcement.
What did StorReduce do?
StorReduce was a privately held Sunnyvale software company. Pure characterized its product as cloud-first, software-defined storage for large-scale unstructured data. Its technology was intended to help organizations manage, move and protect data in hybrid-cloud environments.

In a November 2018 cloud-services announcement, Pure described StorReduce as cloud-native deduplication for backups to Amazon S3. The company presented this alongside CloudSnap in a “flash-to-flash-to-cloud” approach: flash storage for fast recovery and Amazon S3 object storage for offsite retention. Those descriptions explain the intended architecture; they do not establish measured customer results.
How much did the acquisition cost?
Pure’s 2021 Form 10-K reported $20.5 million in cash consideration, net of cash acquired, for the acquisition. It separately said it repaid $6.1 million of assumed debt and paid $1.1 million in transaction fees on StorReduce’s behalf. The filing also reported employee equity awards and purchase-accounting allocations, which should not be conflated with the net cash figure.

In February 2019, Pure launched ObjectEngine, a data-protection platform for backup and recovery across cloud and on-premises environments. Pure said ObjectEngine was built on cloud-native technology from StorReduce. The launch was a product integration step, not proof that StorReduce continued as a separately marketed product. Pure’s 2018 cloud-services announcement described the earlier AWS S3 backup use case and CloudSnap architecture; it is historical product information, not confirmation of present availability. The cited current-status materials do not establish whether StorReduce or ObjectEngine is separately sold or supported today. Organizations evaluating either name should confirm product identity, availability and support directly with Everpure, the company now associated with the Pure Storage brand.

What the deal does—and does not—show
- Established: Pure announced and completed the acquisition in August 2018, and its later product announcement connected StorReduce technology to ObjectEngine.
- Not established by the cited announcements and filing: a StorReduce-specific storage-reduction ratio, independently verified cost savings, customer adoption figures, or current standalone product and support status.
