CrowdStrike agreed to buy SecureCircle in an all-cash deal announced November 1, 2021, then completed the acquisition later that month. The strategic goal was to extend CrowdStrike’s endpoint and identity security approach to data, using encryption and user-based controls. CrowdStrike did not disclose the deal price in its announcement.
What is SecureCircle?
SecureCircle was a SaaS-based cybersecurity service focused on protecting data on, from, and to endpoints. CrowdStrike characterized it as a way to extend Zero Trust security beyond devices and identities to the data users access and use. CrowdStrike’s November 1, 2021 announcement described planned encryption for data in transit, at rest, and in use.
The proposed approach also linked data-access and usage policies to user context. CrowdStrike said it would combine SecureCircle’s technology with Zero Trust Assessment so policies could reflect a user’s Zero Trust score. These were descriptions of the planned product direction, not independent validation of its effectiveness.
Why did CrowdStrike buy SecureCircle?
The acquisition was intended to extend CrowdStrike’s endpoint and identity security model to data. Instead of treating endpoint protection and data protection as wholly separate problems, the announced vision connected the device, the user’s identity, and the data being handled. That could support controls informed by both user and device context, alongside encryption across different data states.

CrowdStrike estimated the 2021 market for data loss prevention and related technologies at approximately $3 billion. That was CrowdStrike’s estimate, based on two IDC studies—Worldwide Data Loss Technologies Forecast, 2021–2025 and Worldwide Endpoint Encryption and Key Management Infrastructure Software Forecast, 2019–2023—not a figure directly attributed to IDC. CrowdStrike said it had not independently verified the studies and made no representation about their adequacy, fairness, accuracy, or completeness.
When did CrowdStrike acquire SecureCircle?
The agreement, acquisition date, and public completion announcement fall on separate dates:

| Milestone | Date | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Agreement announced | November 1, 2021 | CrowdStrike said it had agreed to acquire SecureCircle in an all-cash transaction, subject to customary closing conditions. |
| Acquisition date in SEC filing | November 29, 2021 | CrowdStrike’s annual report records the acquisition of 100% of Secure Circle, LLC on this date. |
| Completion announced publicly | November 30, 2021 | CrowdStrike announced that it had completed the acquisition. |
The November 1 announcement said the deal was expected to close in CrowdStrike’s fiscal fourth quarter. The public release described the transaction as all cash but did not state a purchase price. CrowdStrike’s SEC-filed annual report gives preliminary purchase-accounting allocations of $3.8 million to developed technology, $0.9 million to net tangible assets, and $14.2 million to goodwill. Those accounting allocations are not a separately disclosed deal price.
What did the acquisition add to Falcon?
CrowdStrike’s stated plan was to deliver data security through its Falcon platform, with encryption and policies tied to user context. The company’s original announcement framed this as protection for data as it is stored, transmitted, and used. It did not supply independent efficacy measurements or verified customer outcomes attributable to SecureCircle, so the announced capabilities should not be read as proven performance results.

CrowdStrike’s later product announcements show that its data-protection portfolio continued to develop, but they do not establish which SecureCircle components remain in current offerings:
- On December 14, 2023, CrowdStrike announced general availability of Falcon Data Protection. The company described endpoint-focused protection, visibility into data flows, and response to exfiltration or accidental leakage using the existing Falcon agent. Read the general-availability announcement.
- On April 29, 2025, CrowdStrike announced additional features spanning endpoints, cloud environments, GenAI, and SaaS, including detection of encryption in files within encrypted archives and GenAI data leak prevention. Feature availability should be confirmed with CrowdStrike before treating any particular capability as currently purchasable. Read the feature-expansion announcement.
How does the strategy compare with traditional DLP?
There is no universal winner between endpoint-centered data protection and other DLP approaches. The differences that matter depend on where sensitive data moves, how policies are enforced, and what an organization already runs. CrowdStrike’s acquisition materials explain its intended design; they do not provide a neutral comparative test.

| Evaluation area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Coverage | Does protection cover endpoints alone, or also cloud, SaaS, and GenAI workflows? |
| Enforcement point | Are controls applied at the endpoint and user/data layer, or through network and application layers? |
| Deployment and administration | Would a consolidated agent or platform replace separate tools, and what configuration work would still be required? Any ease-of-use claim should be verified for the organization’s environment. |
| Data states and movement | Can the system protect stored, transmitted, and actively used data, and show where sensitive files move? |
| Policy context | Are policies static, or can they take account of identity, device, and risk context? |
