ITPro editor Ross Kelly condemned the advice as “the most ludicrous piece of advice I’ve ever seen in my life.” That is Kelly’s opinion; the underlying report describes a specific post, not guidance issued to all Microsoft employees.
What did Matt Turnbull reportedly recommend?
ITPro’s Ross Kelly reported on July 7, 2025, that Turnbull, identified as an executive producer at Xbox Game Studios Publishing, had posted advice for people affected by layoffs. The suggestions reportedly covered career planning, resume help, and networking and outreach, as well as using AI to reduce some of the “emotional and cognitive load” of losing a job. The Economic Times also reported on the post and said it was later deleted.
Kelly quoted Turnbull’s caveat: “No AI tool is a replacement for your voice or lived experience. But in times when mental energy is scarce, these tools can help you get unstuck faster, calmer, and with more clarity.” The complete original LinkedIn post and its full list of prompts have not been independently confirmed in the cited coverage, so the reports do not establish every detail of what Turnbull wrote.
Was the advice about counseling or job-search help?
It reportedly involved both. Career planning, resume drafting, and networking prompts are practical job-search uses. Suggestions to ease the emotional and cognitive burden of job loss move into a different area: emotional support. Calling the post advice to use AI “for counseling” captures the concern behind Kelly’s headline, but the reported material does not show that Turnbull explicitly told people to replace therapy with a chatbot or that he presented AI as a therapist.
#1 Best Overall
That distinction matters for someone navigating a layoff. A tool that helps organize accomplishments or draft a networking note can assist with a task; it does not provide the judgment, care, or accountability of a qualified mental-health professional.
Why did Kelly call it “ludicrous”?
Kelly’s July 7, 2025, ITPro article is an opinionated reaction to the advice, particularly its timing and what he viewed as a lack of empathy toward workers who had just lost their jobs. His phrase “the most ludicrous piece of advice I’ve ever seen in my life” is his editorial judgment, not an independently verifiable fact.

The Economic Times reported that Microsoft had handed pink slips to 9,000 employees in the surrounding 2025 layoff context. That figure is the outlet’s report, not a current headcount or an independently verified figure established here. The coverage concerns Turnbull’s reported post; it does not establish that all laid-off Microsoft workers were told to use AI.

The American Psychological Association’s health advisory says general-purpose generative AI chatbots and wellness apps should not replace a qualified mental-health provider. It allows that they may be a supportive adjunct—not a substitute—within an ongoing therapeutic relationship. This guidance concerns general-purpose tools, not every digital mental-health service.

In a discussion published March 20, 2026, the World Health Organization identified as a growing concern the use of generative AI tools that were not designed or tested for mental-health support. WHO said responsible use requires clinical and research expertise, governance, and evidence. These are current professional and policy perspectives; they were not part of the 2025 exchange.

How to separate useful layoff support from mental-health care
- For job-search organization: AI may help generate a resume outline, sort experience into themes, or draft a networking message for the user to review and personalize. These are task-based uses, not guarantees of an accurate or effective application.
- For emotional distress: A general-purpose chatbot should not be treated as a counselor or replacement for qualified care. Someone who needs mental-health support should seek an appropriate professional or trusted human support.
- For a fuller transition plan: Career coaching or outplacement support can address practical job-search strategy; those services are distinct from mental-health treatment.
