A French manicure pairs a sheer pink, nude or clear nail base with a contrasting tip, traditionally white. The clean, natural-looking design now includes colored, blended, reverse and decorative versions. Despite its name, the modern style is commonly credited to American nail artist Jeff Pink and his work with Hollywood productions in the 1970s—not to a confirmed invention in France.
What makes a manicure “French”?
The defining feature is the contrast between the nail bed and its tip: a translucent or nude base leaves the nail looking natural, while a distinct accent marks the free edge. In the classic version, that accent is white. The shape and length of the nail can vary; the tip contrast is what makes the design recognizable.
Where did the French manicure come from?
ORLY’s official account credits its founder, Jeff Pink, with developing a versatile look in 1976 for Hollywood actresses who needed a manicure that worked with frequent wardrobe changes. The company says the design later appeared on Paris runways in 1978, inspiring the name “French Manicure.” Read ORLY’s account of its history.
The precise origin is debated, and the name alone does not establish that the design originated in France. ORLY’s history of the style credits Pink with popularizing its modern form in the 1970s while acknowledging the uncertainty. A 2026 ORLY press release describes the style as created in 1976 for Hollywood productions and says the company’s Original French Manicure Kit is under curatorial review by the Smithsonian National Museum of American History; that review is not evidence of a final museum acquisition or finding. French manicures can be compared by tip color, whether the edge is sharp or blended, where the accent sits, and how much decoration is added.

How to do a classic French manicure at home
For the classic look, you need a sheer pink or nude base, white polish for the tips, and a fine brush or French manicure kit for control. - Prepare the nails. Shape them, clean the nail surface and apply a base coat if your polish system calls for one.
- Apply the base color. Use a thin coat of sheer pink, nude or clear polish, then let it dry enough that tip work will not drag it.
- Paint the tips. Use a precision brush to draw a narrow line across each free edge. Keep the width proportionate to the nail; a fine accent often suits short nails better than a broad band.
- Refine and finish. Correct uneven edges with a small brush if needed, let the polish dry, and apply a top coat to seal the design.
A French manicure kit is one convenient route; separate base and tip polishes plus a precision brush work as well. Check current stock, sellers and regional availability before buying, since these details can change.
