CenturyLink announced on June 14, 2013, that it had acquired AppFog, a Portland-based platform-as-a-service (PaaS) provider, for an undisclosed price. The deal was intended to add developer-focused application deployment tools to the company’s Savvis Cloud portfolio and connect them with Savvis infrastructure and CenturyLink’s network. The announcement describes the plan at the time; it does not establish that AppFog remains available today.
What CenturyLink acquired
AppFog provided PaaS: a cloud layer designed to help software developers deploy and run applications without managing all of the underlying infrastructure themselves. CenturyLink described AppFog as supporting multiple programming languages and interoperability between public and private cloud environments. It was cloud software, not a physical product.
In its June 14, 2013 announcement, CenturyLink said AppFog had more than 100,000 developers and more than 150,000 deployed applications. Those are figures reported by CenturyLink at the time, not independently verified measurements.
Why Savvis wanted AppFog
The strategic aim was to pair AppFog’s PaaS with Savvis’s infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) cloud services and CenturyLink’s global network. PaaS addresses the application deployment layer; IaaS supplies underlying computing infrastructure. CenturyLink’s stated rationale was that combining those capabilities could help developers operate and connect applications through its cloud and network services.

Jeff Von Deylen, then president of CenturyLink’s Savvis organization, said the combination would enable developers to “securely and reliably operate and connect the applications they build and deploy.” AppFog CEO Lucas Carlson, who became a Savvis vice president and cloud evangelist, said the company expected enhancements to its PaaS and intended to make the full AppFog suite available to CenturyLink and Savvis clients. Those were statements of intent in the acquisition announcement, not confirmation that every enhancement or distribution plan was completed.
How CenturyLink planned to offer AppFog
| Route | What CenturyLink said |
|---|---|
| Public cloud | AppFog’s public-cloud reach would extend through the savvisdirect online channel. |
| Private or dedicated deployment | Private, dedicated deployments were planned for Savvis enterprise clients. |
The announcement sets out intended routes to market. It does not, by itself, prove that every planned route launched or that the same options remained available later.
