AMD bought Finnish AI company Silo AI to add AI engineering talent, software, and enterprise implementation experience to its hardware business. The strategic aim was to make it easier for companies to develop and deploy AI models on AMD systems—not a publicly quantified boost to AMD’s revenue, customer adoption, or market share.

Why did AMD buy Silo AI?

AMD announced the acquisition on July 10, 2024, describing it as a way to expand enterprise AI solutions and accelerate development and deployment of AI models on AMD hardware. The company characterized Silo AI as Europe’s largest private AI lab. AMD’s announcement

The strategic fit was complementary: AMD supplied processors and accelerators, while Silo AI brought people and software experience in building and integrating AI systems. AMD’s 2024 Form 10-K says Silo AI had developed a software stack used to train multiple state-of-the-art large language models on AMD Instinct accelerators. In its annual report, AMD discussed the acquisition alongside its ROCm software development and broader work to improve AI training, inference, and the developer experience on AMD platforms. That is the practical rationale: AI hardware is more useful to enterprise customers when developers can train and run models on it and get help integrating those models into real systems. AMD presented a better customer experience and faster deployment as expected benefits, not as already measured results attributable to the deal alone.

What does Silo AI do?

Silo AI develops AI models, platforms, and solutions for enterprise customers. AMD said the acquired scientists and engineers had experience working with large organizations, naming Allianz, Philips, Rolls-Royce, and Unilever as examples. Those names illustrate Silo AI’s stated enterprise work; they are not endorsements of AMD or evidence that those companies adopted AMD hardware because of the acquisition. AMD also highlighted Poro and Viking, open-source multilingual large language models developed on AMD platforms. The models and the software stack matter to the deal because they show experience applying AI software to AMD hardware, rather than simply adding a team that worked on AI in the abstract.

How much did AMD pay for Silo AI?

AMD announced an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $665 million. Its 2024 Form 10-K later reported $665 million in cash paid for the transaction. The filing also gives a different accounting measure: $553 million in purchase consideration after closing adjustments, transaction costs, and deferred cash compensation. These figures describe different measures of the transaction and should not be treated as competing estimates of one identical amount. AMD’s July 2024 announcement and AMD’s 2024 Form 10-K, filed February 5, 2025

AMD allocated $577 million to goodwill, which it attributed to the acquired workforce. The filing says Silo AI’s results were not material and were included primarily in AMD’s Data Center segment. Goodwill is an accounting allocation, not a separate payment to employees or a measure of the acquisition’s future return.

When did the acquisition close?

AMD announced completion on August 12, 2024. Its Form 10-K records August 9, 2024, as the transaction’s actual closing date. The dates differ because one is the filing’s close date and the other is the publication date of AMD’s announcement. Completion announcement and Form 10-K

AMD placed Silo AI in its Artificial Intelligence Group under senior vice president Vamsi Boppana. In the completion announcement, Boppana called AI AMD’s “number one strategic priority” and said the company was investing in talent and software capabilities to support customer deployments and roadmaps.

What the acquisition does—and does not—show about AMD’s enterprise AI position

The deal added identifiable capabilities: AI researchers and engineers, a software stack used to train models on AMD Instinct accelerators, model-development experience, and enterprise implementation know-how. Those additions support AMD’s effort to make its hardware easier to use for AI workloads.

They do not establish that the acquisition by itself won customers, increased market share, improved revenue, or made AMD’s AI systems perform better than a competitor’s. AMD’s public statements describe the intended customer benefits, while the Form 10-K says Silo AI’s financial results were not material in the reporting period. The cited disclosures do not quantify the acquisition’s independent effect on adoption or financial performance.
