The right first IT credential depends on the work you want to try: user support, networking, cybersecurity, cloud, or Linux and broad IT foundations. This guide compares nine options with issuer-described entry-level or foundational positioning, and separates course certificates from proctored certification exams. Treat them as ways to structure learning—not as guarantees of a job, interview, or higher pay.
Compare nine starting options
Fees below are the amounts shown on issuer pages in the 2026 check reflected in this guide. They are not necessarily comparable: some are exam-only prices, some depend on exam region, and one includes a course package. A price not stated here means it was not established in the available issuer information, not that the credential is free.
| Credential | Pathway and issuer | Assessment and scope | Entry requirements described by issuer | Price information |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google IT Support Certificate | General IT support; Google | Online foundational certificate covering troubleshooting and customer care, networking, operating systems, system administration, and security. | No prior experience or prerequisites. | Not stated here; the Google page links to Coursera. |
| Cisco Certified Support Technician (CCST) IT Support | Help desk and end-user support; Cisco | Proctored exam: support workflows, documentation, troubleshooting, end-user assistance, computer components, and identifying security threats. Listed duration: 50 minutes. | No formal prerequisites; Cisco advises understanding the exam topics. | US$125 for the exam, as listed by Cisco in the 2026 check. |
| Cisco Certified Support Technician (CCST) Networking | Network support; Cisco | Proctored exam: foundational network devices, media, and protocols. | Cisco Certified Support Technician (CCST) Cybersecurity | Cybersecurity foundations; Cisco | Proctored exam: security principles, network and endpoint security, vulnerability assessment and risk management, and incident handling. Listed duration: 50 minutes. | No formal prerequisites; Cisco advises understanding the exam topics. | US$125 for the exam, as listed by Cisco in the 2026 check. |
| Microsoft Security, Compliance, and Identity Fundamentals (SC-900) | Security, compliance, and identity concepts; Microsoft | Beginner-level proctored exam covering foundational concepts across Microsoft cloud-based and related services. | Beginner level; no formal prerequisite is stated in the cited study-guide information. | US$99, subject to the proctored exam region, as listed by Microsoft in the 2026 check. |
| AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner | AWS cloud literacy; Amazon Web Services | Foundational certification demonstrating knowledge of AWS cloud services and cloud computing. | AWS says no prior experience is needed for its foundational certifications. | Not stated here; check the current exam guide and regional price with AWS. |

Choose a first credential by the work you want to explore
For hands-on user support
Compare the Google IT Support Certificate with Cisco CCST IT Support. Google lays out a broad course-based curriculum, while Cisco’s CCST is a proctored exam centered on support tasks. Cisco maps its credential to entry-level help desk, end-user support, and computer support specialist roles; those are pathway examples from the issuer, not hiring promises.
Google also describes a dual-credential route: learners who complete its certificate and pass CompTIA A+ exams earn both credentials. The Google certificate and the CompTIA exams are separate components. Because current A+ exam codes, fees, and objectives are not established here, confirm those details with CompTIA before buying an exam voucher or study materials.

#1 Best Overall
For networking
Cisco CCST Networking is the directly verified foundational choice in this group. Cisco presents it as a first step toward CCNA, not as equivalent to CCNA-level preparation. The issuer’s Network Technician pathway names entry-level network support technician, help desk technician, and IT support specialist roles.
For cybersecurity
Cisco CCST Cybersecurity tests entry-level concepts, including network and endpoint security and incident handling. Microsoft SC-900 instead focuses on security, compliance, and identity concepts in Microsoft’s service ecosystem. Either can help organize introductory study, but neither issuer description establishes that the credential alone qualifies someone for a cybersecurity analyst position.

For cloud
Choose by the platform and kind of work you want to understand. AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner is AWS-specific foundational cloud knowledge. AZ-900 covers Azure services as well as cloud concepts and governance; Microsoft recommends an IT-area background, so “beginner level” should not be read as “no useful background.” Google Cloud Digital Leader is a broad literacy credential with no technical prerequisites, rather than an associate-level deployment credential.
For Linux and broad IT foundations
LFCA spans general IT topics with Linux-oriented learning, including command-line basics, networking, and security practices. Its listed price combines the exam with an LFS200 course package, so compare it with other choices only after deciding whether you want that course as well as the assessment.

How to decide whether the cost is worth it
Keep the budget focused on one role-related credential and the preparation it actually requires. Exam fees are only part of the cost: a course, practice environment, retake, or updated study material may add expense, and the amounts above do not establish what every learner will spend. Before paying, compare the credential against entry-level job ads in the geography where you plan to work.
- Look for repeated credential names and skills in local postings for the specific roles you would apply to.
- Check whether the credential matches the employer ecosystem: for example, an AWS-focused cloud credential is most directly relevant to AWS concepts.
- Budget separately for training and the exam. Do not assume an online course certificate includes a vendor exam voucher.
- Consider what practical evidence you can build alongside study, such as documented troubleshooting exercises or a small lab. A credential does not substitute for demonstrating what you can do.
- Avoid financing a stack of credentials before checking whether local job listings ask for them; these issuer pages do not provide comparable hiring or salary outcomes.
Verify the exam before buying preparation materials
Certification programs, prices, exam objectives, languages, and renewal rules can change. Check the issuer’s active exam page and study guide immediately before paying or scheduling. For Microsoft exams in particular, the available study guides identify the skills measured as of July 20, 2026 for AZ-900 and July 28, 2026 for SC-900. Microsoft announced an English SC-900 study-guide update for October 21, 2026; if you prepare or test on or after that date, use the active guide rather than relying on an older outline.

- Choose one target role and note the recurring skills and certifications in job postings where you intend to work.
- Open the credential issuer’s current exam page. Confirm the exam code, objectives, format, duration, language, current fee for your region, prerequisites, and renewal or expiration conditions.
- Match a course or study guide to the active objectives. For a course-completion certificate, verify whether a separate proctored exam is needed for any additional credential.
- Set a spending limit for preparation and exam costs, then build practical exercises around the same skills the credential measures.
- After studying, reassess whether the exam still fits your target roles and budget before booking it.
