Yes—Meta announced a way for customers to buy from some small businesses inside an Instagram Direct conversation. In the July 18, 2022 announcement, a buyer could discuss a product and custom details, receive a payment request, pay with Meta Pay, and track the order in that same chat. That announcement does not prove the feature is available for every account, seller, or country today.
What Instagram Direct shopping was designed to do
Meta’s July 18, 2022 Newsroom announcement described a conversation-led purchase flow for customers chatting with a qualified small business. The buyer could ask about an item, agree details such as customization, and place the order without leaving the conversation. Meta used a backpack with optional initials as its example.
The seller’s side of the flow included confirming the item and purchase details, creating a payment request with a description and price, collecting payment, and answering questions after the sale. Meta said customers could use Meta Pay for the announced in-chat purchase.
Meta’s key description was: “In that same chat thread, you’ll also be able to track your order and ask the business any follow-up questions.” This is a description of the 2022 launch, not a guarantee of a current order screen or tracking feature for every Instagram user.

How to buy through an Instagram DM
- Start with the seller’s conversation. Message the qualified small business about the product you want.
- Confirm the details. Discuss size, color, personalization, quantity, shipping information, price, and any other terms the seller needs to fulfill the order.
- Review the seller’s payment request. Meta’s announcement said the business could create a request showing the item description and price.
- Pay through the presented method. The announced Direct flow named Meta Pay. Follow the payment screen actually shown in your conversation rather than assuming that every seller uses the same method.
- Keep the conversation. The announcement placed order tracking and follow-up questions in the same thread, so do not delete or overlook the seller’s messages about fulfillment.
If the seller never provides a recognizable purchase request, confirmation, or payment details, pause and ask the business to verify the order information through its normal support channel. The launch announcement does not establish a universal process for resolving an incomplete or disputed transaction.
How to track an order arranged in Direct
Open the Instagram conversation where the purchase was arranged. Look for the seller’s order confirmation, fulfillment messages, and any tracking information or order-status control associated with that thread. Meta said buyers could track the order there and ask the business follow-up questions.
If the thread does not show a status, ask the seller for the current fulfillment or carrier information. A seller’s latest message and the order confirmation are the most relevant evidence for an individual order; Meta’s 2022 announcement cannot reveal the status of a particular purchase.
Instagram Direct purchase versus Instagram Shop checkout
A product discovered through Instagram Shop is not automatically the same as a purchase created in a DM. A shop, post, or story product tag is primarily a discovery route. Shopify’s Instagram Shopping guidance says shoppers can be sent to the seller’s website and that Instagram Shopping redirects customers to Shopify checkout. The exact checkout options depend on the seller’s setup and market.
| Question | Purchase arranged in Instagram Direct (Meta’s 2022 announcement) | Product discovered in Instagram Shop |
|---|---|---|
| Where you start | You message a qualified small business. | You open a product tagged in a shop, post, or story. |
| How details are handled | You discuss the product and possible customization in the chat. | You review a product listing before proceeding toward the merchant’s checkout. |
| Payment route described by the sources | Meta named Meta Pay for the announced in-chat purchase. | Shopify says Instagram Shopping redirects customers to Shopify checkout; the setup can vary. |
| Where follow-up occurs | Meta said tracking and questions could remain in the same chat thread. | Order confirmation, payment, and fulfillment may be handled through the seller’s website and support system. |
| Availability | Not universally verified by the available sources. | Checkout depends on market, platform, and seller configuration. |
Shopify’s checkout-method documentation also says direct Facebook or Instagram checkout depends on store location, eligibility, and merchant payment setup. That is seller-side guidance, so it explains why two shoppers can see different checkout screens; it is not a promise of a particular buyer flow.
How to tell where you paid
Signs the purchase was arranged in Direct
- The conversation contains the negotiated product details or customization.
- The seller sent a payment request or confirmation in the thread.
- You were directed to a Meta Pay step within the announced chat-based flow.
- The seller is using the same conversation for fulfillment questions or status updates.
Signs you checked out on the seller’s website
- You left Instagram for a merchant checkout page after selecting a product tag.
- The confirmation email or receipt comes from the merchant’s store platform.
- The order number, shipping terms, and tracking link are provided by the seller’s website.
Use the receipt and confirmation source you actually received. Instagram may not be able to retrieve tracking data for an order completed on an external store.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish
Established by Meta’s July 18, 2022 announcement
- A qualified small business could conduct a purchase conversation in Instagram Direct.
- Customers could discuss product details and customization before ordering.
- The business could send a payment request with an item description and price.
- Meta Pay was named as the payment method for the announced flow.
- Meta said tracking and follow-up questions could happen in the same chat.
Not established for every current buyer
- That every account, business, country, or product is eligible.
- That a current Instagram app will display the same order controls described in 2022.
- That every Direct transaction has the same buyer-protection, refund, or dispute terms.
- That Instagram can provide status for an order paid on a merchant’s external website.
Meta’s announcement also cited a figure of one billion people messaging a business each week across Meta’s family of apps in 2022. That statistic covers all of those apps and business messages, not Instagram shopping messages alone and not a current usage estimate.
If your order or tracking information is missing
- Identify the route. Check whether you paid in the Direct conversation or on the seller’s website.
- Reopen the original evidence. Review the chat, payment request, receipt, confirmation email, and any order number.
- Contact the seller. Ask for the order status, fulfillment date, carrier, and tracking link using the seller’s chat or order-support channel.
- Use the merchant’s support process for website orders. If checkout occurred on the seller’s site, its order system is the appropriate place to request a correction or status update.
- Check applicable terms before disputing a payment. The 2022 announcement used general purchase-confidence language, but the available sources do not define current Direct-specific protection, refund, or dispute eligibility.
Bottom line for buyers
Instagram Direct shopping, as Meta described it on July 18, 2022, was a chat-based purchase: discuss the item, receive a seller-created payment request, pay with the offered Meta Pay flow, and use the same thread for tracking and questions. Instagram Shop tags are a different route that may send you to the seller’s website for checkout. Always follow the receipt, order number, and support channel associated with the route you actually used, and treat current availability as account- and market-dependent.
