Did Apple Cut iPhone 16 Orders? What the 2024 Analyst Reports Actually Show

Barclays and Ming-Chi Kuo reported different possible iPhone 16 order cuts in 2024. Here is what each estimate measured, why the figures cannot be added and what Apple’s results did—and did not—prove.

Probably, according to analyst estimates—but Apple never confirmed the specific cuts. Barclays analysts, as reported on October 1, 2024, said Apple may have reduced orders by about 3 million units at a key semiconductor supplier for the December quarter. Ming-Chi Kuo, reported on October 23, estimated roughly 10 million fewer iPhone 16 orders across the fourth quarter of 2024 through the first half of 2025, mainly affecting non-Pro models. Those figures cover different periods and measures, so they cannot be added together or treated as an Apple-reported total.

What was actually reported?

The story is an analyst-reported supply-chain assessment, not an Apple announcement or an audited shipment figure. Public coverage relied on channel checks, delivery-time observations and estimates of component or production plans.

Source and date Reported figure What it measures Important qualification
Barclays, reported by 9to5Mac on October 1, 2024 About 3 million units A possible reduction at a key semiconductor supplier for orders through the December quarter An attributed analyst claim based on supply-channel checks; Apple did not confirm it
Ming-Chi Kuo, reported by 9to5Mac on October 23, 2024 Around 10 million units Estimated order cuts across 4Q24–1H25, mostly for non-Pro models A longer time window and broader estimate than Barclays’; not an Apple filing or confirmed sell-through total
Ming-Chi Kuo, same report 84 million units, down from around 88 million Estimated iPhone 16 production for the second half of 2024 Kuo’s revised estimate, not Apple’s disclosed production

Because the Barclays estimate concerns a component order in one quarter while Kuo’s estimate covers total orders or production over several quarters, the sources do not establish whether the numbers overlap. The evidence does not support saying Apple cut 13 million orders.

Did Apple cut iPhone 16 orders?

The most accurate answer is: analysts believed Apple was reducing some orders, but the company did not publicly verify the reported amounts. Barclays cited shorter waiting times in major regions, the gradual rollout of Apple Intelligence, limited adoption of those features outside the United States and what it viewed as limited hardware differentiation. These were analysts’ explanations for a possible adjustment, not statements from Apple.

Why did analysts suspect weaker demand?

Early delivery times were shorter

Morgan Stanley’s observations, reported by AppleInsider on September 25, compared average early-cycle lead times for the Pro models:

Model iPhone 16 lead time Comparable iPhone 15 lead time
iPhone 16 Pro Max 25.5 days 43.5 days
iPhone 16 Pro 18.5 days 32.5 days

Morgan Stanley also said that, across its data, the average iPhone 16 lead time was 14 days from pre-order to the observation point, “shortest amongst all cycles in the last 5 years and roughly in-line with the iPhone 12 cycle.” The bank warned that early lead times had “very limited predictive power.”

Lead time is not the same as demand

A short promised delivery date can mean weaker demand, but it can also mean Apple had more inventory ready or improved its launch allocation. The AppleInsider report explicitly noted that lead times depend on both supply and stock levels, so they cannot by themselves establish unit sales.

Later Pro-model data complicated the bearish reading

In a September 27 assessment reported by Investing.com, Morgan Stanley said Pro and Pro Max lead times had extended by about two days between its T+11 and T+14 observations. The bank also said an adjustment to wafer orders at TSMC did not, in its view, indicate softer iPhone 16 demand; excess processor inventory was a possible explanation. That is counterevidence to treating every upstream order change as a demand warning.

How many iPhone 16 orders were cut?

There is no publicly confirmed Apple number. The two widely cited estimates are:

  • About 3 million: Barclays’ possible component-order reduction for the December quarter, as reported by 9to5Mac.
  • Around 10 million: Ming-Chi Kuo’s estimate for order cuts across 4Q24–1H25, with most reductions affecting non-Pro models, as reported by 9to5Mac.

These are not interchangeable. They differ in source, period, model scope and measure. The 10-million estimate should not be presented as 10 million fewer phones already sold, and the two estimates should not be summed.

What did Apple’s financial results show?

Apple’s fiscal fourth-quarter 2024 iPhone revenue was $46.22 billion, up 6% year over year, according to The Associated Press’ report on Apple’s results published October 31, 2024. The quarter ran from July through September and included only the first few days of iPhone 16 sales.

That result provides useful company-wide context but cannot resolve the model-level question. Revenue is not unit volume, and the reporting period was too early to validate or disprove estimates covering the December quarter and the first half of 2025.

Is iPhone 16 demand weaker than expected?

The public evidence supports a cautious, mixed conclusion rather than a definitive yes. Shorter early lead times gave analysts a reason to investigate weaker demand or more conservative production. However, lead times are influenced by inventory, later Pro wait times lengthened, and Morgan Stanley did not interpret the reported TSMC wafer adjustment as proof of demand weakness.

The available reports therefore show analyst concern and revised forecasts, not a verified collapse in demand. They also do not establish whether Apple changed production because of demand, inventory balancing, component timing or a combination of factors.

What remains unverified?

  • Apple has not confirmed the reported three-million-unit or 10-million-unit reductions.
  • Apple has not disclosed model-specific iPhone 16 unit sales that would settle the non-Pro demand question.
  • The underlying Barclays and Morgan Stanley notes were reported through secondary coverage rather than published in full in these accounts.
  • No public evidence in these reports shows that the two estimates describe the same orders or can be combined.

Bottom line

Apple may have reduced iPhone 16 orders, as Barclays and Ming-Chi Kuo separately estimated in October 2024. The estimates range from a possible 3-million-unit component adjustment for the December quarter to around 10 million fewer orders over 4Q24–1H25, mostly in non-Pro models. But Apple did not confirm either figure, lead times are an imperfect demand gauge, and the company’s fiscal Q4 revenue covered only the launch’s first days. The defensible conclusion is that analysts saw signs of a possible production reset—not that Apple publicly acknowledged, or that the evidence proves, a specific order cut or demand collapse.
