Hewlett Packard Enterprise announced its acquisition of Cloud Cruiser on January 23, 2017, to strengthen measurement and billing for IT consumption, particularly through HPE Flexible Capacity. Cloud Cruiser’s software tracked usage and spending across IT environments; it was not a consumer finance product. The compatibility and product details below describe the acquisition-era offering and do not establish what is available today.

What did Cloud Cruiser do?

Cloud Cruiser provided software for tracking IT usage and spend. HPE said the software could help customers understand how they used IT resources and plan and manage their systems. Its December 2014 product description listed usage tracking by user and cost, detailed reporting and analysis, automated billing for downstream customers, granular consumption tracking, flexible pricing models, and decision analytics for hybrid-cloud and traditional computing environments. Those capabilities were described by the vendor, not independently verified performance results.

In January 2017 coverage, Cloud Cruiser was also described as working with providers including Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, so customers could measure cost and usage information across environments. That is a historical compatibility claim, not confirmation of present-day integrations or support. Cloud Cruiser’s December 2014 announcement and January 2017 coverage describe the offering at those times.

Why did HPE acquire Cloud Cruiser?

HPE linked the acquisition to insight into IT consumption and spending, and to its Flexible Capacity service model. Flexible Capacity let customers manage infrastructure in their own data centers while paying for it as a service. Measuring actual usage was therefore central to charging customers based on consumption, rather than simply a way to monitor public-cloud costs.

HPE executive Scott Weller described accurate metering and billing as a differentiating part of Flexible Capacity. HPE’s February 23, 2017 earnings transcript likewise connected Cloud Cruiser to insight into IT use and spend and to planning and managing IT systems.

How did Cloud Cruiser fit into HPE Flexible Capacity?

Cloud Cruiser supplied the measurement layer: it could track consumption so HPE could meter and bill for customers’ use of infrastructure. The model applied even when that infrastructure was located in a customer’s own data center. Contemporary coverage quoted Weller saying that measurement enabled HPE to bill for customers’ IT consumption and distinguished Flexible Capacity from other offers.

HPE also said it had experienced Cloud Cruiser’s value as a customer, using its technology to meter and bill for on-premises IT infrastructure in a pay-as-you-go model. Cloud Cruiser’s co-founder and CEO said the relationship with HP began in 2010, when HP became its first partner, product integration, and joint customer win. These statements describe the companies’ historical relationship and do not establish current service arrangements.

What is known about the acquisition date and terms?

  • January 23, 2017: HPE’s acquisition chronology lists Cloud Cruiser in the first quarter of fiscal 2017 under “Cloud Consumption Analytics Software.”
  • January 24, 2017: Contemporary coverage reported HPE’s plan to acquire the company and described the Flexible Capacity metering and billing use case.
  • February 23, 2017: HPE’s first-quarter fiscal 2017 earnings transcript discussed the acquisition and its expected role in Flexible Capacity.

The cited HPE chronology and earnings transcript do not state a distinct closing date or transaction price, so neither should be inferred from the announcement date.

What the announcement does—and does not—tell us

The acquisition was an enterprise software and services move: HPE sought to improve consumption measurement and billing, including for infrastructure operated in customer data centers. The 2017 AWS and Azure references establish only what contemporary coverage said about compatibility then. The available historical statements do not establish Cloud Cruiser’s current availability, supported integrations, editions, or service features.
