TDK announced on December 19, 2016, that its group company Micronas would be renamed TDK-Micronas. The company said the new name would make its connection to parent TDK clearer while retaining “Micronas,” a name it said was recognized in the automotive market. The announcement came after TDK completed its acquisition of Micronas in March 2016.
What changed—and when?
The December 19, 2016 announcement changed the company name from “Micronas” to “TDK-Micronas.” It followed an acquisition, but the two events were distinct: TDK said the acquisition was completed in March 2016, several months before the renaming.
TDK’s account of the sequence also refers to its December 17, 2015 announcement of plans to acquire Micronas shares for conversion into a subsidiary, and to an October 25, 2016 update describing Micronas’s integration into the TDK Group. TDK’s corporate history separately records Micronas Semiconductor Holding AG as joining the group in 2016 (TDK corporate history).
Why did TDK add its name?
TDK said the change was intended to make the company’s affiliation with its parent more apparent without dropping the Micronas name. Matthias Bopp, then CEO of TDK-Micronas, explained the decision in the announcement: “From a marketing point of view, it is particularly important to retain the product trade name as the company has established a high level of recognition on the Automotive market over many years”.

In other words, the announced name joined two signals: TDK affiliation and the continued use of Micronas as a familiar name. This is the rationale TDK gave at the time, rather than evidence of a separate change to the company’s products or operations.
What did Micronas do within TDK?
In its 2016 announcement, TDK described Micronas as its magnetic sensor competence center. It highlighted Hall-effect sensors and embedded motor-controller expertise for automotive and industrial markets. The same announcement characterized the company as a leading Hall-effect sensor supplier and reported more than 40 years of experience in the automotive industry; those are the company’s descriptions in 2016, not an independently established current ranking or product catalogue.

Which company names and locations appeared in the announcement?
The announcement identified TDK-Micronas GmbH in Freiburg, Germany, and also named group companies in Munich, Glenrothes, and Tokyo. These are names and locations reported in the 2016 announcement, not confirmation of the present legal status of each entity.
TDK’s corporate history corroborates that Micronas Semiconductor Holding AG joined the TDK Group in 2016. Neither that history entry nor the renaming announcement should be treated as a current register of subsidiaries or a definitive statement of today’s corporate structure.
