This is an editorial selection, not an official or universally agreed ranking: the stories are weighed by human impact, geopolitical consequences, regional reach, and effects likely to last beyond the year.
The Associated Press called 2024 “a year of monumental elections and political change” in its year-in-review. That captures one strand of the story, but the year was also shaped by continuing conflicts, displacement, climate risks and decisions about Europe’s future. The ten items below are not a comprehensive country-by-country account; available coverage does not support a single balanced ranking for all of EMEA.
What were the biggest EMEA stories of 2024?
-
Russia’s war against Ukraine continued
Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine remained a defining European security and humanitarian story. It continued to shape the continent’s politics and security choices, while inflicting ongoing harm on people in Ukraine. The year did not settle the war’s outcome.
-
The Gaza war and regional conflict widened
The war in Gaza continued, while conflict between Israel and Hezbollah brought Lebanon into a wider regional crisis. These are connected developments, but they are distinct theaters with different circumstances. Casualty totals should be tied to a named reporting authority and date; the figures available here do not establish one harmonized total across them.

Sudan’s war intensified a humanitarian and displacement crisis
Continuing violence in Sudan drove people to flee and added to an already severe humanitarian emergency. UNHCR estimated that nearly 123 million people worldwide had been forcibly displaced by conflict and persecution by the end of June 2024. That is a global figure, not a count for Sudan or for EMEA.
-
Syria’s Assad regime fell in December
The fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime was one of the year’s most consequential late-breaking developments in the Middle East. It marked a major political rupture, but it did not resolve what would follow: Syria’s transition and its wider consequences remained uncertain at the end of 2024.

European Parliament elections sharpened debate over the EU’s direction
Voters across the European Union elected a new European Parliament in June. The European Commission described the elections as a major democratic milestone. Their significance lay not only in the vote itself, but in the political debate it opened over the Union’s priorities and direction. No single election result should be taken as a complete account of political change across Europe.
-
South Africa’s election ended the ANC’s parliamentary majority
The African National Congress lost its parliamentary majority in South Africa’s 2024 election and entered a coalition arrangement, according to the Associated Press. The result was a major shift in the country’s national politics. It should be understood as a South African story, not as a proxy for elections or political trends across Africa as a whole.

The EU deepened its ties with Ukraine
The European Union opened accession negotiations with Ukraine and launched a support instrument with a maximum value of up to €50 billion. Those figures describe different things: the instrument’s ceiling was up to €50 billion, while Ukraine received €16.1 billion from it during 2024, according to the European Commission. The distinction matters when assessing how much support was actually delivered that year.
-
Extreme weather put climate impacts in the year’s headlines
Floods, earthquakes, fires and other extreme-weather events were among the major developments in the Associated Press’s year review. Their inclusion underlines how environmental hazards can become immediate public and policy concerns alongside wars and elections. The available broad overview does not establish a comparable event-by-event ranking for EMEA, so no individual disaster is singled out here without more specific reporting.

Bulgaria and Romania joined Schengen as Europe marked an enlargement anniversary
2024 marked the 20th anniversary of the 2004 EU enlargement, the largest in the Union’s history, according to the European Commission. The Commission also says Bulgaria and Romania joined the Schengen area in 2024, with border-free travel benefits for their citizens beginning in 2025. The anniversary and the Schengen development were separate milestones in Europe’s integration.
-
EU defence policy moved toward greater readiness
In March 2024, the European Commission presented a defence industry strategy and an investment programme. The proposals reflected a wider effort to strengthen European readiness amid heightened security concerns, including Russia’s war against Ukraine. They were policy initiatives, not proof that the EU’s defence capacity had already been transformed.

Wanderlust: A History of Walking- Wanderlust: A History of Walking
How should readers interpret a “top 10” list?
There is no authoritative EMEA-wide ranking with a common method behind these ten selections. The order is an editorial judgment based on human impact, geopolitical consequences, reach across the region, likely durability and the strength of available evidence—not a measured score or claim that every country is represented equally.
Audience attention is also not the same as importance. In the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism’s 2024 survey, the share of respondents who said they felt worn out by the news agenda was 44%, compared with 26% in 2019. That finding offers context about news fatigue; it does not measure which stories mattered most.
