The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Martin began as Dawson Chen’s attempt to build a more capable personal assistant: one people could reach by voice or messaging and connect to the tools they already used. Chen described the ambition as “building a personal AI like Jarvis using LLMs.” That was a founder’s vision, not proof that Martin matched the fictional assistant—or independently verified evidence of how well the product worked.
How Martin’s idea took shape
Chen’s account places the project’s roots in a childhood interest in JARVIS, the fictional AI assistant from the Iron Man stories. In a 2024 interview, he recalled that he and friends first explored a customer-support chatbot for grocery stores, then turned toward a personal assistant as language models and voice capabilities improved. This is founder-reported chronology, not an independently confirmed company history. 2024 interview
Chen later described rebuilding the effort with cofounder Ethan Hou. The team references vary across sources: Y Combinator’s 2024 launch announcement names Dawson Chen, Harsh Deep, and Arjun Dixit as founders, while Chen’s later account names Hou as the cofounder who joined him in rebuilding the project. Those accounts may describe different stages; they do not establish one definitive roster. Y Combinator launch announcement and Chen’s account
The product thesis: a conversational assistant that could act
Martin’s pitch was not simply to answer questions. In a July 2024 launch discussion, Chen called it “a better Siri with an LLM brain and deeper integrations with everyday apps.” He framed the proposed difference around interacting naturally, reaching the assistant through multiple channels, and giving it access to tools that could help carry out tasks. These were stated aims, not independent findings that Martin outperformed Siri or reliably completed those tasks. Chen’s July 2024 launch post

Voice and messaging as points of access
Chen said he wanted Martin to be available through voice and messaging, rather than only through a conventional app interface. His examples included voice, SMS, WhatsApp, email, and phone. The current US App Store listing likewise describes access through those channels for an iPhone and iPad assistant, but a vendor-controlled listing can change and does not establish present service status. Everyday tasks and integrations
The 2024 launch post described practical work such as calendar and reminder management, research, briefings, and conversations with contacts. The current US listing adds to-dos, email, Slack, and proactive assistance to its feature description. Together, the sources show the product’s intended breadth; they do not provide independent testing of integration depth, accuracy, or reliability. July 2024 launch post; US App Store listing

Memory and personal context
Chen also argued that an assistant could become more useful by drawing on prior conversations and connected apps, using that context to anticipate what a person might need. The launch discussion used phrases such as “morning syncs” and “evening debriefs” to convey the envisioned routine. Those phrases express the product concept, not measured outcomes or verified user preference. July 2024 launch post

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to interpret the JARVIS comparison
JARVIS works as shorthand for the ambition: an assistant that can understand a request, connect to useful context, and help across everyday tasks. Martin’s published descriptions point to the same intended ingredients—conversation, voice, integrations, and memory—but do not verify that the app delivered the breadth or autonomy suggested by the fictional comparison.

Its origin story and product thesis are clearest in Chen’s own accounts; the available public descriptions are not independent evaluations of performance.
