AMD later reported that its Data Center segment grew 7% in fiscal 2023 to $6.496 billion, but total company revenue fell 4% and the reported figures do not establish industry-wide dominance.
What Bloomberg predicted in January 2023
The January 31, 2023 Bloomberg News report, hosted by Data Center Knowledge, was published before AMD released its fourth-quarter 2022 results. “Set to dominate” was headline framing for a possible year of share gains, particularly against Intel; it was not a measurement of AMD’s market position.
Bloomberg reported brokers’ average AMD price target implied 19% potential upside for the shares. That figure was an estimate based on analyst targets at the time, not a guaranteed return or the stock’s eventual performance. The same report cited average analyst forecasts for 3% earnings-per-share growth and 6% revenue growth in 2023, while Intel was expected to post double-digit declines in both measures.
The bullish case centered on AMD continuing to take server-processor business from Intel and on a possible return of Meta spending for chips connected with its metaverse project. Bloomberg also cited Mercury Research’s assessment that Intel still held more than 70% of server-processor share. That was a period-specific, second-hand market-share figure reported in January 2023, not a current industry statistic.

What analysts said
Dan Morgan, senior portfolio manager at Synovus Trust Co., said: “AMD is still posting reasonably strong growth in its key data-center unit while Intel is sputtering.” Matthew Maley, chief market strategist at Miller Tabak + Co., said: “AMD’s report and guidance is going to be very important for the stock.” Both comments described the outlook surrounding AMD’s upcoming results, rather than a later assessment of market leadership.
What AMD actually reported for 2023
AMD’s official fiscal-year results provide the clearest answer about its own data-center business. The company reported Data Center revenue of $6.496 billion in 2023, up 7% from $6.043 billion in 2022. AMD attributed the increase primarily to higher sales of AMD Instinct GPUs and fourth-generation AMD EPYC CPUs.

| Measure | 2023 result | Comparison | What it shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| AMD Data Center revenue | $6.496 billion | Up 7% from $6.043 billion in 2022 | AMD’s segment grew during the year |
| AMD total revenue | $22.680 billion | Down 4% year over year | Data Center growth did not lift the entire company into growth |
| Data Center operating income | $1.267 billion | Down from $1.848 billion in 2022 | Revenue growth did not translate into higher segment operating income |
| Fourth-quarter Data Center revenue | $2.282 billion | Up 38% year over year and 43% sequentially | A particularly strong final quarter, driven by Instinct and fourth-generation EPYC sales |
The full-year number matters more than the final quarter when evaluating the 2023 claim. A 38% year-over-year increase in the fourth quarter was substantial, but it cannot be substituted for the 7% result across the entire fiscal year.
Why “dominate” overstates the evidence
AMD’s filing reports AMD’s segment revenue and profitability. It does not show that AMD supplied most data-center chips, overtook Intel across every server market, or led the wider industry in units, revenue, or operating profit.

Several metrics are easy to confuse:
- AMD Data Center revenue: the money AMD reported from its segment, including products such as EPYC CPUs and Instinct accelerators.
- Server-CPU market share: a market-wide measure that requires a defined source, period, geography, and product scope.
- Data-center chip industry leadership: a broader claim that could include CPUs, GPUs, networking silicon, custom chips, and other components.
- Operating income: a profitability measure that can move differently from revenue.
The January 2023 Bloomberg report supplied a dated server-processor-share reference for Intel, while AMD’s 2023 filing supplied AMD-specific financial results. Those are not a like-for-like comparison. The available evidence supports saying that AMD gained ground and grew its Data Center segment; it does not support declaring AMD the dominant supplier of the entire data-center chip industry.
How the other AMD businesses performed
AMD’s results were mixed outside Data Center:
- Client revenue fell 25% to $4.651 billion.
- Gaming revenue fell 9% to $6.212 billion.
- Embedded revenue rose 17% to $5.321 billion.
This mix explains why a growing data-center segment coexisted with a 4% decline in total company revenue. It also shows why segment growth alone is not enough to evaluate AMD’s overall financial performance.

The contemporaneous Q4 2022 signal
An early February 2023 Bloomberg report said AMD’s fourth-quarter 2022 Data Center revenue had increased 42% year over year to $1.7 billion. Chief Executive Lisa Su expected the data-center business to keep winning in 2023. That result and guidance helped support the bullish thesis at the time, but they were evidence from the start of the year—not the final 2023 outcome.

- The 19% figure was implied share-price upside from brokers’ average targets in January 2023, not a realized investment return.
- The 3% EPS and 6% revenue figures were analyst forecasts, not AMD’s reported results.
- AMD did report 7% full-year Data Center revenue growth, reaching $6.496 billion.
- AMD’s total revenue and Data Center operating income both declined on the comparisons reported by the company, despite segment revenue growth.
- The product drivers AMD identified were Instinct GPUs and fourth-generation EPYC CPUs.
Anyone comparing AMD with Intel should first choose one metric and keep the period and scope identical. Server-CPU share, data-center revenue, operating income, and customer adoption answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Bottom line on the 2023 claim
Bloomberg correctly identified a credible possibility that AMD would make further gains in data-center hardware during 2023. The eventual company results show that AMD’s Data Center segment did grow, but by 7% for the full year—not enough, by itself, to prove dominance of the broader chip industry. The strongest evidence for momentum came in the fourth quarter, while the full-year revenue, profit, and company-wide figures provide the necessary context.
