Moore Threads Technology opened at RMB650 on December 5, 2025—about 468.8% above its RMB114.28 offer price—after raising approximately RMB8 billion (about $1.1 billion) in Shanghai. The shares reached roughly 502% above the offer price intraday and closed at about RMB600.50, a 425.5% first-day gain. Those percentages describe different points in the session, not conflicting reports.

The debut showed how highly investors value Chinese semiconductor self-sufficiency and domestic AI capacity. It did not show that Moore Threads has matched Nvidia’s performance, software ecosystem, manufacturing scale or profitability.

What happened in Moore Threads’ IPO?

Moore Threads issued 70 million shares at RMB114.28 each on the Shanghai Stock Exchange’s STAR Market. Contemporary reports put the proceeds at approximately RMB8 billion, or roughly $1.1 billion to $1.13 billion depending on the exchange-rate date.

What is Moore Threads?

Beijing-based Moore Threads was founded in 2020 by Zhang Jianzhong, a former Nvidia executive. The company designs “full-function” graphics processing units (GPUs) for graphics rendering, artificial intelligence, scientific and engineering computing, video processing, desktops, cloud services and data centers.

“China’s Nvidia” is media and market shorthand, not Moore Threads’ official corporate identity. The comparison reflects its broad GPU ambitions, Zhang’s background and its role in China’s effort to develop domestic alternatives to foreign chip suppliers. The company describes itself as a full-function GPU developer in its Shanghai Stock Exchange profile and on its official website.

Products and software behind the story

Graphics and AI hardware

  • MTT S80: a desktop graphics card.
  • MTT S4000: an AI-computing accelerator aimed at higher-end data-center and intelligent-computing uses.
  • MTT S5000: an AI accelerator discussed in the company’s prospectus comparisons.

MUSA architecture and tools

Moore Threads’ MUSA architecture is intended to underpin its hardware and software ecosystem. The company lists the MUSA SDK, MUSA Deploy, MUSA Code, drivers and performance tools for application development and deployment. Its prospectus describes four architecture generations—Su Ti, Chun Xiao, Qu Yuan and Ping Hu—and support for numerical formats including FP64, FP32, TF32, FP16, BF16, FP8 and INT8.

Those architecture and format statements are company disclosures in the IPO prospectus, not independent benchmark results. For a buyer or investor, software support, drivers, libraries, framework compatibility and customer support can matter as much as theoretical silicon specifications.

How do Moore Threads’ specifications compare with Nvidia and AMD?

The prospectus supplies the following comparison for the MTT S80, Nvidia RTX 5090 and AMD RX 9070 XT:

Specification Moore Threads MTT S80 Nvidia RTX 5090 AMD RX 9070 XT
Architecture Chun Xiao Blackwell RDNA 4
Compute cores 4,096 21,760 4,096
Tensor cores 32 680 128
FP32 performance 14.7 TFLOPS 104.8 TFLOPS 48.66 TFLOPS
Memory 16 GB 32 GB 16 GB
Memory bandwidth 448 GB/s 1.79 TB/s 644.6 GB/s
Power 255 W 575 W 304 W

These are figures reproduced from Moore Threads’ prospectus. They establish that the company has products in the same broad categories as Nvidia and AMD; they do not establish equivalent real-world gaming, AI-training, inference or scientific performance. Workload, drivers, libraries, compiler optimization, interconnects, availability and total cost of ownership can change the outcome. The prospectus also compares the MTT S5000 with Nvidia B200 and H100 and AMD MI325X, but those comparisons are likewise company-supplied rather than independent tests.

Why investors bid the shares up so aggressively

Domestic supply is strategically valuable

China is investing heavily in semiconductor and AI infrastructure self-sufficiency. U.S. restrictions on advanced technology have increased the incentive for Chinese cloud providers, government institutions and enterprises to qualify local hardware. Moore Threads can benefit from demand that exists because foreign alternatives are restricted or politically difficult to obtain.

A scarce domestic pure-play listing

A listed company focused primarily on GPUs gives investors a rare way to express a view on Chinese AI hardware. Zhang’s Nvidia experience and the company’s full-function product strategy add to the narrative.

Limited supply met extreme retail demand

Reports of approximately 2,750-times retail oversubscription and a relatively limited public float can amplify first-day price movements. That trading dynamic says more about scarcity and expectations than about near-term earnings power.

The defensible interpretation is that investors were pricing in policy support, domestic supply value and possible future growth—not that Moore Threads had already overtaken Nvidia.

What the IPO money is meant to fund

The prospectus says proceeds are intended for next-generation AI and graphics-chip development and related strategic growth initiatives. Capital can finance research, product roadmaps, software tools, ecosystem development and capacity expansion. It does not automatically solve advanced manufacturing access, packaging and memory supply, customer qualification, reliability at scale or recurring profitability.

Investors should distinguish money raised from money already converted into sales. An IPO supplies a balance-sheet resource; execution determines whether that resource produces competitive products and cash flow.

Revenue is growing, but the company is still loss-making

Moore Threads was not profitable around the IPO. One report cited a 2024 net loss of approximately RMB1.6 billion, while another cited a first-half 2025 net loss of approximately RMB270 million. Reuters also reported a loss of approximately RMB723.5 million for a different comparable reporting period. These figures cover different periods, so they should not be added or treated as interchangeable; the prospectus is the appropriate reference for the definitive period-by-period accounts.

Revenue expectations were much stronger. Reuters reported a company forecast for 2025 sales growth of roughly 177% to 242%, with revenue potentially reaching about RMB1.5 billion. Separate coverage said first-half 2025 revenue had already exceeded full-year 2024 revenue. Forecasts and interim figures are not audited full-year results.

Reuters also reported that the IPO price represented approximately 123 times 2024 sales. That valuation required exceptional growth and eventual margin improvement before the business could justify it through earnings or cash generation.

What U.S. restrictions change—and what they do not

Potential opportunity

  • Domestic customers have stronger reasons to test and deploy Chinese accelerators.
  • Policy priorities can reduce resistance to immature products when local supply is strategically preferred.
  • Moore Threads can tailor hardware and software to Chinese models, clouds and procurement requirements.

Structural constraint

  • Restrictions can limit access to advanced manufacturing equipment, design tools, components and international supply chains.
  • The company must build a developer ecosystem while access to some global technologies is constrained.
  • Protected demand does not guarantee Nvidia-level performance, reliability or support.

Available coverage supports describing Moore Threads as a U.S.-restricted or blacklisted Chinese GPU maker. The precise legal scope and status of export controls can change and should not be inferred beyond the cited reporting.

What would make Moore Threads a credible long-term challenger?

  1. Sustained sales: growth should continue beyond a policy-driven initial order cycle.
  2. Improving economics: gross margins, operating losses and operating cash flow should move in the right direction.
  3. Large deployments: cloud, government, enterprise and research customers should move from pilots to repeat purchases.
  4. Independent testing: benchmarks should cover training, inference, graphics and scientific workloads outside company-controlled demonstrations.
  5. Developer adoption: MUSA tools should support major frameworks and attract developers who can remain on the platform.
  6. Reliable supply: advanced chips, memory, packaging and boards must be available at commercial scale.
  7. A competitive roadmap: future products must close the gap with current Nvidia and AMD generations, not merely replicate older ones.

Risks for shareholders and hardware buyers

  • Valuation risk: a triple-digit sales multiple leaves little room for slower growth or delayed profitability.
  • Execution risk: research spending may rise faster than revenue.
  • Technology risk: raw TFLOPS, core counts and memory bandwidth do not predict complete application performance.
  • Software risk: CUDA’s libraries, tools and developer base are difficult to reproduce quickly.
  • Supply-chain risk: export restrictions and access to advanced manufacturing can constrain product generations.
  • Customer-concentration risk: orders tied to policy or a few state-linked buyers may not become durable commercial demand.
  • Market risk: an unusually speculative debut can be followed by sharp volatility as lockups expire and expectations normalize.
  • Buyer risk: availability, warranty, language support, drivers and resale value may be geography-specific, particularly outside mainland China.

What to watch after the debut

  • Audited revenue, gross margin and operating cash flow.
  • Shipments and customer deployments of the MTT S4000 and S5000.
  • Independent benchmark results across AI, graphics and scientific workloads.
  • MUSA SDK adoption, framework compatibility and developer activity.
  • Evidence that pilots become repeat orders rather than one-time policy purchases.
  • New export-control developments and their effect on manufacturing access.
  • Share unlocks, public-float changes and post-IPO volatility.

What this means for a personal investor

The debut is best understood as a high-expectations semiconductor listing, not as proof of a profitable Nvidia substitute. An investor evaluating the shares should separate three questions: whether China needs domestic GPUs, whether Moore Threads can execute technically and commercially, and whether the market price already discounts years of success. The first question has a strong strategic answer; the second remains unproven; the third was exceptionally demanding at the IPO price.

For organizations considering the hardware, Moore Threads may be relevant where domestic procurement and data residency matter. Validate framework compatibility, independent performance, supply, support and total cost before treating it as a drop-in Nvidia replacement. The company’s official site lists products, developer tools, support and trial pathways, but public pricing and universally available purchasing options are not established here.

The Bottom Line

Moore Threads’ December 5, 2025 debut proved that investors place a premium on China’s domestic AI-chip ambition: the stock closed 425.5% above its offer price after raising about RMB8 billion. It did not prove technological parity or profitability. The long-term test is whether the company can turn policy-supported demand into independently validated performance, recurring revenue, improving margins and durable cash flow.
