Fortinet Bolsters Endpoint Security with enSilo Acquisition

Fortinet bought endpoint-security provider enSilo in 2019 to strengthen EDR and its Security Fabric. Here is what the acquisition added, why the $15.8 million figure is an accounting disclosure rather than an announced deal price, and what Fortinet’s 2026 endpoint strategy does—and does not—prove.

Fortinet completed its acquisition of privately held endpoint-security company enSilo on October 28, 2019. The deal added enSilo’s endpoint detection and response (EDR) technology to Fortinet’s planned Security Fabric expansion, while Fortinet’s later 2019 Form 10-K recorded a preliminary accounting purchase price of $15.8 million. Those are different disclosures: the acquisition announcement said transaction terms were not disclosed.

What Fortinet acquired

enSilo was an endpoint-security software and services provider, not a hardware manufacturer. Fortinet described its technology as providing automated, real-time protection, detection and response for advanced threats.

According to Fortinet’s acquisition announcement, enSilo contributed:

  • Endpoint detection and response capabilities for investigating and responding to incidents.
  • Patented code-tracing technology that Fortinet said was intended to help prevent data exfiltration and ransomware.
  • A lightweight agent with support across Linux, Windows and macOS.
  • Coordination between IoT access control and endpoint security.
  • Cloud and on-premises deployment options, including multitenancy and capacity to scale to hundreds of thousands of endpoints.

These are capabilities Fortinet attributed to enSilo in the announcement, not results from an independent product test.

Why Fortinet made the deal

Fortinet said the acquisition would strengthen both its endpoint portfolio and its broader Security Fabric by adding automated endpoint detection, protection and response. The company also said the technology could support a combined managed detection and response offering for managed security service providers.

Fortinet identified planned integrations with FortiSIEM, FortiInsight user and entity behavior analytics (UEBA) features, and FortiNAC. The announcement also described enSilo as compatible with FortiGate, FortiSandbox, FortiSIEM and the FortiClient Fabric Agent before the acquisition.

“Planned integration” is the important qualification. The 2019 announcement stated Fortinet’s intent; it did not establish that every integration was subsequently delivered or remains available under the same product names.

Acquisition timeline and disclosed price

Date What was reported
October 28, 2019 Fortinet announced that it had completed the acquisition of enSilo. The company said transaction terms were not disclosed.
2019 Form 10-K Fortinet reported that it acquired all outstanding enSilo shares on October 28 and recorded a preliminary $15.8 million purchase price for business-combination accounting.
July 14, 2026 Fortinet announced additional FortiEndpoint capabilities, including AI-application visibility and control, native data-loss prevention, risk scoring and AI-assisted operations. The release said enhancements were expected in the third quarter of 2026.
September 11, 2026 Fortinet described FortiEndpoint as a unified endpoint platform spanning endpoint protection, EDR, zero-trust network access, secure access service edge and data-loss prevention.

The $15.8 million figure should not be presented as a price Fortinet publicly announced in October 2019. It is a preliminary purchase-price figure in the later SEC filing, prepared for accounting purposes. Accounting purchase price can include the valuation of acquired assets, liabilities and other adjustments and is not necessarily the same as a separately negotiated cash price.

How the deal fits Fortinet’s endpoint strategy in 2026

Fortinet’s 2026 materials show a strategy of consolidating endpoint functions under FortiEndpoint. The company describes one endpoint approach covering EPP, EDR, ZTNA, SASE and DLP, with a unified agent, console and license.

That current positioning demonstrates Fortinet’s broader endpoint direction, but the reviewed announcements do not establish a direct product-lineage claim from enSilo to FortiEndpoint or FortiEDR. They also do not independently confirm the availability of every capability announced for expected third-quarter 2026 delivery.

What the acquisition means for readers and investors

It expanded Fortinet beyond network appliances

enSilo gave Fortinet an endpoint-software and EDR capability to complement its network, security-operations and access-control products. That combination is strategically useful because organizations increasingly need endpoint telemetry and response alongside network defenses.

Integration execution mattered more than the announcement

The value of the transaction depended on whether Fortinet could turn the planned links to SIEM, UEBA and network-access products into usable, supported workflows. The acquisition release alone does not provide adoption, revenue, performance or retention results.

The disclosed accounting amount is modest but not a standalone valuation signal

The $15.8 million preliminary accounting amount provides a figure in Fortinet’s filing, but it should not be used by itself to infer enSilo’s ongoing revenue contribution, product profitability or the return generated by the acquisition.

What is—and is not—established

  • Established: Fortinet completed the acquisition on October 28, 2019, and enSilo provided endpoint-security and EDR products and services.
  • Established: Fortinet publicly described intended integrations and a $15.8 million preliminary accounting purchase price in its 2019 Form 10-K.
  • Not established by these announcements: independent performance superiority, a confirmed later product lineage, customer or revenue results, or delivery of every planned integration.
  • For current product checks: verify Fortinet’s latest documentation for feature availability, licensing and deployment details, particularly for capabilities announced as expected in third-quarter 2026.
