Instead, he encountered a red-haired woman avatar representing recruiting startup Fairgo. The September 2024 exchange, reported by 404 Media and followed up by Futurism, became a vivid example of how automated hiring can feel unfamiliar—and why candidates want clear answers about evaluation, privacy and accessibility.
What happened in the interview
Ryan joined a video call for a real job application and found that the interviewer was an AI-generated video avatar rather than a human recruiter. In the exchange quoted by 404 Media on September 27, 2024, the avatar asked about his work experience and said, “I find it helps when candidates tell me a story in answering the questions.” Ryan’s smirk and visible skepticism helped make the encounter memorable online.
Futurism’s October 1 follow-up identified Ryan as a marketer and self-described disabled athlete. He questioned whether an automated system could understand emotion and facial reactions well enough to produce a “well-rounded interview.” He also raised concerns about disability disclosure and remote work. Those are Ryan’s reported views about the experience, not proof that this particular system discriminated against him.
Why an AI-avatar interview unsettled him
The surprise was not simply that software asked questions. A human-looking avatar can create the expectation of a human conversation while the underlying process may involve scripts, automated analysis or both. Ryan’s criticism focused on whether a system could interpret the context conveyed through tone, expression and other forms of communication, especially for disabled candidates whose mannerisms may not match assumptions built into an automated process.

Ryan described the experience to 404 Media as “a perfect demonstration of late stage capitalism.” Futurism quoted his conclusion that it was “laughable at best and terrifying at worst.” These comments capture his reaction; the available reporting does not establish how often applicants encounter AI avatars or what outcomes they produce compared with human interviews.
What Fairgo said in 2024—and what its site says now
Fairgo’s CEO, Julian Bright, told Futurism in 2024 that the system was intended to reduce human bias, did not select candidates and did not use interview audio or video to evaluate them. Those assurances describe the configuration Fairgo discussed at the time. The reporting does not establish exactly which settings or data practices applied to Ryan’s interview.

Fairgo’s current employer-facing website describes a broader platform for live AI video interviews, transcripts, scorecards and shortlists. It says candidates can interview on their own schedule and that employers can review summaries before deciding whom to advance. The site also says its AI evaluates skills, culture fit and potential. Current marketing may not describe the 2024 system.

Fairgo’s performance numbers are company claims
Fairgo’s current homepage displays claims of “50%” faster time to hire, “25%” fewer interviews, “90%” candidate satisfaction and “3x” more candidates screened. The page does not state a study, sample, methodology or publication year for these figures. They should therefore be read as vendor marketing, not independently verified statistics.

What applicants can ask before agreeing to an AI interview
The incident does not establish a universal standard for AI hiring. Candidates can request concrete information from the employer or vendor before beginning:
- Is the system only scheduling and asking questions, or does it score answers or recommend candidates?
- Which criteria and data are used, and does a human review the transcript or recommendation?
- Can a human interviewer replace the avatar or override an automated assessment?
- What notice and reasonable accommodations are available for disabled applicants?
- How are audio, video, transcripts and other application data stored, shared and deleted?
Answers may differ by employer, product version and jurisdiction. The Fairgo reporting reviewed here does not provide a representative study of candidate outcomes or accessibility effects, so one striking interview should not be treated as proof that all AI-avatar hiring works—or fails—the same way.

What this story actually proves
It documents one applicant’s unexpected encounter with an AI avatar during a job application and the questions that encounter raised about human judgment, disability and data use. It does not show how common avatar interviews are, whether Ryan was rejected because of the system, or whether Fairgo’s current product operates exactly as the 2024 interview did. Those distinctions matter when evaluating both the technology and the financial consequences of a hiring process that may affect a candidate’s next paycheck.
