The incident was real, but the label was wrong. On June 26, 2024, Apple’s App Store billing system generated roughly 780,000 unauthorized charges totaling more than HUF 2 billion against Hungarian bank cards. Hungary’s central bank, the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB), attributed the event to a technical failure involving Apple’s international card-acceptance partner and reported no indication of a cyberattack. The affected channel was App Store billing—not ordinary Apple Pay tap-to-pay purchases.
The MNB said unauthorized amounts were due back in full. The documented event is historical; the available official statements do not establish that the same Hungarian incident is occurring in August 2026.
What happened on June 26, 2024?
Hungarian customers began seeing repeated Apple-related debits during an approximately two-hour window, from about 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. local time. Many reports described numerous small charges arriving in rapid succession, sometimes matching earlier App Store purchases or subscriptions.
The MNB later reported approximately 780,000 unauthorized transactions worth more than HUF 2 billion. Those are rounded official totals, not an average charge. Contemporary reporting included one customer who saw about 74 transactions totaling nearly US$1,500; that is an individual reported example, not a nationwide statistic (MacRumors).

- SCREEN & CAMERA, GUARDED: Raised edges buffer your screen and lenses from scratches; precision cutouts keep the Camera Control button, Action button, charger port, and speaker fully accessible, whether you toss it face-down or drop it edge-first
- NOT COMPATIBLE WITH MAGSAFE OR WIRELESS CHARGERS: Cable charging works faster anyways, trust us; unlike a folio case that flips open and adds bulk, Wallet Slayer keeps one molded-in slot so your screen stays accessible with no hinge or cover
Banks received a large volume of complaints and contacted Apple. Apple acknowledged that some cards had been incorrectly charged because of a technical problem involving an external partner. The MNB classified the debits as unauthorized and pressed payment providers to compensate customers without delay (MNB).
Why “Apple Pay” is a misleading description
Apple Pay, Apple Wallet and App Store billing are related to Apple devices but are not the same payment channel.

| Service | What it does | Relevance to the Hungarian incident |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Pay | Wallet-based contactless, in-app or online checkout using a device-specific payment number and transaction codes. | There was no reported broad failure of contactless terminals or Apple Pay tokens. |
| Apple Wallet | Stores payment cards and can display transaction activity. | Removing a card here would not necessarily remove the card used for App Store billing. |
| App Store billing | Charges the payment method attached to an Apple Account for apps, subscriptions, media, iCloud and related purchases. | This is the channel identified by the Hungarian Banking Association. |
The Banking Association said the erroneous transactions were technical repetitions of past or current App Store purchases or subscriptions. It also said physical-terminal purchases and cash withdrawals were not affected (Hungarian Banking Association).
A card can therefore be saved to an Apple Account for App Store billing even when the disputed transaction was not an Apple Pay purchase. Contemporary Hungarian coverage warned that deleting the card from Wallet alone might not address the account-level payment method (24.hu).

Why users thought Apple Pay was responsible
- Bank alerts may use confusing Apple-related merchant descriptors.
- Many affected customers also had the same card in Apple Wallet.
- Headlines commonly used “Apple Pay” as shorthand for any Apple-related card charge.
- The cards were often used primarily with Apple devices, making the connection seem obvious.
- Wallet activity is not always the final or complete card record.
These clues explain the confusion but do not establish that a contactless Apple Pay transaction caused an individual debit.
Was this fraud or a cyberattack?
The strongest official explanation was a processing failure, not a confirmed attack. The MNB said the problem occurred at Apple’s international card-acceptance partner and found no indication of a cyberattack. The Banking Association likewise reported no indications that customer data had been misused or compromised (MNB; Banking Association). That does not make ordinary card fraud impossible; an unrelated unfamiliar transaction still requires the issuing bank’s investigation.

What kinds of charges appeared?
- Repeated small debits in a short period.
- Amounts resembling earlier App Store purchases or subscription payments.
- Charges that appeared linked to services customers believed they had canceled.
- Entries that remained visible after a card was frozen, creating uncertainty about delayed postings, retries or reversals.
The formal industry description was narrower than some individual accounts: erroneous technical repetition of past or current App Store purchases or subscriptions. A descriptor alone cannot prove whether a cancellation was effective, a payment was delayed, or a charge was unauthorized.

The MNB stated that the full amount of unauthorized, unapproved transactions was owed back to affected customers (MNB). A later update said Apple and financial providers were returning the incorrectly charged amounts and that compensation was progressing quickly (MNB).

For an individual account, distinguish the entry’s status:
- Posted unauthorized charge: ask the card issuer to open the appropriate unauthorized-transaction or dispute case.
- Pending authorization or temporary hold: it may disappear or change without a separate refund entry.
- Duplicate display without a second debit: confirm the settled balance before treating it as a loss.
What an affected customer should do
- Check the bank record. Note the date, time, amount, currency, merchant descriptor and whether each item is pending or posted. The card issuer’s ledger is the authoritative final record.
- Review Apple purchase history. Check the Apple Account/App Store history, active subscriptions and Family Sharing purchases. A matching item does not by itself prove the debit was correctly processed, and a missing item does not by itself prove card theft.
- Use Wallet as supporting evidence only. Apple says Wallet history may not show the final debited amount and directs payment questions to the card issuer (Apple Support).
- Contact the issuing bank. Ask whether the entry is an App Store card-not-present charge or a genuine Apple Pay transaction, whether it is pending or settled, and whether a card block, replacement or separate wallet-token suspension is needed.
- Contact Apple through official channels. Use Apple Support or the account’s purchase-reporting tools, including Apple’s Hungary Apple Pay support page (Apple Support).
- Preserve evidence. Keep bank alerts, statement screenshots, Apple receipts and purchase-history screens, plus complaint reference numbers and support dates.
If the bank does not resolve a complaint, use its formal complaints process and then the applicable Hungarian financial-consumer-protection or dispute-resolution route. The correct remedy depends on whether the transaction is pending, settled, reversed or genuinely unauthorized.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every Apple descriptor means Apple Pay.
- Deleting only the Wallet card while leaving the Apple Account payment method unchanged.
- Treating a pending authorization as a completed debit.
- Assuming a canceled-subscription description proves exactly how the transaction was generated.
- Calling phone numbers supplied in unsolicited texts or emails instead of using official Apple or bank channels.
- Concluding that a data breach occurred solely because several Apple-related debits appeared.
Do not confuse this with the October 2024 incident
In October 2024, a separate App Store problem caused some transactions to be displayed twice even though customers had not actually been debited twice. The MNB reported that later issue as resolved (MNB). It should not be merged with the June mass-charge event.
The Bottom Line
The June 26, 2024 Hungarian event was an App Store billing and payment-processing failure, not evidence that ordinary Apple Pay contactless payments were hacked. Check the settled bank statement, then work with the card issuer and Apple; unauthorized amounts were covered by the MNB’s full-reimbursement position.
