OpenAI announced on May 21, 2025 that it would acquire io Products, the AI-device startup co-founded by Jony Ive and former Apple leaders. Reports valued the all-equity transaction at approximately $6.4 billion to $6.5 billion, while OpenAI said it would issue about $5 billion in OpenAI equity for the remaining business after an earlier investment. The io team officially joined OpenAI on July 9, 2025.
This was not a purchase of a shipping product or an established hardware business. OpenAI acquired a product-and-engineering team working on a prototype for AI-native consumer hardware. As of August 16, 2026, the product’s form, name, price and release date remained unconfirmed, while trademark litigation over “io” and a separate Apple trade-secret lawsuit had added legal and execution risk.
What OpenAI actually acquired
The target was io Products, Inc., founded in 2024 by Jony Ive, Scott Cannon, Evans Hankey and Tang Tan. It was a development operation, not a publicly launched consumer-device company with reported mass-market sales. OpenAI acquired the remaining company and absorbed its team.
OpenAI’s announcement described work on a new generation of AI-powered computers and said a prototype already existed. It did not identify a finished product, operating system, specifications, price or launch date. The announcement is available from OpenAI; contemporary acquisition coverage came from Reuters and the Associated Press.

Why some reports say $6.4 billion and others say $6.5 billion
The headline figure is an approximate valuation, not a $6.4 billion cash cheque. Initial reports used roughly $6.4 billion; other coverage rounded it to about $6.5 billion. OpenAI said the consideration for the remaining business was approximately $5 billion in OpenAI stock, reflecting the company’s earlier investment and the all-equity structure.
| Figure | What it represents |
|---|---|
| Approximately $6.4 billion | Initial reported valuation of the transaction |
| Approximately $6.5 billion | Rounded valuation used in later coverage |
| Approximately $5 billion | OpenAI’s stated stock consideration for the remaining business |
| Cash paid | Not stated; the announced structure was all-stock |
Use “roughly $6.5 billion” or “approximately $6.4 billion to $6.5 billion” rather than presenting $6.4 billion as an exact purchase price. See the original announcement at OpenAI and reporting from The Guardian and Axios.
Jony Ive’s role and the team around him
Ive is taking broad design and creative responsibility across OpenAI; he is not identified as the company’s chief executive or sole hardware designer. His firm, LoveFrom, had been working with Sam Altman and OpenAI before the acquisition.
The deal also brought former Apple hardware and design leaders, including Tang Tan and Evans Hankey. Their value is potentially as significant as the prototype itself: industrial design judgment, product-development experience and relationships needed to move from a concept to manufactured hardware. LoveFrom’s continuing participation should not automatically be treated as an employment arrangement for every designer associated with the firm.

What product is OpenAI building?
Confirmed:
- OpenAI and Ive were developing AI-native consumer hardware.
- A prototype existed when OpenAI announced the collaboration.
- The stated ambition was to move beyond conventional app, keyboard and screen interfaces.
Not confirmed:
- A smartphone replacement or “iPhone killer.”
- A pendant, pin, glasses, earbuds, speaker, robot or other specific form factor.
- A screen, camera, subscription, operating system, price or battery specification.
- A firm shipping date.
Court-related reporting indicated that an early concept was not expected to be an in-ear product or conventional wearable, but that is an attributed development detail, not a final consumer specification. See TechCrunch’s report on court filings and the Ninth Circuit opinion.
Why OpenAI wants its own hardware
The strategic case is about control of the interface and distribution, not simply adding another gadget to OpenAI’s lineup.
Reduce dependence on platform owners
Most OpenAI use currently happens through devices and operating systems controlled by Apple, Google, Microsoft and other companies. An owned device could give OpenAI a direct relationship with users instead of relying on a rival’s app store, defaults or product roadmap.
Design an interface around models
A dedicated device could be built around voice, context, cameras, sensors and other model capabilities from the start, rather than forcing an AI assistant into a phone interface designed for conventional apps.

Use design as a differentiator
Ive’s record gives OpenAI credibility in industrial design and consumer-product development. That reputation may help attract partners and attention, but it is not evidence that an unreleased product will succeed.
Create a new business relationship
Hardware could support device revenue, subscriptions or an ecosystem in which OpenAI controls more of the user experience. Whether those economics can justify a multibillion-dollar bet is unproven.
Why the project is difficult
No demonstrated product-market fit
io had not publicly shipped a mass-market product when OpenAI acquired it. A prototype shows technical and design progress, not sustained demand or reliable production.
Hardware has different economics
OpenAI would face manufacturing commitments, certification, supply-chain management, inventory, returns, repairs, distribution and customer support—obligations that differ sharply from software deployment.

AI must be dependable in daily use
An AI device has to respond quickly, work consistently and provide useful results in noisy, mobile settings. Cloud dependence introduces connectivity and latency constraints; local processing introduces its own cost and capability trade-offs.
Power and privacy are central
An assistant that is always available needs microphones, networking and battery capacity. A device that listens, sees or infers context also creates heightened questions about consent, data retention, security and use in homes and workplaces.
The category has a warning sign
Humane’s AI Pin demonstrated how difficult it is to make a new AI-hardware category useful, fast and compelling. That experience does not prove OpenAI’s device will fail, because the products may differ materially, but it raises the standard for execution.
Legal and operational complexity
The project combines model serving, hardware engineering, industrial design, manufacturing and software support. Trademark and trade-secret disputes could require a rebrand, restrict recruiting, change designs or delay release.

What happened to the “io” name?
iyO, another AI-hardware startup, sued OpenAI, io Products, Sam Altman and Jony Ive, alleging that “io” was confusingly similar to its mark. A federal court entered interim restrictions concerning use of the disputed branding, and the Ninth Circuit upheld the relevant order in December 2025. The district-court case record is at the Northern District of California; the appellate decision is at the Ninth Circuit.
In an April 2026 filing, OpenAI indicated that it did not plan to use “io” for the eventual hardware product. July 2026 reporting said the case had been paused while the parties pursued settlement discussions, but a completed settlement was not confirmed at the August 16, 2026 cutoff. The dispute concerns branding and litigation posture; it does not establish that OpenAI copied iyO’s product or that the acquisition was unlawful. The filing is available at this court document, with settlement reporting from 9to5Mac.
What the Apple lawsuit alleges
In July 2026, Apple sued OpenAI, io Products, Tang Tan and Chang Liu in California. According to Apple’s complaint, former employees shared or helped misappropriate confidential information and trade secrets relevant to OpenAI’s hardware effort. Apple sought court intervention that could affect development. OpenAI disputed Apple’s characterization.
Those are allegations, not established findings. No court had finally determined that OpenAI stole Apple technology at the cutoff. Coverage of the filing is available from the Associated Press, Axios and Tom’s Hardware.

- An official product reveal and the final form factor.
- A product name that replaces or avoids the disputed “io” branding.
- Price, subscription requirements and whether the device works independently or needs a phone.
- Its privacy controls, data-retention policy and handling of microphones, cameras and contextual inference.
- Resolution of the iyO case and any injunction, discovery ruling or other major order in Apple’s case.
- Manufacturing and distribution partners, followed by a confirmed shipping date.
Earlier expectations pointed to 2026, but later reports suggested delay or uncertainty. OpenAI had not publicly confirmed final specifications, pricing or a launch date by August 16, 2026.
The Bottom Line
OpenAI’s purchase of io Products was a roughly $6.4 billion-to-$6.5 billion all-equity bet on owning a new AI interface, with about $5 billion in stated stock consideration for the remaining business. Its ultimate value cannot yet be judged by consumer sales: no confirmed commercial product had launched by August 16, 2026, and branding, litigation and engineering questions remained unresolved.
