MWC 2025: AI May Be Nudging Some Smartphone Users to Upgrade Sooner

AI influenced some early-adopter upgrades after 2024 launches, but trade-in data does not prove a universal replacement-cycle boom. Here’s how MWC 2025 features, support and trade-in economics affect your decision.

Short answer: AI appears to have encouraged some early adopters to trade in relatively new phones after major launches in 2024, but the evidence does not show that everyone started replacing smartphones faster. Assurant’s figures track devices entering trade-in programs—not the ownership habits of all phone users—and its 2025 data showed average trade-in age rising again.

MWC 2025, held in Barcelona from March 3–6, showed where manufacturers are heading: on-device assistants, translation, summaries, generative photo tools and AI features that connect phones with laptops, tablets, wearables and glasses. Whether upgrading makes financial sense depends on feature availability, trade-in economics, software support and the usefulness of those tools to you.

What Assurant’s trade-in data actually shows

Assurant reported that the average age of devices entering some of its trade-in and upgrade programs fell after the Galaxy S24 and iPhone 16 launches. Android devices averaged 3.67 years at trade-in in Q1 2024 and 3.38 years in Q3. iPhones averaged 3.78 years in Q2 and 3.63 years in Q4.

Period Category Average age at trade-in
Q1 2024 Android 3.67 years
Q3 2024 Android 3.38 years
Q2 2024 iPhone 3.78 years
Q4 2024 iPhone 3.63 years

Assurant also said U.S. consumers received about $4.5 billion through mobile trade-in programs in 2024, 5% more than in 2023. The iPhone 13 became the most frequently turned-in iPhone during the second half of the year, while the Galaxy S21 remained the leading Android trade-in model overall. See Assurant’s 2024 report.

Those are signals, not a census of smartphone owners. The figures describe devices received through participating programs, their age and trade-in value. They do not establish how long the average person keeps a phone, whether AI caused a particular purchase, or whether AI mattered more than battery wear, damage, cameras, 5G or a carrier promotion. The sample can shift when subsidies, launch offers, resale values or participating partners change.

What happened after the AI-phone launches?

Assurant’s later annual report provides an important counterpoint. In 2025, average age at trade-in increased to 3.80 years for iPhones and 3.96 years for Android phones; Android devices reached 4.1 years in Q4. That pattern is inconsistent with a simple, permanent move to annual upgrades. Read the 2025 trade-in report.

The defensible conclusion is narrower: AI may have given early adopters an additional reason to upgrade around major launches, while most owners continued weighing price, performance, support and condition.

Why AI turned into a hardware story at MWC 2025

IDC described on-device AI as the event’s central device trend, while Counterpoint highlighted AI-connected phones and other smart devices. Demonstrations and product strategies centered on:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Natural-language assistants and personalized recommendations.
  • Real-time translation, transcription and call or message summaries.
  • Generative image creation and editing, including camera enhancements.
  • Semantic search across apps and files.
  • Continuity between phones, computers, tablets, wearables, glasses and XR devices.

On-device processing can reduce latency and sometimes keep data off the cloud. It also requires capable processors, neural-processing hardware, memory, cameras and operating-system support. Other functions remain cloud-based, so the label “AI phone” does not describe one uniform capability. MWC demonstrations were not guarantees that every feature worked on every model, language or country version. Analyses from IDC and Counterpoint describe the broader event direction.

How manufacturers used MWC to sell the upgrade

Samsung’s broader AI platform

Samsung positioned the Galaxy S25 family, the planned Galaxy S25 Edge, new A-series phones and Project Moohan within a wider mobile-AI strategy spanning phones, networks and connected devices. Samsung said the new A-series models would receive six generations of operating-system upgrades and six years of security updates, subject to the models and markets covered by its announcement. That commitment can appeal to someone planning to keep a phone for years; it does not automatically imply faster replacement. Details are in Samsung’s MWC announcement.

A wider industry push

MWC also featured AI concepts and products from TCL, HONOR, Lenovo, Xiaomi, TECNO and HMD, alongside eSIM, OLED, high-refresh-rate displays, sustainability and connected-device integration. The event demonstrated an industry strategy, not proof that consumers had already changed their replacement cycle.

What an AI feature really requires

  • Hardware: Check the processor’s neural capability, RAM, storage, camera and microphone quality, battery health and cellular compatibility.
  • Software: Some tools arrive on older phones through operating-system or app updates, while others are restricted to newer chipsets.
  • Connectivity: Determine whether the feature works offline or requires a cloud connection, account or recurring subscription.
  • Availability: Confirm country, language, carrier, age and software-version requirements. A feature shown in Barcelona may not be available in the United States or in your language.
  • Reliability and privacy: Consider accuracy, data retention, battery use and whether the feature can be disabled.

Who has the strongest case for upgrading?

  • An early adopter who values new form factors or cross-device AI workflows.
  • A professional who will regularly use on-device transcription, translation or document tools.
  • A mobile photographer who needs newer camera hardware and generative editing.
  • An owner whose battery, performance or software support is already inadequate.
  • A buyer receiving an unusually high trade-in credit that materially lowers the total cost.

Who should wait?

  • People whose main uses are messaging, browsing, streaming, navigation and ordinary photography.
  • Owners whose current phone already receives the desired AI feature through software.
  • Anyone paying full price for modest gains in battery, camera, display or durability.
  • Privacy-sensitive users uncomfortable with cloud processing, account requirements or uncertain AI output.
  • Buyers facing a new plan, installment term, subscription or storage expense solely to obtain a lightly used feature.

A personal-finance test before you buy

  1. Name the feature: Confirm the exact function, model requirement, country, language and whether it is free or subscription-based.
  2. Calculate the hardware gap: Compare processor, RAM, storage, battery condition, cameras and support dates with your current phone.
  3. Calculate the economic gap: Compare full retail price with manufacturer, carrier and independent trade-in quotes. Include required plans, installment periods, accessories, protection and any credit-expiration rules.
  4. Value longevity: Check guaranteed operating-system and security support, battery-replacement options, repairability and parts access.
  5. Compare alternatives: Keeping your phone, replacing its battery, buying certified refurbished or waiting for a later generation may deliver better value.
  6. Complete the trade-in safely: Back up data, remove accounts, disable device-tracking locks, factory-reset the phone, photograph its condition and retain shipment or receipt records.

Trade-in, refurbished and protection choices

Manufacturer programs such as Samsung Trade-In and Apple Trade In offer convenience. Carrier offers from Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile can be valuable, but headline credits commonly depend on an eligible plan, financed device, qualifying trade-in and many months of bill credits. Independent buyback or private sale may produce a different net amount.

For expensive new hardware, compare accidental-damage coverage from AppleCare+, Samsung Care+ or Asurion with existing carrier, credit-card, renters or homeowners coverage. Deductibles, exclusions and claim limits matter more than the product name.

The bottom line for 2026 buyers

AI is a credible upgrade trigger for a subset of users, especially when a desired function is hardware-exclusive and a trade-in promotion reduces the cost. Assurant’s late-2024 data supports that limited story. It does not prove a universal acceleration, and the longer device ages reported for 2025 show why “AI makes everyone upgrade faster” is too broad. Buy when the specific capability solves a real problem at an acceptable total cost; otherwise, keep, repair or buy refurbished hardware.
