West Brom Building Society is carrying out a five-year digital-transformation programme announced in May 2025. It is designed to add a mobile app and other digital channels while keeping the society’s 34 branches and telephone service. Savings are being moved from the legacy Unisys Financial Services System to 10x Banking’s cloud-native, real-time core; mortgage sales and origination are planned for a later stage.
Why West Brom is changing its technology
The stated reason is customer choice, not branch replacement. West Brom chief operating officer Martin Boyle said customers increasingly want “the convenience and choice of digital technologies to engage with us, and an app in particular.” The society says it will continue serving customers in branches and by telephone while adding web and mobile options.
Chief executive Jonathan Westhoff described the approach as helping customers “in the way that suits them best.” That means the programme is intended to add channels rather than make digital service the only route to the society.
How the five-year programme is staged
Computer Weekly reported three 18-month transition states within the wider five-year plan. The published sequence is:
#1 Best Overall
| Transition state | Planned work | Customer scale or scope | What is publicly known |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Launch digital savings capability and begin the first migration | About 30,000 customers from an outsourced relationship | Planned first stage; no final adoption result has been published |
| 2 | Continue savings migration onto the new core | Approximately 400,000 remaining savings customers | Planned second stage; completion has not been reported |
| 3 | Deploy a mortgage sales and originations platform | Mortgage applicants and the wider mortgage operation | Later stage; the existing Unisys platform remains the mortgage core during transition |
The customer figures are the estimates reported in 2025 and may change as implementation proceeds. West Brom’s 2026 annual-general-meeting and financial updates describe continuing investment and progress, but do not say that the programme is complete or provide final app-adoption, service-speed or return-on-investment figures.
What customers should expect
A savings app and more digital choice
The first customer-facing objective is a digital savings service, including the app customers asked for. The public announcements do not give a confirmed launch date, app-store listing or a schedule for each account type. The safest interpretation is that availability will be phased rather than simultaneous for every saver.
Branches and telephone support remain
West Brom has said it will retain its 34 branches and continue telephone support. The digital programme therefore does not, on the evidence currently available, announce a branch-closure plan. It adds online and mobile access alongside the existing high-street and phone model.
Rank #2
Staged savings migration
Accounts are not being described as moving all at once. The plan starts with about 30,000 customers linked to an outsourced relationship, followed by roughly 400,000 other savings customers. The published material does not set out individual migration dates, account-by-account eligibility or any customer action required before a specific migration.
Mortgage technology comes later
The later mortgage phase is intended to modernise sales and origination—the process of taking an application through to a lending decision and completion. During the transition, the Unisys system remains the mortgage core, so a new savings app should not be taken as evidence that every West Brom mortgage process has already moved to the new platform.
What Deloitte and 10x Banking are doing
| Organisation | Role in the programme |
|---|---|
| West Brom Building Society | Sets the customer and mutual-business requirements, owns the service and is funding the multi-year change. |
| Deloitte | Lead service integrator. Its Converge digital front-end framework is being used to help provide customer-facing services and connect them to the underlying banking systems. |
| 10x Banking | Provides the cloud-native, real-time core ledger to which savings balances and accounts are being migrated. |
| Six Degrees | A separate vendor case study describes AWS integration and managed SD-WAN across branches as part of technology-estate modernisation. That account is vendor-reported context, not proof that the entire five-year programme is finished. |
What changes technically
From batch processing to a real-time ledger
The legacy Unisys Financial Services System relies heavily on batch-style processing. West Brom’s target is a 10x ledger designed to record and expose account activity in real time, reducing the need to wait for large scheduled processing runs. Real-time processing can support quicker balance and transaction updates, but the announcements describe an intended architecture, not a published performance guarantee for customers.

- 5-PACK/50 Sets (250 Total Sets): Ten 5.5" X 8"5 Sales Order Books with two-part white & yellow forms which produce two identical records of each sales transaction, one for the customer and one for your business.
- CARBONLESS COPY: No carbon paper! Each 2-part set features a white top sheet for recording each transaction and a bottom canary yellow sheet that captures written text from top sheet.
- CONSECUTIVE NUMBERS: Individual invoice books have all consecutive numbers in the upper right corner for your convenience.
- WRAP-AROUND COVER: Fold the back cover between sets to keep invoices neat and legible.
- PERSONALIZE: Each sales order form sheet contains space at the top to add a company stamp or sticker.
APIs for additional services
API gateways are planned so that other digital services can connect to the core more consistently. In practical terms, this gives West Brom a way to add or change customer journeys without rebuilding every function inside one legacy system. The programme materials do not promise a particular number of APIs or a specific future feature set.
Cloud-native does not mean every system moves immediately
The 10x savings core is cloud-native, while the Unisys mortgage platform stays in place during the transition. West Brom is therefore operating a mixed estate for part of the programme. The AWS and branch-network work described by Six Degrees supports that broader modernisation, but it should not be confused with completion of the savings or mortgage migrations.

Timing and progress: what is—and is not—confirmed
The programme was announced in May 2025 and is described as a five-year effort with three 18-month transition states. There is no confirmed public date for the savings-app launch in the material available for this article. West Brom’s 2026 AGM update records £1.1 billion in new homeownership lending and £5.6 billion in total savings balances, but those are business figures, not evidence that the digital project has reached a particular adoption or efficiency target.
Rank #4
As of the 2026 updates, West Brom reports ongoing work rather than a finished transformation. No final figures have been published for the number of app users, migration completion, faster service times, cost savings or return on investment.

- More channel choice: customers should eventually be able to use digital savings services while retaining branch and telephone options.
- Phased availability: the first app and savings migration cover a defined group before the larger remaining-savings migration.
- Separate mortgage timetable: mortgage sales and origination are a later phase, so savings and mortgage technology will coexist during the transition.
- Change without a published universal date: West Brom has not provided one launch day or a complete account-by-account migration calendar.
- Benefits are objectives, not measured outcomes yet: real-time processing and API connectivity are intended to improve flexibility, but public adoption and performance results are still outstanding.
Key questions still open
When will the West Brom savings app launch?
A confirmed public launch date is not stated. The app belongs to the first 18-month transition state, which also includes the initial migration of about 30,000 customers.
Is West Brom moving to 10x Banking?
Yes, for the savings core described in the programme: savings are being migrated from Unisys to 10x Banking’s cloud-native, real-time ledger. The mortgage core remains on Unisys during the transition.

How many customers are being migrated?
The reported plan names about 30,000 customers in the first group and approximately 400,000 remaining savings customers in the next stage. These are planned migration populations, not a published count of completed migrations.
What will happen next?
West Brom’s stated sequence is to establish the digital savings service, migrate the initial and then wider savings populations, and later introduce the mortgage sales and originations platform. The 2026 updates indicate that this sequence remains in progress.
