Short answer: the “AI analyzed one million reviews” project did not prove a best iPhone for 2026. Published September 27, 2024, it found the iPhone 14 Plus was the highest-ranked iPhone in its main 2022–2024 comparison, while Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Plus ranked first overall. The dataset excluded the iPhone 16 because it was too new, and it contains none of Apple’s subsequently listed iPhone 17 models or iPhone Air. Treat the result as a historical customer-sentiment snapshot—not a current buying verdict.
Apple’s current comparison page lists the iPhone 17, iPhone 17e, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 16-series models: Apple’s iPhone comparison. A 2026 recommendation therefore has to start with your priorities, budget and ownership plans.
What the million-review project actually found
The report from BGR describes a data scientist and collaborator scraping more than 1.1 million online smartphone reviews. The reviews were gathered through Google Reviews, which aggregated retailer and carrier material from sources including Amazon, eBay, Verizon and AT&T.
The headline number describes the initial collection, not the number of reviews that directly determined every score. Reviews shorter than 20 words were removed, along with material containing emoticons or irrelevant characters, template-like text, no evidence of actual device use, delivery complaints and complaints about a reseller rather than the phone. Approximately 30% of the initial material reportedly survived those filters.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
GPT-4o mini classified positive and negative comments in five categories:
- value;
- performance;
- design;
- battery life;
- camera.
A single review could contribute both positive and negative signals—for example, praising a camera while criticizing value. The final result aggregated sentiment across those categories.
The reported ranking
| Reported result | What it means |
|---|---|
| Galaxy S24 Plus | First overall in the main 2022–2024 comparison |
| iPhone 14 Plus | Highest-ranked iPhone in that comparison |
| Galaxy Z Flip 6 | Third overall |
| iPhone 14 Pro Max | The only iPhone Pro model in the reported top grouping |
| iPhone 13 Pro Max | Entered fifth when 2021 models were added |
| iPhone 15 Pro | Appeared near the bottom of the reported ranking |
Adding still older phones reportedly moved some iPhone 12 Pro models ahead of the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The researcher also claimed that iPhone SE models often outperformed more expensive iPhones in satisfaction, but the report’s displayed table did not allow that claim to be independently checked.
Is “AI analyzed one million reviews” a fair claim?
It is fair only in the narrow sense that more than 1.1 million reviews were reportedly scraped and processed in the project. It is misleading if it suggests that one million equally informative, verified owner opinions were retained and scored.

- More than 1.1 million reviews were initially collected.
- Short, templated, irrelevant and non-ownership material was filtered out.
- About 30% reportedly remained.
- Only comments containing usable evidence for a category could affect that category’s result.
- Positive and negative category signals were aggregated into model scores.
The published account does not provide exact retained-review counts for each model or category, so readers cannot tell whether every phone had a comparable evidence base.
What “best” means in this analysis
The project used an unweighted combination of value, performance, design, battery and camera sentiment. That is one definition of “best,” not a universal one. A buyer who prioritizes optical zoom may reject the model with the highest value sentiment; someone seeking a compact phone may dislike a Plus-sized device; a gamer may care more about sustained performance than design.
It also measures language in consumer reviews, not laboratory performance. Satisfaction is shaped by the price paid, expectations, launch timing, software maturity, storage configuration, regional deals, carrier experience and individual defects. A cheaper phone can receive enthusiastic “worth it” comments while a technically superior premium phone receives criticism because buyers expected more.
Why the iPhone 14 Plus may have scored so well
The data does not prove a single cause, but several plausible explanations fit the result:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Rank #3
- 6.1inch Super Retina XDR display. Aluminum with color-infused glass back. Ring/Silent switch
- Dynamic Island. A magical way to interact with iPhone. A16 Bionic chip with 5-core GPU
- Advanced dual-camera system. 48MP Main | Ultra Wide. Super-high-resolution photos (24MP and 48MP). Next-generation portraits with Focus and Depth Control. 4X optical zoom range
- Emergency SOS via satellite. Crash Detection. Roadside Assistance via satellite
- Up to 26 hours video playback. USB C, Supports USB 2. Face ID
- It offered a large display and long battery life without Pro Max pricing.
- Its lower relative price may have produced stronger value sentiment.
- Pro buyers may have had higher expectations for cameras, materials and features.
- The scoring system included value in the overall result, which can favor a less expensive model.
- Different models attract different users and use cases.
That is useful buying context: many people may prefer paying for screen size and endurance rather than for Pro camera hardware they will rarely use. It is not evidence that the 14 Plus has the best camera, fastest performance or longest support.
Where the methodology is too weak for a definitive ranking
Unknown sampling and weighting
The report does not establish the exact review count per model, geographic or language mix, retailer distribution, verified-purchase rate, duplicate or syndicated-review rate, or whether review volume was normalized by units sold. A model with far more buyers could disproportionately influence an unnormalized comparison.
Retailer and ownership bias
Carrier subsidies, regional pricing, return policies and warranty experiences affect value language. Removing delivery and reseller-fault complaints makes the score more device-focused, but it also removes part of the ownership experience a buyer actually encounters.
AI classification errors
GPT-4o mini can misread sarcasm, mixed opinions, comparisons with another phone, accessory complaints, carrier-service problems and replacement-unit experiences. “Battery” may refer to a charger, and “fast” may describe setup rather than performance. The published report does not supply the complete prompts, taxonomy, code, human-validation results or confidence intervals needed to reproduce the classifications.

- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
- Product may come in generic Box.
Launch-age bias
Older phones have had longer to accumulate reviews, receive bug fixes and become discounted. New phones may be judged before long-term battery or reliability issues appear. Review sentiment therefore mixes product quality with time on the market.
Why the 2024 answer no longer settles the 2026 question
The report was published on September 27, 2024 and primarily covered phones released from 2022 through 2024. The iPhone 16 was too new to appear meaningfully in the dataset. Apple’s comparison page now lists the iPhone 17 family and iPhone Air as well as iPhone 16-series models: https://www.apple.com/iphone/compare/. None of those newer models can be ranked by the old project.
Prices, discounts, refurbished availability, software versions and buyer expectations have also changed. Carrying the iPhone 14 Plus result forward as “the best iPhone” would turn a dated observation into an unsupported current claim.

1. Decide whether Apple Intelligence matters
Apple lists Apple Intelligence compatibility for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16-series models and the listed iPhone 17 models on its Apple Intelligence page. Apple’s support documentation says supported software and hardware, at least 7 GB of device storage, matching device and Siri languages, and regional availability requirements apply: Apple Support requirements.
Compatibility does not mean every advertised feature is available everywhere. Apple says some more personal Siri capabilities remain in development, and language and region restrictions apply, including limitations involving mainland China. Check the support page for your exact device, language and location before paying a premium for AI.
2. Match the phone to the job
| Buyer priority | What to prioritize | Likely fit |
|---|---|---|
| Best value | Non-Pro hardware, sufficient storage, battery life and a meaningful previous-generation discount | Current standard or discounted prior-generation iPhone |
| Large screen and battery | Display area and endurance over Pro camera features | Plus-sized model when its current price is reasonable |
| Camera and video | Telephoto reach, ultrawide quality, stabilization, portrait tools and storage | Pro or Pro Max only if those capabilities justify the premium |
| Apple Intelligence | Supported model, software, language, storage and region | Compatible iPhone 15 Pro or newer listed model |
| Small phone | Physical dimensions and one-handed comfort, not just screen resolution | Verify current dimensions; Apple’s prominent new lineup is centered on larger sizes |
| Refurbished purchase | Battery health, return window, parts support and update eligibility | Older iPhone only when the discount compensates for missing features |
3. Check ownership cost, not just sticker price
Compare unlocked and carrier pricing for the same storage capacity. Show the total financing cost, not merely the monthly payment. Apple’s purchase page, https://www.apple.com/shop/buy-iphone, is the reference for current configurations, trade-in quotes and financing; values depend on model, condition and inspection and are not unconditional discounts.
Include AppleCare+, accessories, repairs, battery replacement and expected trade-in value. Apple promotes upgrade and trade-in routes, but an upgrade plan is most suitable for someone who values regular upgrades and predictable payments; buyers who keep a phone for many years may prefer outright ownership.

The defensible verdict
The million-review project found that the iPhone 14 Plus generated unusually positive sentiment for its price in a 2024 pool, while the Galaxy S24 Plus ranked first overall. That is an interesting clue about value and buyer expectations, not proof of a universal winner.
For a 2026 purchase, choose among Apple’s current models by deciding whether you need Apple Intelligence, Pro-level cameras, maximum screen and battery, compact handling or the lowest total cost. Without a new, transparent analysis covering the current lineup, no honest article can claim that the old review score identifies today’s best iPhone.
