Re:

RTX 4090 prices surged and stock dried up before the RTX 5090 launch

The RTX 4090’s December 2024 price surge was driven by scarce remaining inventory and marketplace markups—not a confirmed Nvidia price increase. Here is how it compared with the announced RTX 5090 and what buyers should do.

The December 2024 RTX 4090 price spike was real, but it was not an announced Nvidia MSRP increase. On December 8, 2024, major U.S. retailers showed little new stock while some remaining listings reached roughly $2,500 to $3,700, far above the card’s $1,599 U.S. launch MSRP. The evidence points to end-of-generation scarcity and seller markups as Nvidia prepared the RTX 5090, not a confirmed Nvidia price change.

What changed in the RTX 4090 market?

Nvidia launched the GeForce RTX 4090 in October 2022 at a U.S. MSRP of $1,599. By December 8, 2024, the remaining new-card listings observed by Wccftech were often dramatically higher. Those figures were individual retailer or marketplace offers, not a market-wide average and not a new official Nvidia price.

Retailer or marketplace Observed December 8, 2024 status Reported listing What it means
Newegg Listings from different sellers About $2,700 for one Asus TUF model; other listings around $3,599–$3,699 Asking prices, not Nvidia’s MSRP and not necessarily comparable stock
Amazon Listings available from marketplace sellers Starting near $2,500 Seller, warranty and fulfillment status had to be checked individually
B&H Photo Models marked discontinued Not stated Retailer inventory status, not an Nvidia end-of-life announcement
Best Buy Models marked sold out Not stated Retailer availability at the time of the report

These observations came from Wccftech’s December 8, 2024 report. Prices varied by partner-board model, seller, warranty, region, tax and whether a unit was genuinely ready to ship. A product page that remains indexed can show a price even when no retailer-held inventory exists.

Was there an official Nvidia price hike?

No official Nvidia RTX 4090 price increase was identified. The defensible description is that remaining retail and marketplace listings rose above MSRP. A retailer’s street price, a third-party marketplace offer, and a used or refurbished sale are different markets:

Reports that production had ended or been reduced in October or November 2024 should be treated as attributed supply-chain reporting, not as a confirmation from Nvidia. The available evidence establishes scarcity and inflated offers, but not an Nvidia decision to raise the official price or deliberately withhold cards.

Why an older flagship became more expensive

End-of-generation inventory was tightening

Older products normally become cheaper when a successor approaches because retailers want to clear shelves. That only works when substantial inventory remains. If production has slowed and retailers are down to a few units, normal discounting can reverse: each remaining listing becomes more visible and sellers can charge a premium.

Demand for the 24GB flagship remained strong

The RTX 4090’s 24GB of memory, mature drivers and CUDA, ray-tracing and creator support kept it attractive for high-end gaming, rendering, AI and workstation workloads. Buyers who needed that capability immediately competed for a shrinking supply pool.

Launch expectations encouraged speculation

As buyers anticipated a new flagship, some sellers priced the 4090 as a scarce product rather than as an aging one. That behavior explains why visible offers could exceed the original MSRP; it does not prove that Nvidia instructed sellers to raise prices.

What Nvidia announced for the RTX 5090

Nvidia announced the RTX 5090 on January 6, 2025, with planned availability from January 30, 2025. Nvidia gave it a U.S. starting price of $1,999, alongside the RTX 5080 at $999, RTX 5070 Ti at $749 and RTX 5070 at $549. The announcement is documented at Nvidia’s GeForce newsroom and Nvidia’s Blackwell announcement.

Model Announced U.S. starting price Announced timing
RTX 5090 $1,999 January 30, 2025
RTX 5080 $999 January 30, 2025
RTX 5070 Ti $749 February 2025
RTX 5070 $549 February 2025

The RTX 5090 uses Nvidia’s Blackwell architecture and has 32GB of GDDR7 memory; Nvidia’s architecture documentation lists 21,760 CUDA cores. See the official product page and architecture PDF. Nvidia advertised performance of up to twice that of the RTX 4090 when DLSS 4 and related technologies are included. That is not a promise that every game will render twice as fast in native rasterization.

Was the RTX 5090 effectively cheaper?

Against the reported December listings, yes: a $1,999 RTX 5090 starting price was below the roughly $2,500–$3,700 being requested for some remaining RTX 4090 cards. But the comparison has limits. The $1,999 figure was an MSRP, not a guarantee that every partner card would sell for that amount. Launch quantities could be limited, partner designs could carry premiums, and taxes and regional pricing differ. A lower announced price also did not guarantee easier access on launch day.

Should you buy an RTX 4090 at an inflated price?

Do not pay $2,500–$3,700 for a standard RTX 4090 solely because you fear it will disappear. At those levels, waiting for the RTX 5090 launch or choosing a protected used or refurbished purchase was generally more rational.

An RTX 4090 can still make sense when

  • You need 24GB of VRAM and established RTX 40-series software support immediately.
  • The card is priced near a defensible market value rather than a scarcity premium.
  • The seller is reputable and provides a meaningful manufacturer warranty or return period.
  • Your existing case, power supply and cooling can support the card safely.

Waiting for the RTX 5090 is stronger when

  • The 4090 listing is substantially above its $1,599 launch MSRP.
  • You want the newest architecture, longer product life, DLSS 4 or newer AI features.
  • You can tolerate launch-day shortages and partner-card markups.
  • You are building a complete new system and can budget for the required platform.

Look at a different card when

  • You mainly play at 1440p, where a flagship may be unnecessary.
  • You do not need Nvidia-specific CUDA, DLSS or ray-tracing capabilities.
  • Your budget cannot support a $1,500–$2,000-plus GPU.
  • A used RTX 4080, RTX 4080 Super or another suitable card offers better value.

How to buy a used or refurbished RTX 4090 safely

A used card can avoid a marketplace scarcity premium, but the warranty and return policy become central. Before paying, complete this checklist:

  1. Ask whether it was used for gaming, mining, rendering or sustained AI workloads.
  2. Confirm the remaining manufacturer warranty and whether it transfers to you.
  3. Obtain the serial number and verify that the seller offers a written return window.
  4. Inspect the 16-pin 12VHPWR connector and adapter for heat damage, looseness or discoloration.
  5. Request proof of operation under load, including temperatures and stability rather than an unsupported “artifact-free” claim.
  6. Prefer a seller with a verifiable history and avoid listings with no returns or unclear ownership.
  7. Budget for an ATX 3.x power supply, correct cable routing and adequate case airflow if your system lacks them.

What to check before comparing prices

  • Confirm whether the listing is new, open-box, refurbished or used.
  • Check who actually sells and fulfills the order.
  • Separate U.S. MSRP from taxes, shipping, currency conversion and regional pricing.
  • Compare the complete system cost, including power supply, cooling, case clearance and possible support upgrades.
  • Remember that Nvidia’s “up to 2x” claim depends on DLSS 4, frame generation, game support and test settings.

For current products and availability, use Nvidia’s GeForce buying page and official driver page rather than relying on December 2024 listings. Prices and stock are geography-dependent and volatile.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The late-2024 RTX 4090 spike reflected scarce remaining stock and inflated seller offers, not a confirmed Nvidia MSRP hike. Unless you had an immediate, specific need for its 24GB memory and could buy with strong warranty protection, paying $2,500 or more was difficult to justify against the announced $1,999 RTX 5090.
