Elon Musk Said He Felt “Lonely” and That Death “Would Come as a Relief” in a March 2022 Interview

Musk’s 2022 interview comments about loneliness and death are often compressed into a more alarming claim. The context was a discussion of longevity, happiness, social change and SpaceX.

Elon Musk made the remarks in March 2022 during a conversation with Mathias Döpfner, then CEO of Axel Springer, at Tesla’s factory in Fremont, California. He discussed loneliness, happiness, mortality and the risks of extending human life dramatically. The interview is not a current 2026 statement.

What Musk reportedly said

The interview contained two separate comments that are often compressed into one sensational headline. Musk said he sometimes felt lonely while working alone, particularly when staying in a small house during work on SpaceX’s Starship program without his dog. In a separate exchange about longevity, he said he was not afraid of dying and that death “would come as a relief,” according to contemporaneous reports from Business Insider and Geo News.

That does not support rewriting his words as “I am lonely and want to die.” The loneliness and death comments came in different parts of a longer discussion.

The death comment was part of a longevity debate

Döpfner asked Musk about whether people should pursue substantially longer lives. Musk argued that extremely long lifespans could preserve outdated ideas and slow generational change. In his view, societies need turnover, and political systems can become dominated by leaders whose age and experiences are far removed from those of the people they govern.

#1 Best Overall

Those are Musk’s opinions, not an established conclusion about aging or politics. The relevant point for interpreting the quote is that he was discussing mortality as a philosophical and social issue, rather than announcing an immediate wish to die.

What he said about loneliness and happiness

Musk’s example was practical and personal: long periods of working alone in a small house could feel isolating, especially when his dog was absent. Coverage by LADbible reported that he described himself as “medium happy” and said complete happiness involved being happy both at work and in love.

Those remarks describe moments and his own assessment. They do not establish depression, a clinical condition or a general rule that wealth cannot produce happiness.

He also said he wanted to keep living

The same interview coverage reported that Musk wanted to maintain his health and live long enough to see SpaceX’s vision become reality. That statement sits alongside his acceptance of death: not fearing death is different from seeking it, and the reports do not describe an imminent plan or threat of self-harm.

What can—and cannot—be concluded

  • Supported: Contemporaneous reports attribute comments about occasional loneliness, being “medium happy,” and death potentially coming as a relief to Musk’s March 2022 conversation with Döpfner.
  • Supported: The death remark followed a discussion of extended lifespans, generational turnover and social stagnation.
  • Not established: The reports do not show that Musk was suicidal, clinically depressed or experiencing an immediate crisis.
  • Not established: The interview does not prove that a relationship, breakup or another specific event caused the comments.

The original full interview transcript or video was not clearly available in the contemporaneous coverage used here. The safest wording is therefore that Musk’s comments were reported by those outlets, rather than presenting an independently verified official transcript.

Why the headline remains misleading when stripped of context

A headline pairing “lonely” with “death would come as a relief” can make the two remarks sound like a single declaration. The fuller account is narrower: Musk acknowledged occasional isolation, described himself as only moderately happy, and expressed a philosophical lack of fear about death while arguing against extremely prolonged human lifespans. He also said he hoped to remain healthy long enough to see SpaceX’s ambitions fulfilled.

Because the interview dates to March 2022, any post presenting the quote as breaking news or as evidence of a current safety concern is missing its date and context. A genuine present-day concern would require a current, direct statement—not an old interview excerpt.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Musk did make the reported comments in a March 2022 interview, but “lonely” and “death would come as a relief” were separate remarks in a broader discussion of happiness, longevity and social change. The available reports do not establish suicidal intent or a current mental-health crisis.
