The “still in talks” headline is outdated. Apple and Google discussed licensing Gemini for iPhone AI features in March 2024, but they announced a multiyear collaboration on January 12, 2026. Apple then previewed Siri AI at WWDC26 on June 8, describing next-generation Apple foundation models developed with Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology.
For iPhone owners, this is not a Google Gemini app takeover. Apple controls the Siri experience, operating-system integration and stated privacy architecture; Google supplies important model technology and cloud infrastructure behind Apple Intelligence.
What was originally reported in 2024?
In March 2024, Apple was reportedly negotiating with Google to use Gemini for cloud-based generative-AI capabilities on the iPhone. The discussions were described as a possible way to add features such as text and image generation while Apple continued building its own systems. Apple was also reported to have discussed AI cooperation with OpenAI. No completed Google agreement had been announced at that stage. Reuters/Yahoo’s March 2024 report covered those negotiations.
That distinction matters when reading an old article or social-media post: “in talks” accurately described the 2024 stage, not the companies’ position in August 2026.

What Apple and Google actually agreed to
The official language says the collaboration is multiyear. Apple’s next generation of foundation models will be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology. Those models are intended to support future Apple Intelligence capabilities, including a more personalized Siri.
This does not mean Apple is simply installing the consumer Gemini chatbot as the iPhone’s default assistant. The layers are different:

- Apple Intelligence: Apple integrates those models into its operating systems and features.
- Siri AI: Siri remains the Apple-branded interface users invoke and interact with.
The companies have not publicly specified every production model, commercial term or routing rule. A November 2025 report mentioned a possible 1.2-trillion-parameter model and a reported annual payment, but those details were not established in the official January announcement and should not be treated as confirmed deal terms.

Apple’s announced design combines on-device processing with server-side processing through Private Cloud Compute. The company says its next-generation models can run in that broader architecture; it has not said that every request runs locally, that every request goes to Google, or that the public Gemini app processes iPhone requests.
In practice, where a request runs can depend on the feature, model size, hardware, privacy requirements and network connection. Apple says Private Cloud Compute is designed so user data is not stored or accessible to Apple or outside parties when requests are processed there. That is Apple’s stated architecture and privacy commitment, not an independent finding.

What Siri AI is designed to do
At its June 8, 2026 preview, Apple said Siri AI would be able to:
- understand what is displayed on the screen;
- use personal context from messages, email, photos and other apps;
- answer broad, current questions using web information;
- take actions across apps;
- support more natural conversational exchanges; and
- offer a dedicated Siri app for revisiting conversations.
Apple said the experience is designed to work across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple Vision Pro. A preview is not the same as universal release: features can remain limited, change during testing or arrive at different times by language and region.

Release status and compatible iPhones
Developer testing began June 8, 2026. Apple said a user beta would follow later in the year, with broader Apple Intelligence capabilities expected in the fall software cycle. Check the release notes for the exact feature and language you want rather than assuming that every announced capability ships together.

Apple’s listed iPhone compatibility includes:
- iPhone 15 Pro;
- iPhone 15 Pro Max; and
- iPhone 16 models and later.
Compatibility also depends on operating-system version, supported language, geography and the particular feature. An iPhone that can install iOS 27 is not automatically eligible for every Siri AI function.
Regional limits you should know
Apple says Siri AI will not initially be available on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch in the European Union because of Digital Markets Act-related issues. Mac and Apple Vision Pro users in the EU can access Siri AI when their device is set to a supported language. Apple also says Siri AI and other new Apple Intelligence features will not be available in China while regulatory requirements are addressed. Language support is expected to expand over time, but availability will remain feature- and region-specific.

Why Apple would work with Google
Potential advantages for Apple
- Faster access to advanced large-model capabilities than building every component alone.
- Better conversational reasoning and web knowledge for Siri.
- Apple-controlled interfaces, system permissions and privacy controls around externally developed model technology.
- Lower execution risk after delays to the more capable Siri upgrade.
Potential advantages for Google
- Strategic distribution across the premium smartphone market.
- Validation for Gemini against OpenAI and Anthropic.
- A deeper relationship with Apple beyond Google Search distribution.
Trade-offs and unresolved questions
Risks for Apple
- Dependence on a direct rival for a core platform capability.
- Potential privacy, latency, reliability and cloud-cost concerns for sensitive requests.
- Less control over model behavior and future supplier terms.
- A perception that Apple Intelligence is “Google AI inside an iPhone.”
- Regulatory complications, especially in the EU and China.

- Whether Apple will eventually replace Gemini-derived technology with wholly internal models.
What this means for your spending decisions
You do not need a Google Gemini subscription to use Apple’s built-in Siri AI, and Apple has not said that an iCloud+ subscription is universally required. Apple indicates that some server-dependent Apple Intelligence features have daily limits and that most iCloud+ plans can provide increased access; the cited announcement does not provide a complete current price table.
If you are buying an iPhone for AI, verify the exact model and regional support on Apple’s current pages rather than assuming that a discounted older phone qualifies. Official information is available through Apple’s iPhone shop and its Apple Intelligence announcement.
A standalone Gemini subscription is relevant only if you want Google’s separate consumer app, higher limits or Google-ecosystem features. It is not established as a prerequisite for Siri AI. Alternatives such as ChatGPT and Claude remain separate assistant products, not evidence of another built-in iPhone partnership. The Bottom Line
The story has moved from negotiation to implementation. Apple and Google now have a confirmed multiyear Gemini collaboration, and Apple is using that relationship to develop next-generation Apple Intelligence models and Siri AI. The user-facing product remains Apple’s Siri and Apple Intelligence—not the Google Gemini app replacing Siri—and access still depends on hardware, software version, language and region.
