This is a discovery and setup shortcut—not a relaunch of Apple Pay Later. Apple discontinued its own loan product in 2024; the plans surfaced in Wallet are issued and serviced by participating banks, card issuers, or third-party providers.
What changed in Apple Wallet
Previously, many shoppers encountered installment financing only after tapping Apple Pay at checkout. The new Wallet path lets eligible users start earlier:
- Open Wallet on an iPhone.
- Tap the + button.
- Choose Pay Later Options.
- Select a listed provider and complete its account, identity, and eligibility steps.
Apple describes this path on its Wallet page. The exact providers and labels can vary by country, software version, card, merchant, purchase amount, and provider approval.

Apple Pay Later did not come back
Apple Pay Later launched in the U.S. on March 28, 2023, as Apple’s own no-interest, no-fee installment product for eligible purchases from $50 to $1,000. Apple discontinued it in 2024 and shifted toward connecting Apple Pay users with outside installment providers.
So the accurate description is “installment plans available through Apple Pay” or “third-party pay-later providers surfaced in Wallet,” not new Apple financing. See Apple’s original announcement at Apple Pay Later and reporting on the discontinuation from Axios.
How to use a pay-later option
Set up a provider in Wallet
- Open Wallet and tap +.
- Tap Pay Later Options.
- Choose an available provider.
- Follow the provider’s application or account-linking instructions.
- Read the offered APR, fees, down payment, schedule, total repayment, and credit disclosures before accepting.
Apple confirms the first three controls; the provider controls the application and approval process.

Online and in-app checkout
- Tap the merchant’s Apple Pay button.
- Choose Other Cards & Pay Later Options or Change Payment Method.
- Select an eligible installment option.
- Complete any provider check and select the offered plan.
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.
Apple’s support documentation says online and in-app installment purchases require a compatible iPhone or iPad running iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 or later: Apple Support.
In-store checkout
At a participating contactless terminal, choose the pay-later option after selecting the payment method, authenticate, and hold the iPhone near the reader. Apple’s current support requirements list an iPhone running iOS 26 or later for in-store installment purchases. Provider and merchant support are also required.
After approval
Depending on the provider, Wallet may add a payment or virtual card representing the approved plan and label installment purchases in transaction history. Apple Pay is the interface and payment rail; the provider is the creditor and handles billing, repayment, loan servicing, and financing disputes. A merchant’s return policy and the lender’s refund procedure can operate on different timelines.

Which providers might appear?
There is no universal catalog shown to every U.S. user. Apple documentation describes supported debit and credit cards from banks and installment providers. Publicly documented examples include Affirm, Klarna, and Afterpay, along with participating financial institutions. Their appearance depends on location, device, merchant, transaction, account, and approval.
Affirm has described Apple Pay support for online, in-app, and supported U.S. in-store purchases; its terms are explained at Affirm’s Apple Pay page. Apple’s broader provider announcement is at Apple Newsroom. Neither source means every user will receive the same offer.
Recommended Free Tools
“Pay later” does not automatically mean interest-free
Short four-payment products may be advertised at 0% when paid as agreed, but longer monthly plans can charge interest or require a down payment. Affirm says approved customers may receive biweekly or monthly plans, including some offers starting at 0% APR, with terms varying by customer and purchase. Klarna advertises Pay in 4, deferred payment, and longer financing; eligibility and costs vary by product and customer. Review Klarna’s terms rather than assuming every offer is identical.

Before accepting, compare:
- APR and all fees
- Total amount repaid, not just the displayed installment
- Any amount due immediately
- Weekly, biweekly, monthly, or deferred payment timing
- Late-payment, returned-payment, collection, and account-restriction consequences
- Whether the provider reports activity to credit bureaus
- How refunds, cancellations, and disputes affect the balance
- Whether expected card rewards or purchase protections still apply
Why an option may be missing
- Your country or region is unsupported.
- Your iPhone or iPad does not meet the relevant software requirement.
- Apple Pay is not fully configured, or no eligible card is present.
- The merchant, category, amount, or transaction type is excluded.
- The provider has not approved the account or this particular purchase.
- A provider supports online checkout but not in-store use for your device or transaction.
Adding a provider in Wallet does not guarantee approval, a particular loan amount, APR, down payment, or availability at every merchant.
How this differs from Apple Card Monthly Installments
| Feature | Apple Pay pay-later options | Apple Card Monthly Installments |
|---|---|---|
| Where usable | Participating merchants accepting Apple Pay | Eligible Apple purchases |
| Financing source | Participating bank, card issuer, or third-party provider | Apple Card program |
| Terms | Varies by provider, customer, and purchase | 0% APR for eligible products and terms, subject to approval |
| Scope | Depends on merchant and provider rules | Apple products eligible at checkout |
ACMI purchases appear with Apple Card activity in Wallet and eligible Apple purchases can earn 3% Daily Cash under Apple’s terms. Details are at Apple Card Monthly Installments and Apple’s current ACMI terms. ACMI does not turn an ordinary Apple Pay purchase into an Apple Card installment.

Apple announced Apple Upgrade in the U.S. in July 2026 as a Klarna-provided lease for eligible iPhone, Apple Watch, Mac, and iPad devices. Customers can generally upgrade, buy the device at lease end, or return it, subject to program terms. It is not the Wallet Pay Later Options shortcut and is not ordinary ownership financing. Apple’s announcement is at Apple Upgrade.

Should you use a Wallet pay-later plan?
Use the option only after checking the complete obligation against your budget:
- Can you pay the total without relying on an uncertain future paycheck?
- What is the exact total repayment and APR?
- What happens after one missed payment?
- Are you already carrying several installment plans?
- How will a return or warranty claim affect the loan?
- Would paying cash, using an existing card, Apple Card Monthly Installments, carrier financing, retailer financing, or saving first cost less?
The convenience is real: Wallet makes provider setup easier to find and can reduce checkout friction. That same friction reduction can encourage impulse purchases, so judge the offer by total cost, repayment risk, and your ability to absorb the payments—not by the size of the first monthly figure.
