Apple lost at least four AI researchers and senior Siri executive Stuart Bowers in January 2026, Bloomberg reported, as the company relied on Google technology while rebuilding its delayed voice assistant. The reported moves involved Meta, Google DeepMind and a new startup; they do not by themselves prove that Apple’s AI strategy has failed or that every person worked directly on Siri.
What happened on January 30, 2026?
Bloomberg reported that Apple had lost at least four additional AI researchers in recent weeks. The report, based on people familiar with the moves, had not been publicly confirmed by all of the individuals involved. The named researchers were Yinfei Yang, Haoxuan You, Bailin Wang and Zirui Wang. Apple also lost Stuart Bowers, described in reporting as one of its senior Siri executives.

Who left Apple and where did they go?
| Former Apple employee | Reported destination | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Yinfei Yang | Started a company | Reported by Bloomberg; the available reporting does not identify the company’s business. |
| Haoxuan You | Meta’s Superintelligence research organization | Reported by unnamed sources cited by Bloomberg. |
| Bailin Wang | Meta’s recommendations team | Reported by unnamed sources cited by Bloomberg. |
| Zirui Wang | Google DeepMind | Reported in coverage based on Bloomberg. |
| Stuart Bowers | Google DeepMind | 9to5Mac described him as a senior Siri executive and reported his move based on Bloomberg’s account. |
“At least four” is not a count of exactly four, and “in recent weeks” does not provide a narrower departure window than the January 30 publication date. The reports also do not establish that all four researchers worked on the same Apple project or that each worked on Siri.

Why Bowers’ move to Google matters
According to 9to5Mac, Bowers’ responsibilities had expanded during the previous year, he reported to Siri chief Mike Rockwell, and he had previously worked on Apple’s discontinued autonomous-car project. His reported move is unusually notable because Google DeepMind was simultaneously helping Apple develop core models for an upgraded Siri.
That is a talent-and-partnership tension, not proof that Bowers or Zirui Wang personally worked on the Gemini technology Apple was using. Nor does it show that confidential Apple research moved to Google. It does show why senior departures can matter beyond headcount: leaders carry project history, recruiting networks and knowledge of how research connects to product delivery.
The wider timeline of Apple’s AI turnover
- September 2, 2025: Bloomberg reported that Apple robotics researcher Jian Zhang joined Meta’s Robotics Studio and that three other researchers were leaving Apple’s in-house large-language-model team. See Bloomberg’s report.
- December 2025: Apple’s AI chief John Giannandrea stepped down from his senior role and was expected to remain as an adviser until spring 2026, according to 9to5Mac’s January account. This timing and the details of his transition were reported rather than documented here through an Apple corporate announcement.
- January 30, 2026: Bloomberg reported the four additional researcher departures and Bowers’ move to Google DeepMind.
- March 2026: Apple recruited Google veteran Lilian Rincon to lead AI product marketing and appointed former Microsoft and Google executive Amar Subramanya as vice president of AI, according to Axios.
- June–August 2026: The upgraded Siri became the practical test of whether Apple’s reorganization and its Google relationship could deliver. The January departures alone cannot establish the outcome of that test.
Why Meta and Google can attract Apple researchers
The reporting confirms destinations, not one universal reason for every resignation. Meta is assembling high-end AI and “superintelligence” teams, while Google offers large-scale foundation-model research, specialized infrastructure and DeepMind’s established research environment. Those settings may appeal to researchers seeking larger budgets, faster model iteration, ambitious projects or different compensation packages.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Those are plausible explanations, not findings about any named employee. Coverage in The Information has also described internal leadership and coordination difficulties at Apple; that subscription reporting should be treated as context rather than independent confirmation of each personnel move.
What Apple’s Google partnership actually means
Apple’s agreement with Google is best understood as a division of responsibilities. Apple controls the product experience, device integration, personal context, privacy architecture and branding. Google’s Gemini technology supplies a major part of the underlying model capability for the upgraded Siri and other Apple Intelligence work. The Associated Press described the arrangement as a way for Apple to use Google’s technology and customize features for Apple products.
That does not mean Google owns Siri or that Siri is simply Gemini. Apple continues to develop its own models and systems, but using an external foundation-model provider indicates that its internal technology was not sufficient for every near-term ambition. The trade-off is speed and capability versus greater dependence on a direct platform rival.

What the departures could mean for Apple
Execution risk
Replacing senior researchers can slow work and interrupt institutional knowledge, especially when departures cluster around Siri, foundation models or machine-learning infrastructure.
Recruiting and retention risk
High-profile exits to Meta and Google can make Apple look less attractive to prospective researchers unless its new hiring, compensation and reporting structure demonstrate a credible alternative.

Former Apple employees now contribute to rival research and products. That does not imply trade-secret transfer, but it gives competitors access to experienced people familiar with Apple’s methods and constraints.

Dependency and privacy risk
Relying on Google for core model capability complicates Apple’s claim to complete AI independence. Apple must explain what data is processed on-device, what may reach cloud systems and how partner technology fits its privacy commitments.
Timing and cost risk
Siri delays have already made Apple appear behind Google, Meta, OpenAI and Samsung in consumer AI. Tim Cook has also discussed the possibility that heavy use of advanced Siri could eventually involve an iCloud+ upgrade option, but Axios reported this as a possibility, not a finalized price or policy.

The number of departures alone is a weak test. A more useful assessment asks:

- Are leaders leaving, or mainly individual contributors?
- Are losses concentrated in Siri and foundation models, or spread across unrelated teams such as robotics and recommendations?
- Is Apple replacing people at a comparable rate and seniority?
- Are products delayed, degraded or increasingly dependent on partners?
- Are whole teams moving together, taking institutional knowledge with them?
- Is Apple changing compensation, reporting lines or research priorities to improve retention?
On the available evidence, Apple is managing a serious organizational and execution challenge. The evidence does not justify calling the company’s AI effort a collapse or declaring that it has lost the AI race.
What this means for users and investors
For users, the immediate question is whether Apple can deliver the promised Siri capabilities reliably and explain their privacy protections. The January personnel report does not establish another delay, a change to current iPhone compatibility or that the entire assistant will run on Google models. It also does not establish that an iCloud+ subscription will be required; that remains a reported possibility for intensive future use.
For investors and industry observers, the signal is strategic: Apple is trying to rebuild internal leadership while using outside technology to narrow a capability gap. The success of that approach will be judged by shipped features, latency, reliability, privacy disclosures, infrastructure costs and Apple’s ability to retain and recruit researchers—not by one month’s departure count.
Bottom line
Apple’s reported January 2026 departures deepen an existing talent and execution problem, particularly because a senior Siri executive and a researcher reportedly moved to Google DeepMind while Google was helping Apple build next-generation Siri models. Apple is responding with new leadership hires and a partnership designed to accelerate delivery. The moves make the strategy more urgent and politically difficult, but they do not, on their own, prove that the Siri rebuild will fail.
