Apple’s U.S. trade-in estimates for several iPhone models, including the iPhone 16 family, were reported higher on May 27, 2026. That does not establish a formal, nationwide Apple promotion with a published end date. Apple’s direct Trade In quote is dynamic and subject to inspection, while Apple’s much larger “up to $830–$1,100” figures generally refer to qualifying carrier offers paid as bill credits.
Check your exact model, storage, carrier status and condition at Apple’s live Trade In estimator before ordering. Treat the quote as time-sensitive, but do not assume every iPhone qualifies for the headline maximum.
What changed in Apple’s trade-in estimates?
A May 27, 2026 report documented higher Apple trade-in estimates for several devices, including models in the iPhone 16 lineup. The report is evidence of model-by-model value changes, not proof that Apple launched a universally advertised “boost” with one expiration date.
Apple’s own Trade In page does not clearly publish a universal end date for the reported increase. Estimates can be revised as resale conditions change, and different storage capacities or condition answers produce different quotes.

Current Apple direct values: check the live quote
Apple’s estimator is the authoritative source for your device. Recent page captures showed a broad iPhone range of roughly $35 to $685 or $695, depending on the model and page state. Those figures are not a promise for every phone and can change after you answer the condition questions.

Is Apple’s increase really limited-time?
Verified: Apple’s estimates change, and the May 2026 reporting documented increases for selected models. Apple’s terms also allow the quoted amount to be revised after inspection or if the device arrives late.
Not verified: Apple’s public Trade In page does not state one universal expiration date for the reported direct-program increase. “Limited-time” could instead describe a carrier, retailer, email offer, regional test or a temporary estimate observed by a news outlet.
Preserve a current quote by saving the confirmation, completing the purchase promptly and shipping within Apple’s stated window. Apple says an online trade-in device generally must arrive within 14 days of receiving the new device: Apple Trade In timing and process.

Apple Trade In versus carrier offers
The distinction matters because the largest headline number on Apple’s buying pages is usually not Apple’s ordinary device valuation.
| Feature | Apple Trade In | Carrier promotion at Apple |
|---|---|---|
| Who provides the value | Apple or its trade-in partner | The carrier, through Apple checkout |
| Typical benefit | Purchase credit or Apple Gift Card | Monthly bill credits or promotional device credits |
| Carrier plan required | No for ordinary Apple Trade In | Usually yes, with an eligible activation or upgrade |
| Headline maximum | Dynamic live estimate; recent captures showed up to about $685–$695 | Apple advertises up to $830–$1,100, subject to eligibility and terms |
| Main risk | Inspection lowers or changes the quote | Changing plans, paying off early or leaving can end future credits |
| Best fit | Flexibility, an unlocked purchase and simple credit | Customers willing to remain on the qualifying plan |
See Apple’s buying page and current carrier-offer terms for eligibility: https://www.apple.com/iphone/buy/, https://www.apple.com/shop/buy-iphone/carrier-offers and Apple’s carrier-offer terms. Carrier credits are generally spread over an installment period; they are not immediate cash back.

How Apple Trade In works
Online trade-in
- Open Apple Trade In and choose iPhone.
- Select the exact model, storage capacity and carrier information requested.
- Answer questions about power, display, buttons, damage and activation lock.
- Apply the estimate to an eligible Apple purchase or select an Apple Gift Card where offered.
- Back up the old iPhone, sign out of your Apple Account, erase all content and settings, and remove Find My when prompted.
- Follow Apple’s shipping instructions and send the device so it arrives within the stated deadline, generally 14 days after the new device is received.
- Review the inspection result and final credit.
In an Apple Store
- Bring the iPhone to an Apple Store for evaluation and have government-issued photo identification available where local law requires it.
- The store can apply eligible credit toward a new purchase.
- An online estimate is not guaranteed to match the in-store result; the phone must match the condition you described.
How to calculate the real upgrade cost
Apple direct purchase
New iPhone price − confirmed Apple trade-in credit = Apple purchase cost. Use the confirmed value, not the maximum marketing figure. A Gift Card is useful for a later Apple purchase but is less flexible than cash.

Carrier promotion
New iPhone price + taxes and fees + required plan cost − promotional credits actually received = effective cost. Include activation fees, any more expensive unlimited plan, the months needed to receive credits and the balance on your old financed phone.
Taxes may be calculated on the pre-credit or post-credit amount depending on the transaction and jurisdiction. Verify the checkout disclosure and carrier agreement.
Should you trade in now?
Trade in now when
- The live Apple quote is close to or higher than your expected private-sale proceeds after fees, shipping, fraud risk and your time.
- You already want a new iPhone and your current phone is in excellent condition.
- You prefer an unlocked phone and do not want carrier-plan conditions.
- You can ship promptly and complete the account-removal steps correctly.
Wait when
- You do not need a new phone yet.
- The increase is small compared with the cost and depreciation of buying a replacement.
- A new iPhone generation is near enough that launch offers could change.
- Your existing device is still financed or a private sale would clearly net more.
Choose a carrier deal when
- You already use the qualifying plan or its extra cost is negligible.
- You will stay with the carrier for the full credit period.
- The total credits exceed activation, plan and switching costs.
What can reduce or erase the quote?
- Condition mismatch: Cracked glass, damaged buttons, display or battery problems, liquid damage and undisclosed repairs can lower the value.
- Activation Lock: If Find My remains enabled, Apple may be unable to complete the trade-in.
- Late arrival: Missing the receipt window can invalidate the estimate.
- Financing: You may still owe the old carrier balance after handing over the phone, or the carrier may require payoff first.
- Wrong storage tier: Capacity affects value; verify it in Settings before requesting a quote.
- Severe damage: Apple may offer recycling rather than monetary credit.
- Online versus store inspection: The final in-person result can differ from an online estimate.
- Data and eSIM: Back up, erase the phone and remove eSIM information before handoff. Confirm it no longer appears as an active trusted device.

Alternatives to Apple’s direct program
Private sale
A private sale can produce more cash, especially for an unlocked, paid-off phone in strong condition. Compare current completed-sale prices with seller fees, shipping, fraud, returns and the work of securely transferring the device. Do not assume a private listing price equals a completed sale.
Best Buy trade-in
Best Buy’s Apple trade-in page advertises an extra 10% trade-in value, but the base quote and promotion can change. The credit is generally tied to Best Buy, so compare the final value rather than the percentage alone.
Apple Upgrade
Apple Upgrade is separate from ordinary Trade In. Apple announced the U.S. program on July 28, 2026, with 12- and 24-month lease options starting at $17.99 per month and eligible AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon service: Apple Upgrade announcement. Leasing suits frequent upgraders who accept lease terms; it is not ownership through a normal trade-in.
If Apple lowers the value after inspection
- Read the inspection reason and compare it with the condition answers you submitted.
- Check that the model, storage and serial information are correct.
- If the revised amount is unacceptable, follow Apple’s return or rejection instructions promptly; do not assume the original estimate remains available.
- For a carrier promotion, review whether the device has already entered an installment or credit cycle before canceling anything.
The practical safeguard is to photograph the phone, record its condition and back up all quote and shipment confirmations before sending it.
Bottom line
Apple’s iPhone trade-in estimates were recently higher for selected models, but the public evidence does not establish a universal expiration date or a nationwide “boost” campaign. Check the live quote for your exact storage and condition, distinguish Apple credit from carrier bill credits, and compare the effective cost with a private sale before upgrading.
