As of 18 August 2026, the S24 generation is two generations behind Samsung’s S26 family, and remaining new stock is uneven. Reported comparison prices range from about £470 for a new SIM-free Galaxy S24 and £279 for a refurbished one, while listings for the S24 Plus and S24 Ultra can be lower still when new and refurbished stock are mixed. Those figures are not like-for-like: storage, condition, seller, warranty, trade-in, delivery and stock status can change the real cost.
For most people, buy the standard S24 outright only when its price is clearly below a newer equivalent. Choose the Plus when its larger battery and display justify the premium, and choose the Ultra only if you will use its cameras, S Pen or larger screen. A contract wins only after its complete handset-and-airtime cost beats a SIM-free phone plus an equivalent SIM-only plan.

Which Galaxy S24 model fits your budget?
Galaxy S24: the compact-value choice
Buy the standard S24 when you want the smallest, lightest phone in the range, easier one-handed use and flagship performance at the lowest entry price. Its compromises are a smaller display and battery. If the 256GB version costs only slightly more than a 128GB listing, the extra storage is usually the more sensible long-term purchase; compare the actual capacities rather than the model name alone.
Galaxy S24 Plus: the screen-and-battery balance
The Plus adds a larger display and battery without the Ultra’s size, weight and price. It is the sensible middle option when the price gap over an S24 is modest. Reconsider it if its price approaches a refurbished Ultra or a newer-generation Plus, because the value case then depends on your preference for size and battery rather than a clear saving.
Galaxy S24 Ultra: buy for specific features
The Ultra is the right fit for its integrated S Pen, most capable S24 camera system, largest display and titanium-bodied design. It is heavier, less comfortable one-handed and normally the most expensive. A cheap refurbished Ultra is not automatically the best phone: inspect the screen, frame, cameras, battery policy and S Pen before paying.

What “SIM-free”, “unlocked” and “SIM-only” actually mean
- SIM-free: the handset is sold separately from a mobile contract. It may have a physical SIM slot, eSIM support or both, depending on the regional model.
- Unlocked: the phone is not restricted to one network. This does not prove that every UK 4G, 5G, VoLTE or Wi-Fi band works, or that the phone has UK warranty coverage.
- SIM-only: a separate airtime tariff with no handset financing.
- Contract: handset and airtime are bundled into one payment, often for 24, 30 or 36 months.
- Refurbished: previously used or returned stock restored for resale. Grades, battery standards and warranties vary by seller.
For imported stock, verify the exact model number, country, network bands, firmware region, Samsung Wallet availability, plug type, warranty provider and returns policy. “DS” is commonly used in user discussions for dual-SIM variants, but anecdotal reports are not proof that an imported model is identical to the UK version (example discussion).

SIM-free versus contract: calculate the total cost
Use the same model, storage, condition, data allowance, contract length, insurance assumptions and trade-in treatment in both calculations.
SIM-free route = handset price + (monthly SIM-only price × months) + delivery or setup costs − cashback − guaranteed trade-in credit.
Rank #3
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
Contract route = upfront payment + (monthly contract price × contract term) + any final payment − cashback − guaranteed trade-in credit.
One July 2026 comparison says a Galaxy S24 contract can undercut a roughly £470 handset combined with an approximately £8-per-month SIM-only plan over 30 months. That is an example tied to a particular tariff, not a universal result (MyMobiles). A contract may look cheaper because the network subsidises the phone, the term is longer, data is lower, or cashback and annual price rises are treated differently.

When buying outright usually works better
- You can pay upfront and want a rolling or short SIM-only plan.
- You may change network, move abroad or sell the phone before 24–36 months.
- The contract includes more data than you need or has a large final payment.
When a contract can be good value
- The total of every instalment and upfront fee is lower than the equivalent handset-plus-airtime calculation.
- You already want that network’s coverage, roaming and data allowance.
- The subsidy remains attractive after annual price increases, insurance and any exit charges.
How to compare new, open-box and refurbished S24 stock
| Stock type | Advantages | Checks before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| New UK stock | Unused battery, clearer manufacturer support and fewer cosmetic surprises | Seller of record, UK warranty, storage, VAT, delivery and live stock |
| Nearly new or open-box | Potentially close to new at a lower price | Exact condition definition, return window, battery statement and seal status |
| Refurbished | Often the largest saving and access to higher storage | Grade, battery-health promise, warranty, accessories, screen policy and seller identity |
| Imported | May be cheaper or offer a rare configuration | Model number, region, bands, firmware, plug, Samsung support and UK returns |
MoneySavingExpert warns that refurbished condition varies, original accessories may be missing, and many listings advertise a 12-month warranty and 30-day returns only subject to the individual seller’s terms (MoneySavingExpert).

- 6.8″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with a 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate and up to ~2600 nits peak brightness — delivering a bright, sharp screen with smooth scrolling and great outdoor visibility.
Refurbished inspection checklist
- Record the exact cosmetic grade and what marks are permitted.
- Look for a written battery-health minimum or replacement policy.
- Confirm warranty length, exclusions and whether it is seller-backed or Samsung-backed.
- Check the return period and who pays return postage.
- Confirm the phone is unlocked and a UK model if that matters to you.
- For an Ultra, confirm the S Pen, cameras and correct screen are included.
- Ask whether the original box, cable and charger plug are supplied.
- Read the dead-pixel, burn-in and water-resistance disclaimers. Do not assume a repaired phone retains its original water resistance.
Samsung direct, retailer and marketplace routes
Samsung UK
Samsung’s buying page supports or references SIM-free purchases, trade-in, finance, Samsung Care+, monthly tariffs and upgrade-related options. Availability, postcode delivery and promotional terms vary by configuration. The page says a trade-in value may not exceed the relevant upfront tariff or device cost in some flows, limits can apply to the number of trade-in devices, and charges may apply if a device is not sent. Treat every offer as conditional on its live terms. The box includes a data cable and ejection pin, but not a charger plug (Samsung UK).
Currys and other mainstream retailers
Currys offers SIM-free Samsung phones, finance, delivery and collection, but its live Samsung category is dominated by newer generations, so S24 availability may be intermittent (Currys). Comparison services such as Go.Compare, MoneySuperMarket’s S24 Plus page and Phones.co.uk help discover offers but are not necessarily the seller of record.
Amazon and marketplace listings
Amazon can show new, renewed, marketplace and imported phones on one results page (Amazon UK search). Open the listing’s “sold by” and “dispatched by” details, then verify model number, condition, warranty and returns. A major retailer’s page does not guarantee that the retailer itself supplied the handset.
Best Value
- 6.7″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X, QHD+ display with 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh and a peak brightness of ~2,600 nits — giving a noticeably sharper, brighter screen than the base S24.
Trade-in, cashback and the real net price
Separate guaranteed credits from conditional promotions and uncertain resale estimates:
Net handset cost = cash price − guaranteed trade-in credit − confirmed promotional bonus.
- Check whether the old phone must be fully paid off.
- Confirm whether the quote is provisional and can fall after inspection.
- Record when credit is paid and whether it is instant, delayed or issued as a voucher.
- Read claim deadlines and proof-of-purchase requirements for cashback.
- Check whether the bonus applies only to new, non-refurbished stock or a particular tariff.
Do not subtract a speculative private-sale price as though it were guaranteed. A trade-in can also reduce the apparent saving if it requires an expensive contract or if the assessed condition is lower than the online estimate.
When the S24 is still worth buying
Buy when the discount from a newer equivalent is material, the warranty and returns are clear, and the model meets your storage, camera and battery needs. Refurbished stock can make particular sense for the Ultra if the seller provides strong battery and display protections. Avoid when a new S24 costs only slightly less than a current-generation phone, when a contract requires an unusually long commitment, or when the cheapest listing is imported with uncertain support.
