The CIO100 Awards are an annual CIO and Foundry recognition of 100 organizations whose IT teams use technology to create measurable business value. The October 1, 2024 announcement was a historical call for nominations for that year’s U.S. cycle—not an open deadline today. The award can provide visibility and a useful executive case study, but it is recognition, not a certification or proof that a company outperforms every non-winner.
What the CIO100 Awards are
The U.S. CIO100 Awards recognize organizations and the IT teams behind technology-led improvements. CIO describes the program as selecting 100 organizations whose technology work delivers business value, improves processes, enables growth or strengthens customer relationships. The program spans industries such as financial services, manufacturing, healthcare and higher education. CIO’s 2026 call for entries provides the current U.S. description.

The October 1, 2024 item was published by CIO as a news and events promotion article encouraging organizations to apply. Its headline said nominations opened that day; that date applies only to the 2024 cycle.

As of 2026, the 2024 nomination window is closed. CIO’s later U.S. materials said the 2026 cycle accepted submissions through January 14, 2026, with an awards event scheduled for August 17–19, 2026. Check the CIO awards hub for whichever cycle is currently available rather than relying on the 2024 date.
Who and what the award recognizes

Which technology achievements can fit
CIO’s 2024 promotion cited data analytics, cybersecurity, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and digital transformation. Other relevant stories can involve process redesign, customer experience, enterprise modernization, technology-enabled growth or competitive differentiation.
Using a fashionable technology is not enough. The persuasive question is what changed for the business and how the organization can demonstrate that change. Examples include:

- Higher revenue, capacity or customer conversion
- Improved reliability, resilience or recovery performance
- Reduced security, compliance or operational risk
- Better customer satisfaction or service quality

Why CIO calls it more than a trophy
The 2024 article presents several potential benefits. They are promotional claims about what recognition can do, not independently measured outcomes guaranteed for every winner.

Peer recognition
Being selected places an organization among other technology leaders and can provide an external signal that its work produced meaningful results. That signal is different from an audit, certification or objective ranking; the source does not show that winners outperform non-winners financially or operationally.
Visibility and employer branding
CIO says recognition can increase visibility with industry peers, media, prospective customers and potential employees. It may also give existing staff a source of pride and support employer branding. The article supplies no data proving automatic increases in applications, retention, leads or sales.
Strategic reflection
Preparing a nomination forces a team to explain the original business problem, the technology response, adoption and results. Even without winning, that work can become an executive briefing, internal case study, transformation update or funding narrative.
Networking
CIO associates the event with opportunities to meet CIOs, technology vendors and thought leaders. Its later U.S. program material similarly describes finalists and winners sharing their stories and connecting with technology leaders. The value depends on who attends and how the organization follows up.
How to build a credible nomination
CIO says judging focuses on measurable results and how technology was applied to achieve business outcomes. A clear submission can follow this sequence:

- Define the business problem. State the constraint, risk, customer issue or strategic opportunity, including its baseline and why action was needed.
- Describe the response. Explain what the organization built, deployed, modernized, automated or redesigned.
- Show the organization’s contribution. Separate the team’s architecture, workflow, governance, operating model and change management from the features of a purchased product.
- Explain what was innovative. Identify the distinctive decision or combination of technology and process, rather than relying on words such as “revolutionary.”
- Document adoption and scale. Say whether the work was a pilot, regional rollout, enterprise deployment or customer-facing service, and how many users, sites or transactions it covered.
- Prove the outcome. Connect the intervention to revenue, cost, speed, resilience, security, customer, employee, quality or compliance results.
- Credit leadership and collaboration. Show how technology leaders worked with executives and business functions, and name the teams that delivered the change.
- Attach an evidence trail. Identify the baseline, comparison period, population, calculation method and business owner who can confirm the figures.
Regional CIO100 materials sometimes publish judging questions about operational change, distinctiveness, executive collaboration and organizational objectives. Those examples can help structure thinking, but they should not be treated as the exact U.S. 2024 rules. See the CIO ASEAN criteria only as regional context.
Metrics that make the story testable
A percentage without context is weak evidence. For each headline result, include:
- The baseline and post-change value
- The measurement period and date
- The population, geography or business unit covered
- The method used to calculate savings, revenue or productivity
- Whether the result is an estimate, a measured result or a one-time effect
- Confirmation from a finance, operations, security, product or business owner
For example, “processing time fell 40%” becomes more useful when it identifies the original cycle time, the post-launch period, the number of cases measured and whether the comparison controlled for volume or seasonality.
What the award does not prove
- It is not a security certification, regulatory approval or independent audit.
- It is not an objective ranking of financial performance or technology quality across all companies.
- Winning does not guarantee customers, recruits, investors, media coverage or sales.
- Recognition does not establish that a particular vendor or product is superior.
- An award cannot replace a business case, governance review, customer reference or product-market evidence.
Should an organization invest the effort?
An application is most defensible when the organization can answer “yes” to most of these questions:
- Did technology enable a significant change rather than routine maintenance?
- Are outcomes measurable and substantiated?
- Can the team explain its own contribution beyond naming a vendor?
- Did IT and business stakeholders collaborate meaningfully?
- Can a non-specialist executive understand the story?
- Can sensitive information be disclosed safely?
- Can the finished case study support board communications, recruiting, internal recognition, transformation reporting or future funding?
Confidentiality trade-offs
Security architecture, customer data, unannounced products, financial results, government requirements, vendor contracts and intellectual property may limit what can be published. Obtain legal, security, finance and communications approval; use an approved range or proxy only when it remains honest and reproducible.

Effort versus reusable value
Preparing a serious entry takes time from technology, communications, legal, finance and business stakeholders. The work has greater value when the same evidence can support executive decisions, employee communications, customer conversations or later award submissions.
Common weak approaches
Technology-first storytelling
“We implemented generative AI” describes an input, not an achievement. Explain the business problem, adoption and measured result.
Unsupported superlatives
Terms such as “best-in-class” or “industry-leading” need comparative evidence. A confident adjective cannot substitute for a baseline and method.
Percentages without denominators
Always provide the original value, timeframe, scope and calculation method.
Making the executive the sole hero
The U.S. program is described as recognizing organizations and IT teams. Credit the people and business partners who delivered the work.

Confusing implementation with innovation
Buying a commercial platform is not, by itself, an innovative outcome. Show the architecture, governance, workflow redesign, operating model or integration that created value.
Assuming business development is guaranteed
Visibility and networking may help, but the available material does not establish guaranteed leads, sales, investment or recruitment. Track those outcomes separately if the organization wants to assess return.
How to measure the recognition after the event
If an organization wins, define measures before promoting the result so attribution is not overstated:
- Qualified media mentions and executive speaking invitations
- Recruitment applications or hard-to-fill-role inquiries
- Employee-engagement or recognition indicators
- Customer and partner inquiries linked to the announcement
- Sales opportunities where the award is recorded as an influence
- Reuse of the case study in board, investor or transformation communications
- Internal adoption of the practice described in the submission
These are ways to evaluate impact, not outcomes established by CIO’s promotional article.

The trophy can add credibility, visibility, team pride and networking opportunities, but those benefits are conditional and promotional rather than guaranteed. The strongest reason to apply is often the discipline of documenting a clear, evidence-backed transformation. Treat “nominations open October 1, 2024” as a closed historical announcement, and use CIO’s current awards pages for any live cycle.
