Salesforce announced Agentforce 2dx on March 5, 2025. The update changed Agentforce from a mainly user-invoked conversational tool into a platform that can react to data changes, run approved actions in the background and present results through multiple interfaces. Salesforce said the full 2dx release would become generally available in April 2025, although individual capabilities followed a staggered schedule. Salesforce’s announcement describes the shift as proactive, autonomous and cross-functional.
That language needs a practical qualification. An Agentforce agent can act autonomously only inside the triggers, data permissions, tools, integrations, policies and escalation rules an organization configures. It does not receive unrestricted credentials to every ERP, finance, ticketing or production system. Cross-system work requires APIs, MuleSoft, Data Cloud, approved connectors, marketplace components or supported protocols such as MCP.
Salesforce now presents Agentforce 360 as the broader product direction. Agentforce 2dx remains important as the March 2025 milestone that introduced proactive, event-driven execution; it is not the complete name for Salesforce’s 2026 platform.
What Agentforce 2dx actually launched
Agentforce 2dx was a platform update rather than a wholly separate product. Earlier Agentforce experiences generally waited for a person to open a chat or submit a request. 2dx added the ability to start work when a business event occurs, then retrieve permitted context, choose an approved action and either complete the task or escalate it.
#1 Best Overall
| Earlier Agentforce experience | Agentforce 2dx direction |
|---|---|
| User opens a chat or asks a question | Data changes, rules, schedules or external events can trigger an agent |
| Primarily conversational | Conversation plus background workflow execution |
| Mostly Salesforce-centered | Connected Salesforce and external systems through governed integrations |
| Human initiates most work | Agent can recommend or execute defined tasks proactively |
| Build-and-demo emphasis | More tooling for testing, deployment, inspection and lifecycle operations |
How “autonomous” operation works in practice
Consider a delayed-order workflow. A status change in an order system creates an event. A configured Agentforce trigger invokes an agent, which retrieves the customer record, order history and approved policy. It then selects from permitted actions: update a case, call an order-status API, draft a message, send a low-risk notification or route the case to a human.
- A customer, order, case or employee record changes.
- A trigger invokes the relevant agent.
- The agent retrieves only the context its permissions allow.
- It reasons over the task and selects from an approved action set.
- It updates records, calls an integration, drafts or sends a response, or escalates.
- Logs, alerts and audit records allow administrators to inspect the outcome.
This is bounded autonomy, not unrestricted control. A payment, refund, access change or high-value contract action should normally require deterministic rules or human approval even if an agent can prepare the work.
The capabilities that mattered most
Proactive and event-triggered agents
2dx enabled agents to respond to data changes, business rules, workflow events, schedules and selected external events without a person first opening a chat. Salesforce’s launch materials establish the capability, but do not prove universal reliability, return on investment or production performance for every enterprise. The announcement should therefore be read as a product claim, not independent validation.
Actions, APIs and tools
Actions are the operational building blocks. Salesforce documentation describes mechanisms for agents to perform work, while APIs and SDKs support building, testing and using agents. Current developer documentation covers:

Cross-system connectivity
The launch connected Agentforce with MuleSoft, API Catalog, Data Cloud and AgentExchange components. MuleSoft and Data Cloud can help connect information held in numerous systems; Salesforce cited an Adecco example involving more than 40 data instances. These products do not eliminate data normalization, identity design or API maintenance.

By 2026, Salesforce documentation also described an MCP client for Agentforce. Organizations can register third-party MCP servers, govern their tools and expose approved server tools as agent actions. Salesforce said rollout began the week of May 18, 2026, with full availability planned by the end of May, subject to edition and org requirements. The MCP release note lists registration, allowlisting and gateway policies. MCP improves reach, but does not make an external system safe or automatically compatible.
Low-code and pro-code development
Salesforce announced Agent Builder assistance, Testing Center enhancements, an Agentforce API, Agentforce DX, DX Inspector, a free Agentforce Developer Edition and Interaction Explorer. AgentExchange was also introduced as a marketplace for ready-made agents, actions and templates.
Agentforce DX supports Salesforce CLI and VS Code workflows for creating, previewing and testing agents. Salesforce changed the documentation term “topics” to “subagents” in April 2026. The DX release notes describe the current tooling.

Salesforce said the March 2025 marketplace launch included more than 200 partners and hundreds of ready-made actions, with security review and customer reviews. By June 2026, Salesforce described AgentExchange as a broader marketplace combining AppExchange, Slack Marketplace and the Agentforce ecosystem, with more than 13,000 solutions and MCP connectivity to more than 6,000 AgentX apps. Those are Salesforce’s figures, not independently audited market totals. Salesforce’s marketplace documentation provides the company’s current description.
Where 2dx fits in the Agentforce timeline
| Milestone | Date or status |
|---|---|
| Agentforce announced | September 2024 |
| Agentforce generally available | October 29, 2024 |
| Agentforce 2.0 announced | December 17, 2024 |
| Agentforce 2dx announced | March 5, 2025 |
| AgentExchange announced | March 5, 2025 |
| Agentforce Developer Edition announced | March 5, 2025, as a free experimentation environment |
| Full 2dx release | Salesforce said April 2025; components arrived on different dates |
| Agentforce 360 | Announced in 2025 as the broader platform framing |
| Agentforce MCP rollout | Began the week of May 18, 2026; Salesforce planned full availability by the end of May 2026 |
Agentforce 2.0 and 2dx are related but distinct releases. Agentforce 2.0 was announced in December 2024; 2dx followed in March 2025. The original 2dx announcement also listed capabilities arriving in March and April rather than all being available on announcement day. Salesforce’s availability schedule is the appropriate reference for edition and release timing.

The technical stack behind an autonomous workflow
- Data layer: Salesforce records, Data Cloud, knowledge, documents and connected external data.
- Reasoning layer: The agent interprets an event or request and selects an approved action or sequence.
- Action layer: Flow, Apex, APIs, MuleSoft operations, prompts, external tools and MCP server tools.
- Experience layer: Salesforce interfaces, websites, service channels, Slack and employee experiences.
- Governance and operations: Permissions, policies, tests, logs, monitoring, escalation, auditability and cost controls.
The strategic change was less about claiming a fundamentally smarter model than about embedding model-driven decisions into enterprise execution paths.
A practical implementation path
1. Start with one measurable workflow
Suitable pilots include case classification and routing, order-status responses, internal knowledge lookup, sales follow-up preparation, record summarization, employee IT or HR requests, low-risk data updates and document intake. Avoid starting with “run customer operations autonomously.”
2. Map data and dependencies
- Source systems and system-of-record ownership
- Required fields and data freshness
- API availability and authentication
- Sensitive data and retention rules
- Failure, retry and rollback behavior
- Human approval points
Where native connectivity is unavailable, Salesforce points customers toward MuleSoft, integration partners or AgentExchange components. Salesforce’s integration guidance makes clear that integration work can be a separate project and cost.
3. Restrict the action set
For every action, define who can invoke it, which records it can access, whether it is read-only or write-capable, confirmation requirements, transaction limits, timeout and retry behavior, error handling and mandatory approval.
4. Build and test
Administrators can use Agent Builder. Developers can use Agentforce DX, Salesforce CLI and VS Code. Agent Script is useful when conditional logic, explicit tool use and predictable behavior matter. Test in a sandbox or Developer Edition with repeatable scenarios before production.
Rank #4
5. Monitor before expanding
Track completion rate, correct-action rate, unsupported-answer rate, escalation rate, error rate, latency, cost per task, unauthorized-action attempts, human overrides and the business outcome. Salesforce’s Spring ’26 material describes Agent Health Monitoring for error rate, latency and escalation alerts. See the release material.
6. Roll out in stages
- Read-only recommendations
- Draft outputs requiring approval
- Low-risk automated actions
- Limited production cohort
- Broader automation with hard limits
- Continuous review and rollback
Pricing and commercial reality
The following were listed on Salesforce’s pricing page as observed on August 16, 2026. They are listed prices, subject to change and enterprise negotiation; currency and eligibility depend on the contract and edition. Salesforce’s pricing page directs buyers to sales for detailed terms.
| Offering | Listed signal |
|---|---|
| Salesforce Foundations | $0 |
| Flex Credits | $500 per 100,000 credits |
| Conversations | $2 per conversation |
| Agentforce User License | $5 per user per month; requires Flex Credits |
| Agentforce add-ons | $125 per user per month |
| Agentforce Industries add-ons | $150 per user per month |
| Agentforce 1 Editions | From $550 per user per month |
| Help Agent resolutions | $2 per resolution in Salesforce’s comparison |
Salesforce says one standard Agentforce action consumes 20 Flex Credits, equivalent to $0.10 at the listed $500-per-100,000-credit rate. Voice actions consume 30 Flex Credits. The Salesforce pricing summary explains the credit model.
A single request can trigger several actions. Data Cloud, MuleSoft, Slack, storage, support, implementation, consulting and external API charges may be separate. Free Foundations or Developer Edition is not a free production deployment. Buyers should model total cost per completed workflow, including retries, escalations and integration work, rather than relying on a conversation or action headline price.

Autonomy can be overstated
Agents operate only within configured tools, permissions, triggers and business logic. “Across enterprise systems” means connected systems, not arbitrary applications with no integration effort.
Best Value
Bad data produces bad actions
Duplicate accounts, stale records, conflicting CRM and ERP ownership, incorrect identity or incomplete knowledge can lead to confident but incorrect work.
Multi-step workflows multiply failure points
Authentication, retrieval, classification, API execution, record updates and notifications each introduce failure surfaces. A correct answer does not prove that the business process completed correctly.
External tools expand the security boundary
MCP and other connectors create risks involving tool poisoning, excessive permissions, credential leakage, compromised servers and unexpected side effects. Registration, allowlists and gateway policies are necessary controls, not proof that risk has disappeared. Salesforce’s MCP documentation describes those controls.
Background failures can be silent
Event-driven agents may fail when nobody is watching a screen. Alerts, audit logs, bounded retries, human escalation and rollback are therefore more important than they are for a simple chatbot.

Availability varies
Features can differ by cloud, edition, region, release, pilot status, Data Cloud configuration, MuleSoft licensing and contract. Salesforce’s MCP note, for example, specifies Lightning Experience, Enterprise, Performance, Unlimited or Developer Editions and Foundations or Agentforce 1 requirements.
Who is the best fit?
- Salesforce-heavy enterprises: Usually the strongest fit when Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Data Cloud, Slack, Flow, Apex or MuleSoft already hold the data and identity model.
- Mixed-system enterprises: Can benefit, but should budget for API work, normalization, identity integration and monitoring.
- Organizations centered on another cloud: May get better economics and governance from a platform aligned with that ecosystem.
- Small companies without mature data operations: Should fix process ownership, data quality and permissions before attempting broad autonomy.
Alternatives to evaluate
| Platform | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Microsoft Copilot Studio | Microsoft 365, Teams, Power Platform and Azure environments |
| Google Vertex AI Agent Builder | Google Cloud, Gemini, BigQuery and Workspace estates |
| Amazon Bedrock Agents | AWS-native teams wanting model and orchestration flexibility |
| ServiceNow AI Agents | ITSM, employee service, customer service and ServiceNow workflows |
| UiPath Agentic Automation | RPA, desktop applications, legacy systems and process orchestration |
| Custom application stack | Teams needing portability and bespoke control over models, identity, orchestration and observability |
The useful selection question is not which vendor makes the boldest autonomy claim. It is which platform already owns the organization’s data, identity, workflow controls and integration surface.
Bottom line
Agentforce 2dx’s significance is the move from AI that waits for a prompt to AI embedded in business execution. The product can trigger work, call approved tools and cross system boundaries, but its value depends on data quality, integration design, least-privilege permissions, testing, monitoring and human control. Treat the March 2025 launch as the foundation of Salesforce’s later Agentforce 360 direction—not as a promise of unrestricted autonomous labor.
