Calm Premium is a subscription for people who want the complete guided-meditation, Sleep Stories, music, Masterclass and movement libraries. If you meditate occasionally, Free may be enough. If you use Sleep Stories several nights a week or want a structured daily program, Premium is more likely to justify its cost.
Calm Free vs. Premium at a glance
Calm’s free catalog is not just a locked showcase. You can use timed unguided meditations, one guided breathing exercise, the first session of selected multi-day programs, the Blue Gold Sleep Story, and a selection of background Scenes. Premium unlocks the standard Calm app’s wider catalog. Content without a padlock is available without Premium.
| Feature | Calm Free | Calm Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Timed, unguided meditation | Yes | Yes |
| Multi-day programs | First session of selected programs | Full available programs |
| Guided breathing | One exercise listed by Calm | Full available library |
| Daily Calm | No | Yes; a new 10-minute meditation each day |
| Sleep Stories | Limited selection, including Blue Gold | Full available catalog |
| Meditation library | Samples and free sessions | Full standard-app library |
| Music and Scenes | Selected free content | Full available library |
| Masterclasses | No | Yes |
| Calm Body movement programs | No or limited | Yes |
| Cross-device access | Account-based access on supported platforms | Premium access on supported iOS, Android and web platforms |
Calm’s descriptions and catalogs change. Its official pages have used different Sleep Story totals, so “a large catalog” is more reliable than a permanent count. Availability can also vary by country, language and location. See Calm’s feature comparison and free-content guide for the current listing.
What you can actually do with Calm Free
Use a meditation timer
In the Discover tab, look for meditation options and “Less Guidance.” These sessions are primarily unguided, making Free suitable if you already know how long you want to sit and do not need a narrated course.

Sample structured programs
Free users can try Day 1 of selected courses such as 7 Days of Focus or 21 Days of Calm. That lets you judge Calm’s teaching style, but it does not provide the complete sequence.
Try breathing and sleep audio
Calm lists one guided breathing exercise for free and includes Blue Gold, a Sleep Story. Free Scenes provide nature sounds and music-like backgrounds for relaxation, meditation or sleep.
Know what happens after a trial
Calm says someone who completes a seven-day trial and does not subscribe keeps the normal free catalog and may receive the full 7 Days of Calm series plus a broader Sleep Stories selection. Treat that as an account- or offer-dependent policy, not a guaranteed permanent benefit.

What Premium adds
A daily guided habit
Premium includes Daily Calm, described by Calm as a new 10-minute meditation each day, with themes such as gratitude, anxiety and focus. This is the clearest upgrade for someone trying to make guided meditation routine rather than occasional.
The complete guided meditation catalog
Premium opens programs and sessions covering stress and anxiety, sleep, focus, relationships, self-esteem, personal growth and beginner meditation. These are wellness resources, not treatment for a diagnosed mental-health condition.
A rotating Sleep Stories library
The paid catalog is valuable mainly because it gives regular bedtime listeners variety. Calm highlights narrators including Harry Styles, Matthew McConaughey, Idris Elba and Kate Winslet, alongside adult and children’s stories. If you replay one story occasionally, Free may suffice; if you want a different story most nights, Premium’s breadth matters more than any advertised count.
Rank #3
Music for sleep, focus and background listening
Premium includes the full available music library and playlists for sleep, relaxation and focus. Calm says new music is added weekly and promotes examples such as Disney and Lofi content; those examples are not an exhaustive catalog promise.
Masterclasses and Calm Body
Masterclasses are longer, expert-led educational programs rather than ordinary relaxation tracks. Calm Body adds gentle stretching and mindful-movement videos. Neither feature is a substitute for a comprehensive fitness or clinical-health service, but both broaden the app beyond audio meditation.

How much does Calm Premium cost?
Prices depend on country, currency, taxes, billing platform, account history and promotions. On the U.S. Calm plans page viewed for this comparison, the offer showed a seven-day trial followed by $69.99 billed annually, plus a Calm for Life option at $39.99 paid once. The U.S. App Store listing showed $14.99 monthly and $69.99 annually. These are observed U.S. offers, not a universal price list.
| Route | Observed or stated terms | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Website annual | Seven-day trial, then $69.99 per year on the U.S. plans page | Verify the checkout currency, tax and renewal amount |
| Website Calm for Life | $39.99 one-time on the page viewed | Availability and eligibility can change |
| U.S. App Store | $14.99 per month or $69.99 per year listed | App-store and website offers can differ |
| Family | Up to six members | Current regional terms and eligibility apply |
| Lifetime | Described by Calm as a way to obtain Premium | Price and availability vary by region, account, platform or promotion |
At the displayed U.S. App Store monthly price, twelve months would cost $179.88 before tax (12 × $14.99). That is a calculation, not a separate Calm price claim, and it makes the displayed annual plan far cheaper for someone who will use Premium for a full year. Check the pricing guidance and the current plans page immediately before paying.
Which plan fits your usage?
Stay with Free when
- You need a timer, occasional breathing exercise or background sound.
- You meditate irregularly and do not need a sequence of courses.
- You dislike recurring subscriptions.
- The free Sleep Story and Scenes meet your needs.
Try Premium monthly when
- You want to explore the complete catalog for a short period.
- You are deciding whether Sleep Stories or Daily Calm will become habits.
- You want to avoid committing to a full year while testing actual usage.
Choose annual Premium when
- You expect to use guided meditation or Sleep Stories regularly for several months.
- The displayed annual total is acceptable after checking your local checkout.
- You want music, Masterclasses and Calm Body in addition to meditation.
Consider Family or sponsored access when
- Several eligible household members will use Calm; the Family Plan covers up to six members under current terms.
- Your employer, insurer, bank or another partner provides Calm.
Calm lists employer Calm Business access and partner examples including Chase, AARP, Lincoln and Kaiser Permanente. Eligibility is not automatic. Check the benefit before buying an individual plan; holding two valid plans does not create extra content.

A trial is a subscription that converts unless you cancel under the applicable terms. Before starting one:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Confirm the renewal price, billing platform and renewal date on the checkout screen.
- Save the date in a calendar.
- Cancel through the same provider used to subscribe.
- Verify that the subscription status shows cancellation or an end date.
Deleting the app does not cancel billing. Apple’s terms require auto-renewal to be turned off at least 24 hours before the subscription period ends. For existing subscriptions, Calm lists these management paths:
- Apple: iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Calm.
- Google Play: Play Store → profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Calm.
- Website: Sign in at Calm.com/profile → Settings → Manage Subscription.
Labels can change with operating-system and account updates, so use the subscription provider’s current screen if your menu differs. Calm’s pricing update explains renewal checks and plan changes.
Do not confuse Calm Premium with Calm Sleep
Calm describes separate products: the standard Calm app, Calm Health and Calm Sleep. The standard app works on compatible Apple and Android devices and the web, but a standard Calm Premium subscription does not automatically unlock Calm Sleep. Calm says subscriptions cannot be transferred or restored between those two apps. Confirm which app appears on the checkout screen before assuming you are covered.
See Calm’s available-apps guide and subscription-separation explanation for the current distinctions.
When another app may be a better value
Calm’s strengths are polished guided programs, sleep-focused audio, a broad music and meditation catalog, and habit-oriented daily content. If those are not your priorities, compare the catalog model rather than assuming Premium is the default choice:
- Headspace emphasizes structured meditation, sleep and mindfulness courses.
- Insight Timer offers a large community-driven catalog and substantial free access.
- Medito is designed for readers prioritizing no-cost meditation.
- Plum Village App suits readers seeking mindfulness content associated with the Plum Village tradition.
These alternatives have different content, licensing and pricing models; compare their current offers directly rather than relying on Calm’s prices.
Quick Recap
Decision rule
- Need only a timer, breathing or occasional relaxation? Use Free.
- Want to sample the full library? Use the trial when offered, or choose one month and set a cancellation reminder.
- Use Calm routinely for sleep or daily meditation? Choose annual Premium if the current local price fits your budget.
- Several people will use it? Check the Family Plan.
- Have an employer or partner benefit? Redeem that before paying personally.
