Apple’s fiscal Q1 2025 results are now historical: the quarter ended December 28, 2024, and Apple reported on January 30, 2025, after the U.S. market close. Analysts had looked for modest overall growth, resilient Services, and evidence that holiday iPhone demand could offset weakness in Greater China. Apple delivered $124.3 billion of revenue and diluted earnings per share of $2.40, but the mix mattered: iPhone revenue slipped 1% and Greater China revenue fell 11%, while Services, Mac and iPad provided the strongest growth.
What Apple’s fiscal Q1 2025 covered
Apple’s fiscal first quarter was its December quarter, but it did not end on December 31. The period ended December 28, 2024. The earnings release and conference call took place Thursday, January 30, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. Pacific time (5:00 p.m. Eastern) after the U.S. market close. Because this was the holiday quarter, the result had to be judged against both unusually strong seasonal demand and the company’s product cycle. Apple’s filings note that the first fiscal quarter is historically stronger because of holiday sales and product introductions.
What analysts expected before the release
There was no single, stable Wall Street consensus. Forecasts were revised during January, so the date and provider matter.

The range reflected a debate over whether iPhone 16 holiday demand was merely stable or beginning to weaken. The prior-year December quarter generated $119.575 billion of revenue, so the broad expectation was for growth, but not a dramatic acceleration.
The key question was earnings quality rather than simply whether Apple could post a large number. Investors wanted to know whether revenue was coming from iPhone units, pricing and product mix, high-margin Services, or favorable currency and channel timing.
The central operating question: could iPhone demand offset China weakness?
iPhone was expected to remain Apple’s largest business and roughly flat to slightly down year over year. Analysts were particularly concerned about Greater China, where Apple faced competition from Huawei, Xiaomi and other domestic brands. A strong result in the United States, Europe, Japan and the rest of Asia-Pacific could have compensated for that weakness, but reported revenue alone would not prove that unit demand was rising.

Why units, price and mix mattered
- Revenue can remain steady if customers buy higher-priced models even while unit volume falls.
- Channel shipments to distributors and retailers can change the timing of reported sales.
- Foreign-exchange movements can make regional growth look stronger or weaker than underlying demand.
Apple ultimately reported iPhone revenue of $69.138 billion, down 1% from $69.702 billion a year earlier. Greater China revenue was $18.513 billion, down 11%; Apple said the decline was primarily attributable to lower iPhone sales. Greater China is Apple’s reported segment and includes mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, so it should not be treated as a mainland-only smartphone measure.

Services was the margin stabilizer
Services was expected to remain Apple’s most dependable growth engine. The category includes advertising, the App Store, cloud services, subscriptions and licensing. Its importance extends beyond its revenue share because its margin is substantially higher than that of Products.
Services revenue reached $26.340 billion, up 14% year over year. Apple attributed the increase primarily to advertising, the App Store and cloud services. Services gross margin was 75.0%, compared with 39.3% for Products, helping lift total gross margin to 46.9% from 45.9% in the year-earlier quarter. These figures come from Apple’s Q1 2025 Form 10-Q.

That mix means a Services beat can have a disproportionate effect on profit even when hardware growth is modest. It also supports the view of Apple’s installed base as a source of recurring revenue, although Services remains exposed to App Store regulation, litigation and other risks disclosed in Apple’s filings.
What Apple Intelligence could—and could not—prove
Apple Intelligence was a major investor theme, but one quarter could not cleanly isolate its financial effect from the normal iPhone product cycle, pricing, regional availability and replacement timing.

Evidence investors could reasonably seek
- Management comments linking upgrade demand to Apple Intelligence.
- Different sales trends in markets where features were available versus markets awaiting rollout.
- The timing of additional languages and countries.
- Progress on Siri, third-party model integration and the broader product roadmap.
A phased rollout could make Apple Intelligence strategically important without making it a measurable December-quarter revenue driver. A credible near-term signal would have been stronger upgrade commentary or better iPhone performance in supported markets; absent that evidence, AI remained a long-term demand and monetization thesis rather than an established cause of sales growth.

Mac, iPad, Wearables and Vision Pro
Recent launches of the MacBook Pro, Mac mini, iMac and iPad mini created a chance for categories outside iPhone to carry the quarter.

Apple said the Wearables category was weakened primarily by lower Wearables sales. Vision Pro was strategically notable but financially small: S&P Global cited third-party expectations of approximately 53,800 units and $279.7 million of quarterly revenue. Those were analyst estimates, not Apple guidance, and were unlikely to determine the consolidated result.

The December headline benefited from holiday seasonality, making Apple’s next-quarter outlook especially important. Investors would distinguish management’s formal comments from sell-side “guide-down” or “guide-up” estimates.

- How much would foreign exchange affect reported revenue?
- Was iPhone demand expected to improve or weaken sequentially?
- Was Greater China’s decline promotional and cyclical, competitive, or becoming structural?
- Could Services sustain its growth rate and support gross margin?
- How quickly would new Apple Intelligence markets and languages expand the upgrade opportunity?
- What were the expected gross-margin and operating-expense ranges?
- Did tariffs, supply-chain diversification or geopolitical conditions alter the risk outlook?
Apple’s risk disclosures specifically identify macroeconomic conditions, product transitions, supply-chain dependence, regulation and geopolitical developments as factors that can affect future results.

Apple described the revenue and diluted-EPS figures as all-time records. It also repurchased $23.3 billion of stock, paid $3.9 billion in dividends and dividend equivalents, and declared a quarterly dividend of $0.25 per share.
How to interpret the quarter
Headline result
At $124.3 billion of revenue and $2.40 of diluted EPS, Apple landed within the upper portion of the cited pre-release ranges and exceeded the $124.04 billion/$2.36 consensus cited by AppleInsider.
Quality of the result
The details were mixed. Services, Mac and iPad supplied strong growth and high-margin support, while iPhone revenue was slightly lower and Greater China declined sharply. The quarter therefore demonstrated resilience without resolving the core iPhone-growth problem.
Durability
The next test was whether the March-quarter outlook showed momentum beyond holiday demand. Currency, channel inventory, product mix and seasonal comparisons all needed to be considered before treating the result as a new growth trajectory.
Investor takeaway
Apple’s fiscal Q1 2025 showed why a headline beat-or-miss is insufficient. Services grew 14% with a 75.0% segment gross margin, Mac and iPad posted double-digit growth, and consolidated margins improved. At the same time, iPhone revenue fell 1% and Greater China revenue fell 11%, leaving the company’s most important hardware and geographic questions open. Apple Intelligence remained a potential catalyst, not a financially isolated result. The lasting verdict depended on whether management’s March-quarter outlook and subsequent execution could turn ecosystem strength into renewed iPhone growth.
