Samsung’s advertised $1,440 maximum was not a universal price cut. During the U.S. Galaxy Z Fold 6 pre-order campaign in July 2024, the figure combined up to $1,200 in trade-in credit with a reported $240 storage upgrade. The promotion has expired and is not a live offer in 2026.
The practical value depended on the phone you traded in, its condition, the storage configuration you selected, taxes and the final promotion terms. Samsung also promoted a possible $50 reservation benefit and a reported 12-month Samsung Care+ benefit, but those were separate from the core $1,440 calculation.
What made up the $1,440?
The contemporary deal report from Droid Life described the headline as a maximum promotional value, not cash handed to every buyer.
| Promotion component | Maximum stated value | What the buyer actually received |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible trade-in | Up to $1,200 | Credit applied after surrendering a qualifying phone |
| Storage upgrade | $240 claimed value | A higher-capacity Fold 6 configuration at no additional charge |
| Total headline value | $1,440 | Not a universal cash discount |
The trade-in amount represented the value Samsung assigned to an approved device. The storage amount represented the stated value of getting more storage, not a refund or cash payment. Someone without an eligible phone could not simply claim the full $1,440.

Who could receive the maximum trade-in?
The top amount required a qualifying U.S. trade-in submitted during the applicable reservation or pre-order window. Samsung also had to approve the device after inspection.
The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy S24 Ultra appeared likely to be among the strongest candidates for the reported $1,200 maximum, although the contemporary report did not establish a complete official eligibility table. Other models may have qualified for different amounts.
- The phone had to match the model and condition information entered during checkout.
- Damage, missing components, an activation lock or failure to return the device could reduce or cancel the credit.
- The promotion depended on the specific storage SKU and availability.
- The dollar values were tied to the U.S. launch promotion and should not be generalized to other countries.
What the Fold 6 could have cost
There was no single net price for every customer. The following examples show how the arithmetic worked and are not official checkout quotes.
Maximum-value illustration
A community calculation used a reported 512GB price of $2,040, then deducted $1,200 in trade-in credit, $240 in storage-upgrade value and a $50 reservation benefit. That produced a theoretical $550 before tax. The calculation was published in a Reddit discussion, not in an official Samsung price document.

The $550 result assumes all three benefits applied, the buyer received the full trade-in amount and the phone passed inspection. It also excludes sales tax, shipping, financing costs and the value of the phone given to Samsung.
A different list-price assumption
Another calculation in the same discussion started with an approximately $1,900 price and subtracted the $1,200 trade-in and $50 reservation benefit, arriving at about $650 before tax. The difference shows why the storage tier, list price and exact promotion terms matter.
No qualifying trade-in
A buyer with no approved trade-in would not receive the $1,200 credit. That customer could still receive any storage or reservation benefit for which they independently qualified, but the headline maximum would not apply.

How the storage upgrade worked
The promotion was reported as a double-storage offer, with the $240 figure attributed to the value of the upgraded configuration. The available report did not definitively establish whether every storage tier, color, carrier model and unlocked model qualified, or exactly which capacities were paired.
In practical terms, the upgrade reduced the price difference between configurations; it did not put $240 back on the buyer’s card. The selected SKU and the terms shown at checkout determined whether the upgrade was applied automatically.
What were the $50 reservation benefit and Care+ offer?
Reservation benefit
Samsung’s reservation messaging reportedly offered $50 for reserving the upcoming phone and providing contact information before pre-orders opened. The available coverage does not establish whether that amount was an instant discount, a Samsung.com credit issued after pre-ordering, or a credit with expiration dates and product exclusions. It should therefore be treated separately from the $1,440 headline.
Samsung Care+
The same report described a possible 12-month Samsung Care+ inclusion with a stated value of $156. It mentioned repair coverage, a reported $29 same-day cracked-screen service, theft-and-loss coverage and 24/7 support. Because the report used tentative language and Samsung’s deductibles and plan terms vary by device and date, those benefits should not be treated as guaranteed for every buyer. Historical details appear in the contemporary coverage; current Care+ terms are separate.
Costs and conditions that could change the result
Taxes
Sales tax may be calculated differently by state and retailer. Community discussion warned that some buyers could owe tax on the full device price rather than only the post-credit amount. That is jurisdiction-dependent, so the final checkout total—not the promotional headline—is the amount to compare.

Samsung could revise the credit if the returned phone differed from the submitted description, had damage, lacked required components, remained locked to an account or was not shipped by the deadline. Keep the trade-in receipt and follow the return instructions until the credit is confirmed.
Lost resale value
A $1,200 trade-in is not the same as receiving $1,200 while keeping the old phone. Compare Samsung’s credit with the realistic private-sale value after marketplace fees, shipping, fraud risk and the time required to find a buyer.

Financing
Monthly payments can lower the upfront charge but do not reduce the phone’s underlying price. Eligibility, promotional financing and any required trade-in approval affect the amount financed.
Regional terms
The reported dollar amounts were U.S.-focused. Trade-in values, taxes, storage options, warranty terms and consumer protections can differ substantially in the U.K., Europe and other markets.
When the promotion made sense
Strongest case
- You already owned a high-value eligible Fold or Galaxy S Ultra.
- You planned to upgrade during the launch window regardless of the promotion.
- You valued the larger storage configuration and any protection benefit.
- You confirmed the final price, tax and trade-in conditions before submitting the order.
Weakest case
- Your phone was low-value, damaged or unlikely to pass inspection.
- You would have to buy a phone solely to obtain the trade-in credit.
- You did not need the additional storage.
- You were outside the United States or comparing the Fold 6 with newer or discounted alternatives.
- You were satisfied with your current Fold and viewed the hardware change as incremental.
Community commenters characterized the upgrade as incremental for some Fold 5 owners and argued that the trade-in incentive was the main reason to switch. That is user opinion rather than an independent performance test.
Alternatives to the launch promotion
Keep your current Fold
Keeping a Fold 5 avoids surrendering a valuable device and preserves any remaining warranty or protection coverage. Compare the cost of upgrading now with the benefit of waiting for a later promotion and the trade-in value you might retain.
Buy a discounted previous-generation model
A discounted or refurbished Fold 5 may cost less without requiring you to trade in a current phone. Check software-support period, hinge and battery condition, warranty status and the seller’s return policy.
Consider another foldable
Products such as the OnePlus Open or Honor Magic V2 may be alternatives in markets where they are officially sold. Network compatibility, warranty support, software updates and local availability must be checked independently; community recommendations are not substitutes for current product testing.

Bottom line
The “$1,440 off” headline described the maximum combined value of up to $1,200 in trade-in credit and a reported $240 storage upgrade during a 2024 U.S. pre-order campaign. It was conditional, required giving up an eligible phone, and is now expired. Treat examples such as $550 before tax as theoretical calculations, not promised prices, and judge any similar promotion by the final checkout total and the value of the device you surrender.
