Short answer: Google and Back Market announced a physical ChromeOS Flex USB kit on April 2, 2026, at about $3 in the United States and €3 in Europe. The U.S. Back Market listing showed the kit at $10.99 before trade-in on August 18, 2026. ChromeOS Flex itself remains free, so the USB is a convenience purchase—not a required license or a new version of ChromeOS.
The financial question is whether paying for a preloaded installer makes sense for your particular computer. Check Google’s model-specific compatibility and support dates before buying, and make sure the laptop’s battery, storage, screen and other hardware are still worth keeping.
What Google and Back Market launched
This is a reusable, preloaded USB installer for ChromeOS Flex, Google’s operating system for compatible Windows PCs and Intel-based Macs. It is not a Chromebook, a new laptop or a paid edition of ChromeOS.
Google partnered with refurbished-electronics marketplace Back Market to lower the technical barrier to reviving older computers. The stated goal is to keep usable devices in service instead of replacing them immediately. Google’s announcement described a launch price of approximately $3 in the U.S. and €3 in Europe and said the package includes simplified installation guidance and Back Market video tutorials.

What ChromeOS Flex can—and cannot—replace
ChromeOS Flex is built around browser and cloud applications. It is a strong fit for email, Google Workspace, streaming, web banking and other routine productivity tasks. It can make a still-functional computer feel more manageable after an aging Windows installation becomes slow or unsupported.
Rank #2
- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory
- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
It is not a universal Windows or macOS replacement. Traditional Windows-only programs, advanced games, specialist peripherals and some professional creative applications may not work as expected. ChromeOS Flex also is not identical to the ChromeOS installed on an officially manufactured Chromebook: firmware behavior, hardware support, update eligibility and peripheral compatibility can differ.

Do you need to buy the USB?
No. Google distributes ChromeOS Flex free of charge and documents a do-it-yourself route using the Chromebook Recovery Utility. You supply a suitable USB drive and create the installer yourself.

Check your computer before spending money
Compatibility is model-specific. Google’s certified models list, updated August 13, 2026, labels devices as Certified, Minor issues expected, Major issues expected or Decertified. It also gives an end-of-support year for each listed model.
- Find the exact manufacturer and model number, not just a product family name.
- Prefer Certified devices. Treat minor-issue models as compromises and avoid major-issue or decertified models unless you are experimenting.
- Look at the support end year. A computer that boots today may have little update life remaining.
- Read model notes for missing features. Google’s list, for example, notes webcam problems on certain MacBook Air models.
- Check the physical machine: battery health, storage reliability, hinges, display, charger, cooling and Wi-Fi hardware.
- Confirm that the software you need is web-based. VPN, printing, management tools and offline applications may require separate checks.
How to install ChromeOS Flex
- Back up everything. Save local files to external or cloud storage, and retain browser passwords, license keys and recovery information. A full installation can erase Windows or macOS and the internal drive’s data.
- Keep recovery media. Do not discard the manufacturer’s recovery USB or recovery instructions until ChromeOS Flex has been tested successfully.
- Create or obtain the installer. Use Google’s Chromebook Recovery Utility with your own USB drive, or use the preloaded Back Market key.
- Boot from USB. Insert the drive, restart the computer and open its model-specific boot menu or firmware boot-order screen. There is no single universal key for every PC or Mac.
- Test before installing. If offered, run ChromeOS Flex from the USB first. Check Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio, keyboard, trackpad, webcam, display output, sleep and wake, and touch-screen behavior.
- Install only after testing. Follow the on-screen prompts, expect the internal drive to be erased, remove the USB when instructed and complete setup.
If something goes wrong
- If the computer starts its old operating system, restart and use the model-specific boot menu.
- If the USB is not recognized, try another port, recreate the installer or use another USB drive.
- If Wi-Fi, sound, webcam or sleep fails, review the model notes and test another operating system before committing.
- If installation is interrupted, do not assume Windows or macOS survived. Use manufacturer recovery media or a verified backup.
When the kit is financially sensible
It can be a good fit
- Your exact model is Certified and has several years of listed support remaining.
- The laptop is physically sound and your work is primarily browser-based.
- You would otherwise discard a usable computer or buy a replacement mainly because Windows support ended.
- You value a ready-made installer and simplified guidance enough to pay the current premium.
Choose another path when
- The model is unsupported, decertified or known to have major issues.
- The battery, storage, hinges, display or cooling system is failing.
- You depend on Windows-only software, demanding games, specialist devices or professional creative tools.
- The device has only a short ChromeOS Flex support window left.
- You already own a reliable USB drive and are comfortable following Google’s free installation process.
A refurbished replacement may cost more than a USB but can provide a healthier battery, newer hardware, warranty coverage and longer support. Back Market’s refurbished computer marketplace is one option to compare. A new Chromebook, listed through Google’s Chromebook category, offers integrated hardware support but defeats the immediate reuse goal.

The environmental claim, in context
Keeping a compatible, functioning computer in use can avoid the environmental cost of replacing it, but software cannot repair failing hardware or guarantee a lower total footprint in every case. Google says its pilot USB sticks are “waste-compensated,” with equivalent e-waste collected by Closing the Loop. Google also cites research claiming ChromeOS uses 19% less energy on average than comparable systems. That figure comes from the study Google cites; it is not an independent test of every laptop, workload or power profile.
Bottom line for buyers
The partnership is real, and the kit can make ChromeOS Flex less intimidating. However, the announced $3 price is historical: the U.S. listing showed $10.99 on August 18, 2026. Since ChromeOS Flex is free, a confident user with a USB drive should install it without buying the kit. For everyone else, the purchase is justified only after confirming model support, remaining update life and the laptop’s physical condition. If those checks fail, put the money toward repairs, a refurbished computer or a new Chromebook instead.
