Apple temporarily took its online storefront and Apple Store app offline on Friday, September 13, 2024, shortly before iPhone 16 pre-orders opened. The U.S. store displayed, “Almost ready for you. Pre-order begins at 5:00 a.m. PDT.” The timing and message were consistent with planned pre-order preparation, not evidence of a hack, crash, or wider Apple-services outage.
This is a historical explanation of that launch-day event. The prices and promotions below were U.S. figures from September 2024, not current 2026 offers.
What “Apple Store down” meant
The interruption affected Apple’s shopping storefront. Reports also showed the Apple Store app unavailable or displaying a temporary “Be right back” message. Available coverage does not establish that iCloud, Apple Pay, iMessage, Apple Music, or Apple’s corporate website were down at the same time.
Apple did not separately publish a statement calling the interruption scheduled maintenance. However, the pre-order-specific message, the shutdown immediately before the announced sales time, and Apple’s usual launch process strongly indicate deliberate storefront staging. It is more accurate to describe this as temporary pre-order unavailability than as an unexpected technical failure.

When iPhone 16 pre-orders opened
Apple announced a U.S. opening time of 5:00 a.m. Pacific daylight time on September 13, 2024. Converting that announced time gives:
| U.S. time zone | Opening time |
|---|---|
| Pacific | 5:00 a.m. PDT |
| Mountain | 6:00 a.m. MDT |
| Central | 7:00 a.m. CDT |
| Eastern | 8:00 a.m. EDT |
The Mountain, Central, and Eastern entries are time-zone conversions of Apple’s 5:00 a.m. PDT announcement, not separate Apple announcements. Local opening times varied internationally. Apple said the launch covered more than 58 countries and regions; market-specific inventory, taxes, financing, and delivery estimates differed.

How shoppers could improve their launch-day chances
Apple said customers could prepare their order until 9:00 p.m. PDT on September 12, 2024. A practical checklist was:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Choose the model, color, storage, and carrier before the store opens.
- Sign in to the Apple Account intended for checkout.
- Confirm billing, shipping, and carrier details.
- Save the shopping bag in advance.
- Arrange financing pre-approval if using a financing option.
- Decide between delivery and Apple Store pickup.
Using the app as well as the website provided a second Apple channel, but the sources do not establish that either was consistently faster or more reliable. If checkout became slow, repeatedly submitting the same order was risky: check order history and confirmation email first so a second attempt does not create a duplicate order or temporary payment authorization.

What to do if Apple remains unavailable
- Try the Apple Store app if the browser storefront is still showing a maintenance screen.
- Try Apple.com in a normal browser window, or test cellular data if the problem appears limited to home Wi-Fi.
- Check the official pre-order page for your carrier.
- Choose Apple Store pickup or carrier pickup where offered.
- Before retrying payment, look for an order number, confirmation message, or order-history entry.
Carrier ordering can be useful when a shopper wants an upgrade tied to an existing account. Carrier inventory and delivery estimates can differ from Apple’s, and a carrier’s lower monthly price may depend on an eligible plan, installment agreement, trade-in, and staying with that carrier until bill credits finish.
Apple direct versus a carrier
| Route | Potential advantages | Important trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Apple | Apple pickup and delivery, Apple financing, trade-in, and greater flexibility for an unlocked purchase | Popular configurations may receive later delivery estimates; carrier promotions may have a lower effective cost |
| Carrier | Account upgrades, installments, and promotional bill credits | Eligibility, plan, trade-in, and remaining-term requirements vary; inventory may differ |
Apple listed AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and, for the first time in that announcement, Boost Mobile among participating U.S. carrier options. Terms were not identical across carriers.

Apple advertised U.S. launch-period trade-in credit of $180 to $650 for eligible iPhone 12 or newer devices, subject to condition and eligibility. It also advertised up to $1,000 toward an iPhone 16 Pro through a carrier promotion. These were September 2024 figures and should not be treated as current offers.

For a direct purchase, Apple’s historical references were Apple carrier offers and Apple Trade In. Current terms, device values, plan requirements, and prices must be checked on the live pages. A carrier discount is not automatically cheaper: compare the full installment balance, required plan, trade-in value, and duration of bill credits.
Bottom line
The Apple Store going offline on September 13, 2024, was consistent with Apple preparing its storefront for the iPhone 16 pre-order launch at 5:00 a.m. PDT. The evidence does not show a broader Apple outage or a confirmed hack. The safest launch-day approach was to prepare the Apple order in advance, keep the Store app available as an alternative, and use a carrier site or pickup option if Apple’s storefront did not return promptly.
