The “LEGO Coin” promotion was a cryptocurrency scam, not an official LEGO product. An unauthorized banner appeared on LEGO.com on the evening of October 4, 2024, in the United States (October 5 in some time zones). LEGO removed it, restored the normal site and told reporters that no user accounts had been compromised. The incident still matters for shoppers and crypto users because a genuine brand domain can briefly display attacker-controlled content.
What happened on LEGO.com?
Visitors saw a banner using LEGO branding and images of golden coins. It claimed that a new “LEGO Coin” was available and promised “secret rewards,” with a “Buy now” button. The promotion was not authorized by the LEGO Group. Coverage from Engadget, BleepingComputer and Brick Fanatics reported LEGO’s confirmation that the banner was unauthorized.
The date can look inconsistent in screenshots and posts: the incident occurred during the evening of October 4 in U.S. Eastern Time, while LEGO referred to October 5. Those are the same event viewed across time zones.
Where did the purchase link go?
The button sent visitors away from LEGO.com to an external cryptocurrency marketplace. BleepingComputer identified the destination as Uniswap and reported that the token could be purchased with Ethereum. TechRadar described the destination as a phishing site, but the available reporting does not establish that it automatically drained wallets or installed malware.

The most accurate description is an unauthorized token promoted through a compromised website. A token existing on a blockchain does not prove that its name, branding or issuer is legitimate, and the genuine LEGO domain did not make the offer official.
How LEGO responded
LEGO removed the banner and its links and restored the ordinary shopping experience. The company said it had identified the cause and was implementing measures to prevent a recurrence. It did not publicly disclose whether the initial access involved a content-management system, a third-party service, stolen credentials, a deployment pipeline or another route.
A LEGO community moderator observed the unauthorized material from roughly 9:00 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. Eastern Time, an estimate of about 75 minutes reported by community monitoring. LEGO’s public statement said only that the banner appeared briefly and was quickly removed, so the 75-minute figure is not a company-confirmed duration.
Were LEGO accounts or payment details exposed?
LEGO told reporters that no user accounts had been compromised. That supports a narrow conclusion about accounts; it is not a public technical audit proving that no information was accessed anywhere in the company’s systems or that every visitor interaction was harmless.

There is no evidence in the available coverage that customer records or payment-card data were stolen. The incident is therefore best understood as a website-content compromise and brand-impersonation scam, not a confirmed customer-database breach. The lack of a disclosed intrusion path and forensic report leaves some technical questions unanswered.
Did people lose money?
BleepingComputer reported that only a small number of people appeared to buy the token, with losses reportedly totaling a few hundred dollars. That is a secondary estimate, not an audited total confirmed by LEGO or law enforcement. No evidence establishes that every person who clicked the banner lost funds.
What to do if you interacted with the promotion
If you only saw the banner
- No special account action is generally indicated merely from viewing it.
- Do not search for or buy the token through reposted links, social-media posts or cached pages.
- Treat any later “LEGO Coin” offer as fraudulent unless LEGO announces it through verified official channels.
If you clicked but did not connect a wallet
- Close the page without downloading software or entering credentials.
- Do not approve transactions or sign messages if the site prompts you.
- Remove suspicious browser notification permissions or other permissions you granted.
Available reporting does not show that merely viewing the banner compromised LEGO accounts.
If you connected a crypto wallet
- Revoke token approvals and site permissions associated with the transaction using a reputable wallet-management tool or blockchain explorer.
- If you believe you exposed a seed phrase or private key, move remaining assets to a new wallet. Never enter a seed phrase into a site claiming to verify, restore or unlock rewards.
- Save transaction hashes, wallet addresses, screenshots and timestamps.
- Report suspected theft promptly to your exchange or wallet provider, local law enforcement and the relevant financial-fraud reporting channel.
Revoking an approval can limit future transfers but generally cannot reverse a completed blockchain transaction. These precautions are general safety advice, not proof that this particular promotion used a wallet drainer.

If you entered a LEGO password
- Open LEGO’s official website by typing the domain yourself or using a trusted bookmark, then change the password.
- Change it anywhere else you reused it.
- Review account activity and email for unexpected login or password-reset notices.
- Be wary of follow-up messages offering refunds, rewards or “recovery” from the LEGO Coin incident.
LEGO said accounts were not compromised, but changing a reused password is a sensible precaution.
If you sent money or cryptocurrency
- Contact the sending exchange or payment provider immediately.
- Provide transaction IDs and recipient addresses.
- Do not pay an alleged recovery agent an upfront fee; recovery promises are a common follow-on scam.
- Assume recovery is uncertain because confirmed cryptocurrency transfers are usually difficult or impossible to reverse.
What this incident teaches about online payments
- A real domain is not proof that every page or banner is genuine. Attackers can alter content while the address bar still shows the correct brand.
- Unexpected cryptocurrency offers deserve extreme skepticism. A toy company suddenly offering secret token rewards is a major warning sign.
- Wallet approval is a financial authorization. Do not connect a wallet or sign a transaction merely to claim a surprise reward.
- A padlock only indicates an encrypted connection. It does not validate the person or offer behind the page.
- Blockchain existence is not brand authorization. Anyone can create a token using another company’s name.
What remains unknown
- The technical method used to place the banner on LEGO.com was not disclosed publicly.
- The exact number of buyers and the total loss have not been independently confirmed.
- LEGO did not publish a detailed forensic report or independently verified account of its new security controls.
- The public record does not establish that the external marketplace page itself was a malware site or wallet drainer.
Restoring the site quickly demonstrates incident response, but it does not by itself prove that every long-term security change is permanent or independently tested.

Bottom line for shoppers and crypto users
LEGO Coin was not an official LEGO launch. An unauthorized banner briefly used LEGO’s genuine website and branding to direct visitors to an external crypto marketplace. LEGO removed the content and said no user accounts had been compromised, while the available evidence does not establish customer-data theft or a wallet-draining attack. If you encountered the offer, avoid follow-up links, secure any reused password and treat any request to connect a wallet or pay a recovery fee as a scam.
